Luz went into work with a smile on his face, a few plans on what he was working on, a paragraph in the newspaper about this new bar in town, yes George supposed it was a little borning but with his sense of humour he could make it a great hook for people to read.
Getting to his desk he was told by Nixon to go see winters in his office. Lewis Nixon, this big shot whose family owned the rights to these newspapers and he had taken over the rights to it, with that he hired his best friend Richard Winters. Luz didn't mind either of them; he'd always chosen to work with them and was glad to be hired.
Putting his bag under the desk George fixed his shirt and walked towards the office that was labelled 'R. Winters' and knocked.
Winters shouted for him to come in and he swiftly did. Sitting down at the front of the desk as he would for any talk, he wasn't too worried about what the older man might say because George knew he'd get a way out of it.
"So George I need to talk to you about the sector you're writing for this newspaper." A look of dread flashed on Luz's face before winters quickly spoke. "It's not anything too bad I promise just that, me and nix thought it would be better for you to take over the front page for this week's paper."
George instantly lit up, this was great, this was better than what he was thinking until a thought crossed his mind. "I thought that web was taking that this week, why me?" Winters looked at luz and then at his paper back at luz again. "Yeah he was supposed to but supposedly he and his boyfriend have decided to go on holiday leaving us without an idea on who would work on the front page."
The ginger would shake his head as if web would feel it in some way. George got giddy at this, he had never written for the front page before mostly because he couldn't stop adding jokes to his normal paragraphs and they were worried about that on the front page. He would smile at winter's.
"What is the front page on? And when should I start or had it been started?"
"Web had started a headline to it but he never actually attended the place that it was on, said place being pulpit boxing. A club for young and older boxers that had a championship with one of the trainer's there" pulling out a few pieces of paper with the introduction Web had written, Richard started talking again. "Joe toye fighting john lokley, the club had reached out for advertising and we agreed to it because joe is a local here, and we want to do the best for them."
Winters smiled at Luz, knowing look that he'd take it. "I'd suggest starting today I'll write down the address of the club and you can head there."
With the sticky note in hand and his bag on his back George was walking down the street to the club. He wondered what it would be like. He knew of Toye, not personally just from others talking about him, he sounded like a dream. Humble calm, hell, though George how could a boxer be calm? Their job is to fight.
Finally Luz stood outside of it. He liked the look of it, not too much and not too little but had a poster of the two men.
George walked in shifting his bag on his back. There were two guys in the ring already, George could spot which one was toye. That had memorised him, toye had memorised him. This was Joe toye in the flesh and looking like a ram or maybe an angel with how those muscles shifted on his back and biceps shifted.
Walking about he would search for an office to maybe talk in or wait to talk to toye, he had gotten lost in one of the hallways just as he went to turn luz felt a hand on his shoulder.
Turning George was met with one tall and sweating joe toye. He had frozen looking up at the man in front of him. Yeah, he knew that Toye would look good but this up close he looked like an angel from the sky came to bless him, even covered in sweat joe toye looked gorgeous.
"Aren't you the paper guy, who you looking for" Joe's voice was gruff and quiet looking at George. While George stared at him finally computing that Joe had talked and answered. "Uh, yeah, yeah. Im George luz i work with the newspaper, i already know you obviously"
Toye nodded his head, a smile fell on his lips. Turning he would wave a hand to follow him. “Come with me, I'll take you to an office” and George followed right after him.
They'd been sitting in that office for around fifteen minutes talking over how George could write about him and about the club. Joe's voice had stayed low the whole time and George would sit and wonder if he always spoke like that.
George liked listening to that voice. It was soothing in an odd way, he hoped there would be a way to hear it more often and not just for this reason.
“If thats all Mr luz I've got training to get back to” Joe stared at him for a long moment, wondering what he was thinking or planning to do and spoke quickly before George could speak. “If you would like, I could let you stay around tomorrow and the day after to help you write, only if you'd want to.”
A smile lit up on the brunette's face, a huge one bigger than normal. Luz nodded his head quickly.
“I would love to and call me George or just call me luz theres no Mr between friends”
George went red, he never got embarrassed that wasn't George Luz's way, he was a comedian, a joker and a smooth guy but when Joe raised his eyebrow and spoke. “We're friends now?” In a tone luz couldn't fully put a finger on. But luz was red.
“Well yes I mean I'm going to be working with you so-” the taller man stood up making luz lose his trail of thought. Joe was smiling, one that didn't match his face. George stood up and toye held his hand out to shake.
