Perhaps my largest beef with twilight, aside from the imprinting on a baby thing, is that Smeyer gives us foreshadowing for a Shakespeare level tragedy and then delivers a wattpad style happily ever after where the main characters get everything they've ever wanted.

The reason new moon is my favorite in the saga is not because I'm team Jacob (I'm very much NOT team Jacob) but because it's the book that hurts the most. Smeyer writes best when she's trying to rip her readers hearts out. What that says about her I'm not sure I want to unpack any time soon. (What that says about me is something I'm discussing with a professional.)

Think about how devastating most of midnight sun is. That's because she's trying hard to convince us, through soggy mop Edward's perspective, that this story we already know the ending of will be a tragedy. This time they won't end up together forever. This time Bella won't get everything she's ever wanted or needed. That Edward isn't worthy of a good ending. And God dammit if it doesn't make the book so hard to put down.

I want a twilight au with a gut wrenching tragic ending.

Genuinely, one of the measures that's stopped book banning the most when districts implement it, is having the would-be banners fill out a form that demonstrates if they've read the book or not. Like where they have the summarize the plot and characters and do a mini book report and give a review. It stops them in their tracks. This is why in my high school, every time someone wanted to ban a book it ended up going nowhere. There was one where a conservative student wanted to ban the manga "Legal Drug" for having a marijuana leaf on the cover, then got the form that required them to actually read and either balked, or read it and realized it was not pro-drug at all. (The other one that reduces book bans even further is "requiring the would-be banner to be affiliated with this actual school in some way, either by being a student, faculty/staff or a parent of a child at the school" because the vast majority of bans are "activists" with no affiliation with the school who just travel around trying to do this in districts all over the U.S. IIRC a few years ago someone crunched the numbers and just 51 parents were responsible for all the book bans that year nationally. 51! In a country with 50 states, with over 300 million people total!)

Laws like this indeed do a lot to stop fascist book censorship. They can also help legally protect librarians from getting fired or harassed for keeping books on the shelves! Some states like Rhode Island have already passed these laws. If you're in a blue state, look up whether you have laws like this on the books. MAYBE your state is trying to get one passed right now, like New York's Freedom to Read bill. call your state elected officials to voice support for it.

Alice has one sided beef with a classmate who continually wears couture pieces but wears them wrong. She uses a Saint Laurant Niki bag as a school book bag. Her ivy green leather elbow length Prada gloves have CAR OIL on them for goodness sake.

She's constantly considering robbing her classmate out of sheer frustration. They dont even treat the couture with love. This is highly entertaining to Edward as he watches her consider all outcomes in their financial literacy class. None of the outcomes are good and Alice can see that the girl will just get more vintage pieces to torment if she robs her of all her current closet gems.

The straw that breaks Alice is seeing her come to prom with an honest to goodness one of one Birkin that she's somehow managed to spill concealer all over the inside of it.

Now it's Alice's turn to dramatically run into the wilderness and scream at the northern lights. She even dramatically throws herself into the snow and lets it bury her like Edward did.

Jasper is forced to intervene and make the girl feel really guilty any time she wears couture until the madness ends. He stalks her day and night and fills her with unending guilt. It's definitely not the most ethical method but it works.

There's an open pit in the middle of our office plan that drops down into a bunch of very sharp spikes that kill you instantly. This is bad. People keep falling in there and dying. Someone put a sign up, the other day, all bright yellow so you can't miss it, that says "Beware!!! Spikes!!!"

The office immediately split into two factions over it. One says that if anyone falls in the spike pit it's their own fault for being so stupid and not watching where they're walking, so we should remove the sign. The other says that the sign is an insult, there shouldn't be a spike pit in our office at all, and having the sign up like that is just normalising the existence of the spike pit, so we should remove the sign.

We ended up removing the sign. Probably for the better. Still... for a while there it looked like it might have worked...
