MARGUERITE BAKER WAS the first of her family to succumb to infection because of her deep capability for empathy. she was the most willing to welcome eveline into her life & the most enthusiastic to embrace a new daughter as her own. the e - virus took advantage of her love & hospitality, warping it into a prolific breeding ground for rage & resentment.

HELL’S MOUTH GAPES tauntingly above her, all blades & teeth & suffocating smoke. the sweltering heat is a pervasive breath on the back of marguerite’s neck, forcing tangled hair to cling heavy to her exposed skin. like a dream, the strange environment seems to bow before the presence of a singular being. gnashing maws & uprooted trees distort around HER might.
she believed in heaven when she was still alive —— really, truly alive. though she was never the most devout & often failed to lug her family to weekly service, marguerite always kept a sliver of faith tucked beneath her pillow. she prayed on holidays & considered herself a good samaritan until the darkness crept in. then, the only god she honored was the disease that took her family.
the sweetest voice lures marguerite out from her own memories, snapping her vision back to a blinding halo. ruby - red lips tempt like wine, speaking of beginnings & destruction as if they were the same. spoken in that tone, marguerite is nearly willing to believe that they are.

IT WAS SLOW, PAINFUL, WITH NO CURE. Seizing every part of him, twisting it into what it believed to be suitable for it’s needs. A living contagion! Too intelligent, and too quick for him to catch. Never knowing he’d been infected until it was too late— neighborly hospitality being his own undoing. A killer caught like a rat, by an unseen, and unexpected monster that disguised itself as a family he believed to be harmless…
He sits up slowly, mouth dry, tasting of bile. Had he died? A breathe leaves him, wheezy as his lungs cleared whatever vomit was left. Should any victim be surprised that their captors were there to greet them? As willing as he was to be there, he would of never wished to become yet another undying terror. BUT HE WASN’T ‘HIM’ ANYMORE WAS HE? Feeling a disturbing satisfaction in whatever she meant.
“ I feel….better. ” he replies. “ – and hungry. ”
IT'S THE EAGER ones that please her the most : the greedy, the covetous. they still manage to provide an old woman with purpose. marguerite's dull eyes widen at the sight of him, a crescent smile growing until it splits her face in two. though his outward appearance remains the same as before, she knows what beast lingers below the surface. if her admirable glare could devour, he'd already be long gone.
❛ you're one of us, now . . . ❜ it's a grim statement laced with sentimentality. her hand reaches forward & grazes about his knuckles, feeling the e - virus surge just beneath his skin. she wonders just how the infection will manifest —— what gruesome traits the mold will fixate upon. stepping away from his metamorphosis, she begins a gentle path for the nearby kitchen.

THE SILVER SOUTH clings to her flesh in the form of sweat - beads, marinating old skin with a rancid fervor. if the heat doesn't kill her, the impatience will. bony knuckles press into her cheeks while she stares dreamily at their newest family member, waiting for any sign of mutation to surface. how proud he was to strike at his victim ; how giddy he was to swallow it down ! the smell of it still sugarcoats the air.
it's been a long while since she's seen a successful transformation. the last two girls were wretched failures ( UNWORTHY ! ) that continue to taunt from their waterlogged graves. but he —— oh, he just oozes potential ! marguerite licks over cracked lips as she leans closer to him.

THOUGH THE MOLD is an incredibly glutinous thing, it actually requires no sustenance in order to survive ! it's capable of lying dormant for years on end, lingering in the darkness while seeping into the surrounding environment. on occasion, it likes to toy with its hosts & simulate hunger pangs, but it does not need to eat. it merely revels in the experience & encourages feasts whenever possible.
