Habitat For Humanity Reflection

Habitat For Humanity & Key Club Reflection 3/7/15 & 3/14/15

I was able to merge two activities that I really enjoy - Key Club and Habitat For Humanity. Along with the projects committee, I scheduled a visit to Habitat For Humanity for two days in the month of March in which we would volunteer to help build another house! When we went to Habitat For Humanity last time, every member raved about it! They loved getting dirty, meeting new people, and just doing something hands-on for the community...so I decided, we had to do it again!

I love Habitat For Humanity because I get to meet the people who we are helping, and often times, they are there helping build the houses themselves! It’s so nice to know that you’re giving back to the community - you don’t need money, you don’t need fame.. just a little time and you’ll be doing something so worthwhile. I love it. On the two particular days, we were able to help them put up the trusts on the home. I was so busy putting up trusts that I forgot that I was hosting my Key Club group..and most of them didn’t even notice because they were busy putting up trusts too and they loved it! I couldn’t believe how much we got done in those couple of days with 40 Key Club members. I think that the two days combined have to be one of the highest member participation for one event we’ve ever had. People loved it! I also got to talk with some old friends from Habitat who I always seen when we go to volunteer and I got to talk to the guys who work there and they always tell me that they miss me... which warms my heart because I know that I made an impression that was good..and that I’m making a difference pretty much. Helping out Habitat For Humanity gave me an insight on my own life, and how fortunate I am for the things I have - even if I believe that it is not many - that is more than most people in this world and for that, I am so grateful!

It’s actually pretty funny because Habitat For Humanity is like a therapy session in itself, whenever I’m feeling down - If I just go volunteer, it puts so much things in perspective for me in my own life. It’s interesting because giving actually promotes receiving in this situation and I’ll continue to go to Habitat For Humanity as many times as possible within my life because it really is an amazing organization and I want to be apart of that.

Key Club Reflection 1/10/15 - 2/8/15

Spring Zone Rally 10 AM to 2 PM

Key Club during the month of January (after winter break) till February 18th has been an absolute blast in which we spent most of the time readying for the district Spring Zone Rally.

The Spring Zone Rally is where each Key Club of the entire division 20A come together to hear speeches, attend workshops and elect our future district Key Club officers for the next year. During the period before Spring Zone Rally, I along with my projects committee spent time figuring out how we would present this event to the club - we made posters, powerpoints, emails, flyers and presentations in order to promote the event in our club. It was required that our members learn about some of the potential running candidates before they attended the Spring Zone Rally, so I spent time informing the members of the different candidates who would run. I really enjoyed this part of preparing for Spring Zone Rally because it kind of made me feel like a teacher..something I never expected to like much. I found myself becoming more involved and interested in finding out more information to present to the members because we made it into a game in which teams were created and trivia was played once I finish presenting all the candidates.. I loved it! It was some of the funniest and most entertaining meetings I’ve ever had in Key Club and I’d definitely recommend the club doing this again next year (although I’ll be gone).

During Spring Zone Rally, it was everything I expected it would be. We had time to go to workshops from 10 AM to 11 PM in which we could choose from Public Speaking, Marketing, Finance..etc. I chose the Public Speaking workshop and I loved it. I actually had a fellow Key Club Officer, Kendric Ferguson, who chose the workshop with me and I think he had a great time too. We introduced ourselves and listened to what our instructor told us about public speaking. I learned some pretty good information about posture, vocal training and annunciation of particular words which I’ll continue to use.

We also got to elect our future candidates and that was something pretty awesome in itself because it sort of resembled a political election, but on a smaller case. I loveedd it, because it gave us an opportunity to make a difference and ultimately decide who was going to govern us.. it was very empowering for the members and myself. I felt confident in the changes that would come next year because I can say that I handpicked who was elected.

I wish I was in KC again so I could see the differences in the district, but I’m 100% sure that I’m going to join Circle K when I go to college.. which is like the college version of High School Key Club. This has been one of the best experiences of my high school career and I want to continue it.

Running a 5k Reflection

10/1/14 - 2/21/15

During this five month period - post-5k run, I promised myself that I would at least continue to stay as active as possible because running a 5k was just the start to me becoming more physically fit. I honestly believe that running the 5k opened my eyes that I may not be the most athletic person, but I do have the capabilities to improve majorily. So during this period, I’ve vowed to run a half an hour at least once every two weeks for the five months in which I wanted to work on my endurance running. I realized that in the beginning, I am really pumped and I start out really fast and strong, and as time passes, I get burned out very fast and cannot continue.

I began a plan in which I decided that the first week, I’d use it as my trial run in which I’d just see how long I can run at a 7 mph rate over 30 minutes. Results are as follows:

Week 1: 2 minutes

Week one wasn’t so bad seeing that I’m not an athlete, but it gave me a sense of where my starting point was and how I could build on that.

Each week, I’d try to gain at least 30 seconds on my duration period before giving up and I think that was the hardest part of the entire thing... Seeing the time count down and you want to stop, but you can’t. It was a motivation and a hinderance at the same time.