“Im joking, course’ we're friends luz”
That's all Luz thought about when he left the boxing club, it was late in the afternoon that made the feeling better, how soft and nice it looked outside.
He walked back to the office to collect more papers for the front page and waved at people as usual. He couldn't make any jokes yet George was still lost in thought from Joe Toye, an angel.
The walk home was quicker than imaginable. Usually he was annoyed at how long it would take from the office to home because then there was less time left in the day to do things. It felt like a mission to get home and write these papers, never once had he been this excited to start writing something.
He buzzed in and climbed the stairs to get in and unlocked the door. Eugene was sitting on the couch with his laptop probably studying. Eugene roe was a medical student at freedom valley and luz had decided to live together with them being friends for so long and it was cheap to do so and more comfortable.
George didn't want to bother him so he moved quietly to his own room to get started on the writing.
That night was spent writing drafts, putting them in the bin and restarting. He kept struggling to find the right words to pull people into it. The words weren't fitting the right way.
Luz would give up, he could barely see what he was writing so instead he decided to go to sleep, he would see Toye tomorrow at the ring, write some things down, take a few pictures, maybe talk with the other man again.
Early the next morning he got up searching his drawers for the nicest shirt that would match the rest of his outfit. George never cared for looking too good. He always believed he was the best part of the outfit but right now he wanted to look nice to see Toye again.
He was dressed ready and packed to go to the club, his bag over his shoulder as he went to the kitchen. Luz thought Eugene was still asleep but got jump scared by him sitting on a chair in the living room with his scrubs on.
“Gene? You're up earlier than me, why?” George's voice was mixed with confusion; he couldn't even make a joke, he was just confused because Eugene never got up this early. Eugene would answer back in a sort of unhappy tone. “Ive got to go do practice at the hospital so im up early hoping Hefferon would drive me but he ain't up yet” Oh, yeah neither of them had a car.
“If i had a car doc i would've drove you, anything for the doctor” He joked putting coffee on. “You want some gene? might wake you up”
“No, I'll get it on the way to the hospital” George shrugged and made his own drink, saying bye to Eugene and quickly getting out of the apartment.
The walk to the club wasn't long. It was cold this early but wasn't bad at all.
Toye was standing outside of the club with a cigarette in hand just looking out of the parking lot, didn't wave or nod at George until he got closer and George was the first to talk.
“Good morning, I thought I'd get here early.”
Luz was still smiling when toye spoke with gruffness, more gruff than the other day. “Yeah good morning to you too, this fuckin’ early is crazy” he shook his head dropping the cigarette. “Lets go in there's no one here yet but i gotta get set up so you can sit somewhere”
And that's how George ended up sitting on a chair watching Toye lift all this equipment around, he couldn't look away he was supposed to be writing but joe toye doing all this made George feel something he couldn't properly name but it was good.
Luz swore Toye kept looking over at him too, giving George a subtle look that the brunette could only say was subtle flirting. And he didn't want it to stop.
That was the same routine for two days and on Monday the newspaper was released.
‘Joe Toye v John Lokley. This Wednesday at six pm, Pennsylvania's own Joe Toye will embark on a six round fight with New Jersey's John Lockley, get your tickets and prepare to have the night of your lives.’
There was more on the front page a picture too, George had taken the picture himself of the two men facing each other off.
George luz thought he had done a good job on writing the paper, Winters even told him that he was proud and hoped to have George work on another front page at some point.
But even while doing all this writing and getting thanked he only thought about one thing and one person, Joe Toye. Yesterday was the last day George would see Joe until the fight and the man luz just couldn't let that happen he needed to talk to him out of work.
So his plan was to go to the boxing club and have the courage to ask toye to go out on Tuesday to a bar and talk.
It wasn't hard to find the other man; he was alone and at one of the boxing bags, George quickly moved up to him.
“Hello” That was not how he planned to start speaking and joe just stared at him blankly he just went on speaking. “I wanted to ask if you'd like to go for a few drinks, tomorrow night just a treat before the fight you know?”
Joe looked at Luz. Didn't smile yet or make any face just stared at him for a moment and then there was a light in his eyes and a one sided smile, not a smirk like you would usually see on him.
“That sounds good, paper boy. How about I give you my number and I'll meet you here and we can go?”
And that's how George ended up with a date for Tuesday, the number of the boxer in his pocket and excitement he could not contain at all while going back to the office.
In hopes that this could be more than a drink at some point, more than the paper and more than the fight. He wanted more of that angel
