the thing that gets me about about barbie is that barbie land wasn’t even purposefully a matriarchy, barbie land came about because of the way little girls were playing with their barbies, it wasn’t created by mattel it was created by the people using the toys, so the fact that the barbies ignored the ken’s and had girls night every night wasn’t because they had some bias against him, it was just an accurate depiction of how kids play with barbies. I had some ken dolls as a child and they were essential to the plot in the sense that of course my barbie has a boyfriend because that represented the world i saw around me, but also he didn’t have any purpose in my dream world because i was only interested in what the girls were doing because they represented me and how i wanted to be, I wanted girls night every night I wanted the girls to be president and austronauts and not because of some inherent feminist idea but because I was a girl and I wasn’t thinking about boys, ken was an accessory. this movie wasn’t made to change the world but it showed a different perspective than what we usually see which I thought was fun. Men don’t have to be the centre of all our stories and its not even because we hate them, sometimes we’re just not thinking about them

This was THE scene!! The way Barbie was afraid of being perceived as “ugly” and trying to avoid aging just for her to see people in the real world and understand what it really means. The way she softly says “you’re beautiful” and the woman plays along with her by saying “I know”. The way it was her first good experience with someone in the real world. Everything about it was just perfect

We're not appreciating the Weird Barbie enough. It's said in the movie that she helps everyone who need help while they always see her as someone who's not as good as them. She was friends with all dismissed Barbies and Kens, was there to offer support and safe shelter for everyone who needed it in Kendom, without her nothing in the movie would've been alright. When Stereotypical Barbie calls her "ugly and unwanted" she still helps her.

She was representing a woman in women's world who was pushed aside by other women because she didn't fit in but still had more wiseness and kindness than everyone who thought they're better than her.

One thing I appreciate about Barbie was the emphasis on age.

I was emotional when Barbie told the old woman how beautiful she was, and when Ruth came in and helped her become human.

It was also the fact that America Ferrera was the one having the crisis that caused Barbie to do the same.

The whole concept of the toy doesn't end in childhood. Cause she is an idea; Barbie is forever. She's everything. She's meant to inspire women to keep going for what they dream. You don't age out of these ideas, they grow with you, just like how Margot Robbie grew with America Ferrera.

the fact that the first female human experience barbie goes through is being self conscious and experiencing sexual harassment mirrors how growing up as a girl one day you’re okay and the next all of a sudden you feel bad about your appearance and are receiving unwanted advances is something that can be so fucking important to be recognized in film

residents of barbieland thinking barbie fixed everything. barbie near-immediately being sexualized and objectified in the real world. teenage girls thinking barbie is horribly misogynistic and supports the patriarchy. so many people on the Mattel board only valuing barbie due to consumerism. barbie thinking she can’t do anything and someone else will come and fix misogyny. barbies brainwashed into enjoying being subservient. barbie feeling like she isn’t enough. gloria telling her she is enough. gloria pointing out the difference between giving women equal treatment and “society claiming they have empowered women by actions they have already done to justify any possible misogynistic action in the future.” gloria saying how nothing women do ever satisfies the patriarchy. the movie itself acknowledging that the movie’s view on feminism is from a white perspective. THE MOVIE EMPHASIZING HOW FEMINISM ISN’T SUPPORTING A MATRIARCHAL IDEAL, IT’S GIVING ALL GENDERS EQUAL RIGHTS AND RIGHT TO IDENTITY. paralleling real world society by giving kens only a foothold in power like giving women only a foothold in power.

feminism isn’t a giant chunk of an idea that can easily be discredited into something as simple as “support women.” it’s a complex issue with individuals of different perspectives that deals with intersectionality and confronting completely new worlds in an attempt to understand others. long story short this movie is a masterpiece

Does anyone else think that the criticism against the Barbie movie comes off as extremely tone deaf? The movie has an extremely animated, almost cartoonish tone and despite having a precise message regarding women empowerment, it was also clear to me that you aren't supposed to take everything in the film literally. Lots of people have been calling the film anti-male but I don't think that's true. It's just very pro-female. I didn't come out of the film feeling as though the film was suggesting that the world should be a matriarchy. To me it was clear that the patriarchy vs matriarchy thing was done in pure jest. To me the main message of the film was to tell girls not to be embarrassed of their femininity and that being girly, fun, and barbie-like doesn't have to prevent you from being someone who is ambitious and powerful. What makes barbie land magical isn't that it's a matriarchy, it's the fact that women can be goofy and fun and feminine yet still be taken seriously. A lot of people have been calling America Ferrera's monologue cringe and woke but it fit the tone of the film perfectly. Her monologue isn't supposed to address the nuances and complexities of all the problems modern women face, it's supposed to be uplifting, heartfelt yet easy to understand. I think the main problem here was that people won't allow this film to be what it is- a fun movie targeted towards women who grew up loving Barbie. This movie isn't trying to change the world. It exists so that people who love Barbie can sit back for two hours and laugh as Barbie experiences the same things the rest of us do. I get that there are some jokes made about the patriarchy but how is that really any different from men cracking jokes about their wives and girlfriends being crazy. Men have been calling feminists butthurt snowflakes who can't take a joke for years but look what happens when the tables are turned. I personally really enjoyed the movie and I'm tired of people looking for excuses to tear it apart. I understand that people are allowed to criticize movies but I wish the criticisms were within reason and not made simply with the intention of having to hate on something targeted towards women.
