Vulcan's Glory ((pre?-)TOS novel) review
Spoiler-free until the warning! (I'll make it very clear when we get there)
This novel follows Spock's first mission after being assigned on the Enterprise, under Pike's command. And it's written by DC Fontana! That was all I needed to know to want to read it.
The mission itself isn't very interesting, it's in line with some of the forgettable TOS episodes. They have to act as mediators between a primitive planet's 3 different groups. The planet itself, and the fact that Pike had been there before and wanted to return alone, reminded me of A Private Little War.
But there are some other plots:
The recovery of an ancient Vulcan gem, the eponym Vulcan's Glory (...did I use that word correctly?)
A murder mystery
A young Lieutenant Scotty making secretly making engine-room hooch (it's so unnecessary, but I liked getting to see this!)
(sigh) Romance between Spock and a Vulcan officer named T'Pris
Slightly off-topic rant: please, stop putting romance in TOS novels, nobody is reading them looking for romance, and when you read a few of them they just cheapen each other. They always have to return to the status quo, and they always claim to be the most important romance in Kirk's / Spock's / McCoy's life 🫠 it gets grating
That being said, the Vulcan making out depicted in the novel is very similar to the way fic writers do it (sending caresses with their minds, tugging at the bond, hands...). So your Spock fic is betacanonically accurate, according to a scene by DC Fontana herself :D
There's some will-they-won't-they with Pike and Number One that I enjoyed. And I loved seeing more of Number One. We also get some Doctor Boyce and a pretty OOC Spock (I'd imagine he'd be MORE repressed at this point in time, not the opposite).
How slashy is it?
Almost no slash at all. The one thing saving it from getting a zero is that Pike is describes as really attractive from Spock's POV. I also ship Number One and her friend. We get a scene in which they fight each other as training. Sure, I'll count it. 1.5/10 for slash.
And my general rating of the novel is a 6/10. It's alright for a ST book (bad as a normal book), I wouldn't particularly recommend it. I have like 3 posts about it under the tag #vulcan's glory but there really wasn't much noteworthy to post about.
From now on, SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!!

“Captain, is there a reason for why you have been staring at me for approximately five minutes?”
“Hmm.. Just thinking about something Bones told me earlier..”
“May I inquire as to what the doctor told you exactly?”
“Oh! I wouldn’t worry about it! Don’t mind me!”

I’m alive I promise, just drawing out some ideas to post over time. Hope everyone is well!
