Past Conditional/Conditionnel Parfait - Si...clauses
*Used to express something that would have occurred.
*Mostly used in "Si..." clauses as so:
Conditional form of auxiliary verb in future = PQP + Past Participle
(avoir -> aur_/ étre -> ser_)
Aimer - avoir
Aurais aimé aurions aimé
Aurais aimé auriez aimé
Aurait aimé auraient aimé
Devenir - étre
serais devenu(e) serions devenu(e)s
serais devenu(e) seriez devenu(e)s
serait devenu(e) seraient devenu(e)s
i.e. If I had seen it, I would have bought it.
PQP Contidionnel
Si je l'avais vu, je l'aurais acheté.
i.e. She would have come, if we had invited her.
Conditionnel PQP
Elle serait venue si nous l'avions invité.
OTHER USES OF CONDITIONNEL (In non-Si..clauses)
x [person x] would have [done something] - expressing an action that did not occur but could have been done.
i.e. à ta place, j'aurait dit - If I were you, I would have told.
x To express an uncertain/unverified fact, especially news.
i.e. There was an accident in the subway.
Il y aurait eu un accident dans le métro.
Plus Que Parfait with "Si..." caluses
PQP is used in "Si..." clauses to express something hypothetical that is contrary to what actually happened.
*PQP applied to the verb that follows the part of the sentence with "si", not the part with the possible consequence.
i.e. She would have gone there if she had known
Elle y serait allée si elle avait su.
i.e. If you had asked me, I would have helped.
Si tu m'avais demandé, je t'aurais aidé.
Plus Que Parfait
* An action that had occurred before another action that is now over. The latter can be wither mentioned or implied.
Formation:
Imperfect of auxiliary verb (avoir/être) + Past participle of the verb
Aimer
j'avais aimé nous avions aimé
t'avais aimé vous aviez aimé
il/elle avait aimé avaient aimé
Devenir (with être - the endings are gender and number sensitive)
j'étais devenu(e) nous étions devenu(e)s
t'étais devenu(e) vous étiez devenu(e)(s)
il était devenu ils étaient devenus
elle était devenue elles étaient devenues
Ex. He hadn't eaten (before going to school)
Il n'avait pas mangé.
Ex. You went to Dan's house today; you already did the homework.
T'as allé(e) chez Dan aujourdhui; t'avais fait tes devoirs.
