Message to a girl going to college

Be willing to try anything once, but don't make the same mistake twice.

You're gonna meet a lot of people, a lot of them are worth giving a chance. You might lose touch with some people. It sucks, but it happens. Don't trust guys, especially if alcohol is involved, but don't be too afraid of them to have fun.

Get involved with something: you meet new people and it helps to find your passion. Most of the time anybody I know joined some group, team, club, frat, or whatever, they loved it.

Learn your limits, and I don't just mean for partying. Figure out how much of a courseload is too much, and decide how much time you need at the very least to write an 8-page paper, because sometimes it comes to that. Work the system: try out classes early on and drop them if you need to.

Change your classes if you want to. Change your major if it isn't right. College is about finding the best path for you, you might need to try a few out. It seems like about half of people with something in mind when they enter college change their path, and they're happier for it.

Don't forget to take fun classes!

My best friend recently asked me what the last uncomfortable thing I did was, and I didn't answer. Why? Because I'm so concerned with my short term comfort that I refuse to see the signs right in front of my eyes that my long term shows no signs of looking up. If I keep sitting here not improving anything I'm still going to feel this discontent far into the future. But I keep sitting here because it's easier to watch movies and go shopping and twiddle my thumbs than fix my resume, apply for jobs, and find that new place to live. It's easier to live off the kindness of others than to push myself even though the rewards of hard earned success are better for everyone in the end and I know it. So I'm still sitting here complaining about not getting anywhere instead of using slightly more energy to get ahead.

I'm uncomfortable whenever there's a makeout scene in a movie or show. Not because the idea of two mouths intermingling is gross, it is but that's not the point. It's because I've never been in their shoes and it hurts to be reminded of missing out on a basic human experience. Maybe our ancestors didn't do it, but I'm not trying to focus on the semantics of my phrasing (it's just a hard habit to break). What I'm focused on is that kissing (making out being a little too specific of a category) is so prevalent in the culture of the young American (because I can't really know what other cultures do without doing a lot more homework) that it hurts me deeper inside than usual to feel like something so important is missing. Any genuine seeming expression of a deep-seeded feeling unsettles me because I don't feel capable of emulating it, but kissing digs somewhat deeper because it is both a physical and emotional state that I feel so far behind the curve in knowing. To be open in that way must be wonderful, why else would so many people do it at the frequency they do, but why does seeing something wonderful make me feel so awful that I layer the misery of envy with the self-hate of wishing the pleasure out of others' lives?

I've always expected to be so much more, but I don't know how to start. I'm tired of waiting for some big moment to set me off, but I don't know where to start. It's always been such a part of me to just believe in future success that I've never really thought about the work to put in to get there. Now every day I wake up with the idea that this is gonna be the start of something great, but I never get around to actually starting it. I've made so many excuses that I don't even know what I believe any more. I'm torn between knowing I'm definitely something great and I can overcome anything and feeling like I'm doomed to a life of failures and being a disappointment. A disappointment to myself, and a disappointment to others. But maybe they've all forgotten about me. I don't know which prospect scares me more, I'm just pretty sure it's happening. I'm scared all day of future failures, but all I can think about are the ones I already have. Being led by fear is not ideal, but I like to think it keeps me out of trouble. But then why do I keep thinking of so many new experiences as failures too? If I'm failing this much that fear sure as hell ain't doing its job, but I'm still letting it steer.

I've always thought that I didn't have a type, but now I'm pretty sure that I must because why else would I not be interested in so many reasonable people? Maybe if somebody could tell me my type I could narrow down the search.

I wonder if ignorance really is bliss because I’ve seen some people today that just don’t have it all upstairs and they leave with what seems like a lot more joy in their lives than there is in mine.

I want to be the old guy who still has a job just to keep busy and does the sudoku and the crossword in the newspaper to keep his mind active in 50 years, but I don't even do that stuff now.

As I lay in bed, no hints of sleep, I realize that I’ve waited so long for the idea of who I should be to just come along that I might have missed the experiences that make that man.