The results of the following weeks are as followed:

Week 2: 2 minutes 30 seconds

Week 4: 3 minutes 12 seconds

Week 6: 3 minutes 50 seconds

Week 8: 3 minutes 57 seconds

Week 10: 4 minutes 5 seconds

Week 12: 4 minutes 14 seconds

Week 14: 4 minutes 30 seconds

Week 16: 5 minutes

Week 18: 5 minutes 32 seconds

Week 20: 5 minutes 56 seconds

Week 22: 6 minutes 20 seconds

I realized that it was definitely the hardest getting over the 4 minutes -- seconds, and I’m not sure why. I definitely think that if I had continued over a long period of time and more frequently, that I would have been able to run the entire 30 minutes at 7 mph. I also wish that I’d done in more frequently than once every two weeks because my body easily went out of shape and since I was conditioning it as much as I use to when training for the 5k, it definitely took a longer time for me to improve on my endurance because my body had to warm up everytime. So I know that I need consistency when it comes to this..and basically anything in life as well - I know that consistency is key.

One great thing about this whole running a 5k experience is that I actually lost 4 pounds during the last 5 months as a result of running and a little diet. I can wholeheartedly say that exercise totally makes a difference in lifestyle and health in general. One thing I’d like to do next time is get a friend to join me because it would be so much more enjoyable and just helping someone else get fit along with myself is not only a great bonding experience, but it would make me feel like I’m doing something good for someone else - and they would also be my motivation to keep going.

I’ve also decided that I’m going to join a running/jogging group when I get to college because I don’t want to let go of this progress, but instead I want to build on it!

I have now completed my 150 hours of CAS. It was an amazing experience overall and I absolutely would do it again. I will continue to participate in my CAS activities such as Key Club (as I am Vice President).

Key Club Reflection

Key Club hosted a PB&J-A-thon where we made over 250 Peanut butter and Jelly sandwiches for a local food shelter called El Sol located in Jupiter, FL.

It was literally so much fun! We were able to collaborate as a club and work together so smoothly to make all the sandwiches in 2 hours. We had about 40 members show up to this event and it was huge! Everyone was laughing, smiling and having a good time while doing something great for the community!

One thing that I remember was every station making the sandwiches and then it got to the packaging station and they had like 100 sandwiches that needed to be wrapped and they were freaking out (in a funny way) so I ran over to help them and we had this girl name Faith and she looked at me and said "You're amazing, you know that?" and it was genuine and I felt so good about everything in that moment. I've made so many connections, friends and good people through Key Club and it will only get better.

The lady who we contacted to donate the sandwiches to was so happy to know that we did it because she said that El Sol really needed the help! It felt great to know that we did something like that and it was appreciated. Turns out, the Sandwiches were given to little immigrant children while their parents went to work. Its so nice!

Key Club Reflection

This reflection is based on the Key Club sponsored Ice Bucket Challenge that was held at Dwyer. It was literally amazing! We had about 30 kids show up (some of them who weren't even in Key Club) and participated. Key Club was the first club to raise money for anything for this 2014-2015 school year so that was great!

I did not participate in the Ice Bucket Challenge, but I was there and I recorded everything. I had personal conversations with people and I asked them why they were doing it, and I constantly got "Because it's for a good cause and I truly thing I will be helping them"..that warmed my heart and I felt like all the hard work that went into planning and organizing the ALS Ice Bucket event was paid off with that single sentence. I couldn't have been happier with the result.

I have also attached a video with this of the actual event. It was a great experience and one that kicked off the year very well!

All the dates above are time spans in which there were Key Club officer meetings that I attended. Since I've become Key Club Vice President - it has been so much work and I love it! I truly have fallen in love with Key Club and the service events that we do. In our Officer or shall I say "Board of Director" meetings, we brainstorm future service events, come up with an agenda for our next meeting, talk about any problems or concerns, follow up on ideas and even spend some quality time just talking about each other's day. I love the companionship that has developed among the officers - it's like a family. Of course, with a family, there are always disagreements and we seem to have a lot of them! Especially Kendric and I. Although there are some disagreements between planning, we always get everything done and it turns out amazingly! That's how I know everyone works well together - we are able to fight for what we believe in but, it all turns out well. We are definitely a passionate group.. We've come up with so many service events and have successfully done SIX service events since the beginning of the year! And all of them had GREAT turnout. As Vice President, I am in charge of communications - I send out emails, remind101s, I make sure that the entire club is communicating. I love the fact that I have a very personal job with the members, so I feel connected with everyone and it's great.

I never realized how much work went into organizing a club until I started Key Club, and I really have to say that I believe we are managing this club very well..of course, there are always some kinks in our plans - but they always turn out smoothly.

One thing that I've learned how to do very well, it manage my time and learn how to keep a level mind during very chaotic times. We've had some many "OMG" moments that I've learned how to be flexible and resilient.

Our Key Club Adviser is Ms. Alba and boy! She's a firecracker! She's just as motivated to do things as our officers and she's amazing! I feel like Ms. Alba keeps everyone in reality sometimes and she always says that I'm the "Chill" one but, I think that I just am conditioned to very busy schedules because of IB and I've learned discipline in which I can use that as an advantage in Key Club. It's actually funny because all of our Key Club officers except one is in IB. It's not only comforting but, also very exciting to know that you have an "IB Family" to rely on in Key Club.
