I watched wuthering heights and I have thoughtsā¦ bad onesš I gave this movie a shot. I supported the casting of Jacob Elordi. But Emerald Fennel failed big time. She fumbled Jacob and surprisingly Margot (she did much better than I thought she would.) As a director Fennel doesnāt know how to bring the best out of her actors. She resorts to cheap, shock rocker type tricks and sex to distract from the fact that she clearly she has no idea what sheās doing. She just a vapid nepo-baby with a camera. If you read the book, the movie is nearly unwatchable. She stripped away everything that made Heathcliff who he was. He was a brute and a menace. Driven to madness by Cathy and the loss he faces. They never had sex in the book which just adds to the tragedy because they could never quite possess each other fully. And her marriage to Edgar ended up being the worst mistake of Cathyās life because her distance from Heathcliff is what eventually killed her. This idea of Heathcliff asking for consent from Isabella to treat her horrendously is ridiculous. It was just put in there so that he didnāt seem like such a bad guy and the audience could still root for him. By making him more palatable it took away from very important characteristics, that wonāt always pretty. The title sequence of their hair intertwining has a meaning. After Cathyās death Heathcliff rips the hair from her locket and puts his own in, so she can keep him with her in death instead of her husband. Later, Nelly picks up the discarded piece and twists them together. Tying them together in death as they were in life. But Emerald didnāt even put it in the movie. There are so many things wrong with this movie. I literally canātā Itās a tragedy that most people probably wonāt take the time to read the book and will go on thinking that that movie has anything to do with the novel.
