The man seeking Leslie’s help in replacing the park swing was played by Jon Daly from “Kroll Show,” who played the drunk Leslie chased out of the slide in the pilot (glimpsed briefly in the finale’s montage of the parks staff hard at work, Teddy Roosevelt-style). The idea is that this is the same guy a decade later, having cleaned himself up after hitting rock bottom in front of Leslie, with neither character realizing who the other is. Not something most people would notice (Daly’s all but unrecognizable in the pilot cameo), but a stealth piece of full-circle casting. (x)

No More Late Nights - The New Yorker

Jon Stewart became not merely a scourge of phonies but the nation’s fact checker.

Jon Stewart recently announced he's stepping away from The Daily Show and inspired piece after piece where people fell all over themselves trying to grasp is legacy. The above piece by Emily Nussbaum is a good example what's being written; in it, she compares Stewart to Walter Cronkite and calls him "the nation's fact checker."

And those two statements are the kind of thing that irks me about the general response. Stewart was a funny host and by all accounts is a very nice man, but he's not a journalist and is hardly unassailable. He rightly called people on their BS, but usually when it served his show best. For example, his takedown of a CNBC host was less him trying to right a major wrong than it was him expanding on the jokes he told every night. 

After all, that's what Stewart was: a comedian. People never tuned into him looking for him to break a story or have a hard-hitting interview; they tuned in for jokes about what's in the papers/on TV. And that's what he delivered. Sure, Stewart played a role in shaping today's media landscape - there's a whole ilk of comedy shows that follow his template now - but I think all the praise coming to him is a bit overblown!
