1,500 Words Known
This was one of the first goals I set out for myself when I started this journey. Things started clicking a little around 1,300 but nothing substantial by any means. I know vocab is just one part of the puzzle. I have noticed myself spotting words in pretty much every sentence I hear so that's currently what pushes me to continue!
I've shifted to more "time in" oriented goals, which is why my #weeklyupdate posts have time tracking for various metrics. It's very easy to get stuck on SRS as your main source of language learning, but that almost feels like the easy way out going forward. That's to say I don't think I would of gotten this far as fast with brute forcing my way here, but going forward I see a route that uses very little SRS and is instead filled with immersive input. That has a lot to do with my comfort in the language now. I don't think I'd be saying this at say, 700 words known.
If anyone is reading this, take anything I say with a grain of salt. I'm by no means an expert and am only sharing how I feel in this very moment.
Week 2・Japanese Immersion Log
In a lot of ways I stepped on the breaks this past week or so because my reviews are just out of hand. I want to focus on completing the Kanji deck provided by Migaku because it's so close to the finish line. Only doing 5 Sentence cards a day feels defeating but so many of my reviews come from the Kanji deck. Completing that first will eventually dwindle down daily reviews PLUS give me some satisfaction knowing I won't struggle when seeing that Kanji pop up later.
Content
Sentai Daishikkaku ⭐ ・1 Episode of Freeflow Takagi-san ⭐⭐ ・1 Episodes of Active immersion consisting of me reading as I go along, skipping over any dialogue that has too many unknown words. General YouTube Content ・Not much changing on this frong any time soon me thinks
Plan for Following Week
All that said, this week will likely be the same. Although I do have a study buddy who I'm going to try and pull into voice calls and watch content together. This will probably be mostly free flow with very easy content as they have little experience listening. Fingers crossed 🤞
Week 1・Japanese Immersion Log
This is my first post on Tumblr in a while, with more to come I hope! Let's start with the fact that "Week 1" is sort of a lie, but I haven't been consistent until recently with my immersion to even consider blogging about it. A lot of what I'll be writing is for myself to look back on so I don't continue to feel I'm making no progress. That's NOT to say I'll be getting deep in the weeds of documenting every little thing. Just a few tangible statistics w/ a sprinkle of commentary about how I'm feeling.

Sentai Daishikkaku ⭐ ・5 Episodes of Freeflow, I'm able to follow the plot well enough. Kind of a struggle in terms of making out words. Chojin Sentai Jetman ⭐ ・10 Episodes of Freeflow, another struggle but enjoying my time spent with it alongside a friend who's really into the series! Takagi-san ⭐⭐ ・2 Episodes of Active immersion consisting of me reading as I go along, skipping over any dialogue that has too many unknown words. This feels like a good use of my time and I plan on finishing General YouTube Content ・Low Attention pretty much across the board here. This is an area that could use improvement from me, I have a habit of turning something on just out of my level and listening to it while doing things around the house or at the gym. I know a better method would be to listen to content I've already seen, but at this time I don't have much content to go off of and rely heavily on Migaku's "Late Beginner" playlist.
Plan for Following Week
This next week I want to add more focus to reading w/ audio. There's quite a few shows on my MAL that appear to have a 60% comprehension score. I think those will be a good place to start considering I have access to the subtitles and Migaku. Additionally, 15 or so minutes a day of CIJapanese on Youtube sounds reasonable. Reevaluating how many NEW cards I'm studying in Migaku might also be the play. This past week has been a struggle, edging 150 reviews on the daily which takes valuable time away from immersion content. Especially now that I'm hitting 60% comprehension scores. For the longest my goal has been to achieve 1,500 words and I'm ALMOST THERE! This was a really nice goal to have, going forward I'd like to keep immersion at the forefront of importance. I have no intention of dropping SRS, rather I'd like to aim for 30 minutes of study and bulk immerse. At the present I spend about an hour a day on SRS...
