This icon of South-East Delhi traffic is seen every day by hundreds of thousands of Delhiites at the Mathura Road-Lodhi Road intersection, but holds quite a lot of mystery and enigma. The identity of the buried individual is not known, and the constructor is also unknown.

The structure, in its architectural capacity, exhibits visible Central Asian influences, more so than the ones surrounding it. With pure gold and lapis lazuli paintings and decorations, it is not only strikingly beautiful among the pale and horrid din and bustle of South East Delhi traffic, but is also the only surviving example of its style.

Amir Khusrow, one of the earliest examples of the Ganga-Jamni culture in the Indian subcontinent, a well-revered saint and poet from Delhi, composed this couplet in praise of the beauty and warmth of the city of Delhi.

Close to Amir's grave at Nizamuddin Auliya is the never-overlooked Humayun's Tomb, a massive monument situated right next to the Yamuna, north of the posh Nizamuddin West locality. An unfamiliar observer might liken this monument to the Taj Mahal, which Humayun's Tomb served as the inspiration for. This mausoleum was commissioned by Bega Begum, Mughal emperor Humayun's consort, after the pious and unfortunate emperor fell from the stairs in response to a prayer call to his death. (Might explain the steep steps at the tomb itself!) Although meant originally for the emperor, this monument has since housed the graves of many known and unknown Mughals, interred here by careless kings who did not see the building of another mausoleum as fit.
