Masters and Fathers in Star Wars
The theme of fatherhood is something central in star wars
In the first trilogy it was LukeÂŽs curiosity about his parents which lead him to tackle his hero journey towards meeting him and rescue him while for Anakin in the PT, knowing he didnÂŽt have a natural father, he wanted to find someone who could be that for him, the PT shows three characters who could have been that for Anakin but never quite became it.
ThatÂŽs the menaning behind Anakin calling Obi-Wan his "master" even after he has graduated into a jedi knight. Anakin was aware of the differences in culture between what he had with his mother and the Jedi Order, still he wanted to tell Obi-Wan he was part of his family, that he saw him as his father but Obi-Wan never felt comfortable with those words or that kind of relationship with Anakin, for Obi-Wan saw him in relation to Qui-Gon, Anakin was the brother Qui-Gon left him and as a Jedi never knew a father so he didnÂŽt truly identified as one for Anakin. So Anakin called him "master" as a substitute, so Obi-Wan could be comfortable with that name.
But Lucas built Star Wars in rymes, so during AnakinÂŽs greatest moment of pain, when he felt lost and completely defenseles, he asked Obi-Wan to be that for him one more time, it was an analogy for this:

Obi-Wan rejects the meaning behind Anakin calling him master, he isnÂŽt his father and never wanted to be his father, he wanted to train the chosen one as a promise to Qui-Gon and saw Anakin as his brother and after Anakin betrayed the Jedi he isnÂŽt his master anymore and his duty is to kill him so he leaves him behind to die alone.
THIS was the moment Anakin eyes turned completely yellow, the moment he fell completely to the darkside, Obi-Wan was never his father and would never be his family he had to accept it and deal with it.

Palpatine answer the call, because he indeed wants to be AnakinÂŽs master because he sees him as his property and seeks to keep him chained to the darkside. Anakin knows he could have let him die, like any sith master would do with an apprentince that no longer could serve them but Palpatine didnÂŽt, this created the fierce loyalty Vader gave Palpatine for many years.
But Anakin ALWAYS wanted to be a real father, he wonÂŽt give his child less than that so if Luke, his Son, wantÂŽs him to be his father, he is going to be exactly that, and give him exactly what he asked, because Luke isnÂŽt a mission for him, Luke isnÂŽt AnakinÂŽs property, Luke is AnakinÂŽs child, Luke is AnakinÂŽs family and he loves him with unconditional love, he will do anything for him.
At the heart of SW thereÂŽs the way we built connections and how some of them are accepted and how some are rejected but as Shmi and Anakin tought, mercy is the connection that can heal a galaxy, mercy as unconditional love. ThatÂŽs the Skywalker family legacy.
