She scoffed at the mention of Survival Skills. “Yeah, like that class taught us anything useful.” She’d almost earned a smile, she could feel it ( or so she thought… hoped, maybe ) but then Jaha had to go and ruin it. Damn it Jaha, as though there weren’t enough reasons to dislike him already. The former Chancellor eyed her curiously as he gave a quick rundown of leaving with them, about the City of Light and getting there and long journeys and danger… she wasn’t really listening, to be completely honest. She wasn’t here so she could find some mythical city of promise, she didn’t even believe it actually existed, figured they’d be back here in a couple weeks dirty and disappointed.
She was just here to make sure Murphy didn’t get maimed, or die, as best she could manage.
They started walking, and she kept her head down, wary of one of the delinquents noticing her and giving her away to Bellamy or Jasper upon their return. She was banking on them not returning to their rooms for a while, giving her and the others a chance to be far enough away neither boy would entertain the idea of trying to retrieve her. ( how humiliating would that be, having one of them track her down like a wayward puppy ) Once they were out of camp and a couple hundred yards from the gate she relaxed, trying to stay mostly inconspicuous at Murphy’s side, but eventually she had to talk. “So what are the odds Jaha’s bringing us all along in case he needs some human sacrifices?” She asked sarcastically, shooting him a little smile.
— Murphy let out what sounded like a chuckle as his stormy hues fell to the ground beneath their feet, the almost grin nearly hidden when he looked down, oblivious that Fox had caught it— and was purposely trying to make him smile. Jaha's appearance ruined everything though as the tension and hatred returned to his features, hardening his gaze as he looked up at the former Chancellor while he spoke. Rolling his eyes, John looked to Fox, a bored expression on his face. The speech ended quickly enough and then they were heading out of camp and up into the woods. He noticed her trying to look inconspicuous and to him, it did exactly the opposite but he kept his mouth shut and didn't comment, wondering again why she was being so nice to him and thinking she had some ulterior motive for it and maybe that was why she seemed so tense.
They got little ways out of camp, far enough that they could no longer hear the sounds of people when he noticed Fox begin to loosen up and relax. "I know that look. So why are you really doing this?" he asked, glancing over at her. The mention of Jaha needing human sacrifices illicited a scoff, John's eyes rolling in their sockets. "Sucks for them, at least it won't be us." he gave her a small smile, observing Fox's reaction to that as he lifted his shoulders in a lazy shrug.
They walked for hours, occasionally talking back and forth. When it started to get dark Jaha called out for everyone to stop and take a rest for a few hours. Murphy found a nook in an outcropping of rock and gestured for Fox to join him. Out of everyone in their party, it was her he trusted most. He didn't know why, but the farther they got from camp the less paranoid and relaxed he became with the idea that maybe Fox didn't have ulterior motives after all.
