I AM UNSEEN, UNKNOWABLE. LIKE A ROCK IN THE RIVER.
I can’t believe this stupid, beautiful show is coming to an end...
VERSE: CONSCIENCE IS THE SENTINEL OF VIRTUE (defecting Inquisitor AU)
Rather than fall to his death in the flaming wreckage of Tarkin’s Star Destroyer, the Grand Inquisitor is ‘rescued’ by Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger to be taken prisoner. A captive of the Phoenix Squadron rebel cell, they interrogate him and attempt to gain information from him, to no avail. All the while he waits and watches, learning all that he can about the insurgents so that when he breaks free, he can return to his Master and tell him everything to begin bringing about their enemies’ demise. He pays particular attention to Jarrus, Bridger, and the apparently still alive Ahsoka Tano, in order to try and learn just how many other Jedi remain.
When the Fifth Brother and Seventh Sister appear, the Jedi try to learn more about them from him, but he is even more steadfast in his refusal: he would never betray his ‘children’, and he has every confidence that they will be able to defeat the rebellion. But when it becomes apparent that they are not making much progress, the Grand Inquisitor starts to play the part of the reluctant, slightly defeatist prisoner. He feeds the rebels tidbits of true information about Imperial movements and installations, believing it will lead them to situations that will be impossible for them to emerge victorious from. But they astound him with their resolve in the face of impossible odds, which he can only admire, but it also drives him to tell him more to try and entrap them. As well as trying to build up the closest thing to trust they would ever show him.
Eventually, the three rebel Jedi embark on their mission to Malachor in the hopes of defeating the Inquisitors. Knowing about the shadow in that place and how his order of hunters are watching it, the Grand Inquisitor feels confident that they will meet their demise there. He doesn’t go with them; he still refuses to give up any intel relating to the Inquisitors, and should he come back into contact with them, the rebels would no doubt lose their most valuable captive. So he eagerly waits, expecting to never hear from them again. But he’s shocked when Jarrus and Bridger return, and he soon learns of Ahsoka’s sacrifice, and the apparent death of the three Inquisitors they faced there.
Learning that his ‘children’ are no more hits him harder than he could ever expect. He had thought that the passion and protection for young beings he had as a Temple Guardian had died. But now a twisted, mourning version of that surfaces. It makes him realise how expendable his kind always were to the Empire, and seeing how kind the rebels are...it reminds him of better days. And so he soon decides to forego his façade and truly join the Rebellion. As the years pass, he acts as an operative behind the shadows, giving up all the information he knew about the Empire and working to keep it as updated as possible. As for his allegiance in the Force, he is no longer a follower of the dark side (though still uses some of its teachings), but nor is he a Jedi again. He continues as one of the lesser-known members of the Rebellion until the Empire is brought to an end, and then he finds out that the beings who mattered the most to him survived, and so plans to make amends.

For a moment he didn’t recognise the strange creature, yet felt drawn to it somehow. Peering at the lanky, thin frame, the Pau’an tried to puzzle out just who he was look at. And then...the other turned, and he could see their face. What remained of it. Scars now long-healed but no less ugly, wounds he had inflicted and was so used to seeing covered by a helmet. For a moment, he could feel himself lose his breath. It couldn’t be...they had died, all of them...but he was here.
The former Grand Inquisitor started walking towards the other man, who still looked like the boy he had known, raised, tormented. Scared, shaken, alone. Was he still alone? No. No more. If it is him, I will make sure he never will be again. When he was still some distance away, he gazed at the green-skinned being until he has his attention. “You’re...you’re alive.”

This chamber was buried deep within the mountain that served as their base, their home, where the floor turned from metal to stone, and the lights which illuminated the base proper came to an end. Now the only source of light was his blade, the blood-red glow falling on demonic formations of rock as he stalked his prey through them. “You’re weak.” A slash of his weapon caused the thick stalagmite before him to crumble. “Pathetic.” More swings to remove obstacles in his path, shadows flitting over his face, curled up in a feral visage akin to any of nature’s finest killers. “Years of training you, raising you to be the perfect follower, and now I see that it was wasted. If you cannot stand against me, who can you stand against?” Before the son tried to run, he extended his hand to hook an invisible grip around his ankle, tugging so as to topple him. “No more. It ends for you here, now. You have no more chances to prove you deserve to live.”

When the verbal barb had been delivered, any thoughts about the meeting going too well disappeared, replaced by the slow build-up of simmering anger he was so familiar with. He had kept it contained in front of the commandants, the only sign a slight clenching of his fists, a hardening of his gaze. Of course the man would find a way to shift the blame from himself, and it was the Inquisitor’s own fault for providing the perfect reason why it should be redirected towards him. He had been clumsy on this mission, rushing in without thinking when the agent had decided to forego any sensible planning. To prevent a pointless loss of men and resources, he had told himself. Though even if that were true, it would not have been enough to save him from his Master’s punishment had he been present. No, he knew what the real cause for his rash action was: distraction, borne of sentiment.
The golden fool would’ve been dead had he not intervened, and it was only upon realising this that he had bound into action too quickly. Yet the gratitude that was warranted (escaped rebels be damned, there would be other days to catch them) did not appear to be forthcoming.
Very well, then. He was used to taking what he wanted. What he deserved.
It was just the two of them now, turning into one of the corridors that was deserted at this hour. He kept the smug-looking human in the corner of his eye, thinking of ways to wipe that satisfied smile off his face. By removing his lips, if necessary. On his other side, doors led into smaller, more sparsely decorated meeting rooms. Halfway down the passage, a wave of his hand prompted one of them to open. With his other, he grabbed Kallus’ forearm. Movements fast and fluid, he twisted himself around, spinning and letting go, allowing his counterpart to stumble back through the doorway. The fire stronger in his eyes now, the Pau’an stalked in after him, a press of the panel sealing them both inside.
Another burst of aggressive precision; long fingers curled around the bright pink flesh of the human’s throat, and with another spin he slammed the man back into the wall beside the door. “That,” he snarled, leaning in so that Kallus could feel his hot, panting breath on his ear, “was not very gracious of you. If that is my reward for saving your life, I’ll hand you to the rebels myself next time.”

THE MEMORY STAYS WITH HIM. elongated fingertips graze across tender flesh of still-healing wounds ‘pon his face. it does not hurt much, not anymore in the months that have passed since. the nerves are burnt. dead. ( THE STENCH FAMILIAR. ) this causes him to recall a memory ———— the unusual circumstance leads him to turning to the one responsible for this … anything. anything is better than silence after all.
❛ do you recall the predicament of the sixth brother? ❜
┊ ˚˖↷ @iinquiisitor
For a moment his eyes remained closed as he continued to follow thoughts and dwell on meditations, even after his...counterpart had spoken. With so many tasks to perform for his Master, there was little time for such peaceful thinking, except during the time spent on vessels transporting him to the next mission. Taking that time to calm himself and focus on what he was to do was useful preparation. And the Grand Inquisitor ensured that he was always prepared. But he was not used to the Brother’s presence. Most of the Inquisitors rarely worked with others, but for this, he had deemed it necessary to bring this one along. And it provided an opportunity to keep an eye he felt was needed on him.
Do you recall...of course he did. He forgot nothing. He never forgot those who had fallen, even before the dark times. But they did not matter. Only his children (that were his in the most deranged sense of the word) were important. And upon hearing the question, the sight of the former Brother’s charred body lying on the fields of Raada appeared before him. It faded as he opened his eyes and breathed deeply.
“What of it?” He had no time for this child’s foolishness.
