The fire crackles in the hearth, filling your and your husband’s chambers with a comforting heat. You shuffle slightly beneath the silken sheets after being roused from your sleep by an unidentified noise. Your body aches in protest as you clumsily move a hand to rub at your closed eyes in an attempt to wake yourself and find out what disturbed you. When you finally gather the strength to sit up a familiar soft voice meets your ears.
“Go back to sleep, my love. I have her.” Baelor voice almost makes you drift back into your dreams but you fight it, realising what the noise is. Your daughter, born only mere days ago, crying out into the low lit space of the room as her father rocks her gently in his arms.
“What is the matter?” You mumble out, adjusting your position so you can get up again if you need to. Youd only fed her what felt like mere minutes ago, could she be hungry again already?
“She needed changed.” He says, mismatched eyes locked onto her tiny red face.
You hold your arms out in his direction. “Pass her here.”
“I have already done it.” He says matter-of-factly.
“What?”
“I have already changed her. I had hoped to soothe her cries before she woke you, but it seems I am no match for her lungs.” He circles to your side of the bed still rocking her slightly as he looks down at you. He always looked beautiful, but something about him lit only by the warm glow of the fire, wearing only his small clothes and cradling your newborn makes him look divine.
“That is not the job of a prince.”
“No, but it is the job of a father. And I am her father before anything else.” He takes a gentle seat onto the bed after finally getting her cries to cease. “Go back to sleep, your body is still recovering.”
You look at him with pure adoration in your tired eyes. “People will think its improper.” You ignore his demand.
“Perhaps. People think a lot of things, sometimes it is best to ignore them.” He looks at the slightly pained look on your face as you shift in your position slightly. “What is it?”
You sigh. “Just, sometimes I get a sharp pain when I sit a certain way. It has gotten much better since the day I gave birth but sometimes it catches me off-guard.”
“All the more reason to go back to sleep, my love.” His smile warms you more than the fire ever could hope to. You lean towards your babe, pull the bundle of blankets back slightly and place a feather light kiss to her soft cheek. “She looks just like you.” His voice is barely above a whisper as he watches you stroke your thumb over the soft hairs on her head.
“Mmm, she has your eyes though.”
“It seems that is a fate my children cant escape.”
You chuckle before turning to him and placing a kiss on his lips. “Thank you. For everything.”
He shakes his head with a laugh. “And I thank you, for everything.”
You lean your forehead against his and join in his soft laughter, looking over your daughter who is now snoring quietly wrapped in the unbreakable safety of her fathers arms.
