Section 8 Discussion Questions
1. Why is arrogance considered to be “the enemy of the Lotus Sutra” and what is the antidote to arrogance in our own lives? (WLS-6, 240 - 42)
2. President Toda said, “This [truth] isn’t something I studied and learned. It’s something I remembered.” Elaborate on this. (WLS-6, 243 - 44)
3. After reading President Ikeda’s passage on page 244 about winning in the present moment, explain the deeper meaning of cause and effect. (WLS-6, 244 - 46).
4. Read the passage of “The Opening of the Eyes,” on pages 254 - 55 aloud together. What strikes you most about this passage and how can we act on this in daily life?
5. On page 258 President Ikeda says, “Even the Lotus Sutra could be used to incorrectly justify discrimination. What is necessary to prevent the danger of such distortion from occurring?” Discuss this passage and what it means for our actions. (WLS-6, 258 - 59)

Discussion Questions for Section 7
1. After reading pages 211 - 214, what are key points for leadership?
2. This chapter includes the famous passage, “Therefore, Universal Worthy, if you see a person who accepts and upholds this sutra, you should rise and greet him from afar, showing him the same respect you would a Buddha” (LSOC, 365). Why is this passage considered the “ultimate transmission”? (WLS-6, 227 - 29)
3. Shakyamuni explains four conditions for a person to “acquire” the Lotus Sutra. These four points correspond to four essential points of daily Buddhist practice. What are they and what is their significance? (WLS-6, 216 - 18)
4. In this section President Ikeda encourages us to focus on “substance, not formality.” Explain this, and provide some examples. (WLS-6, 222 - 26)
