One scene in Fellow Travelers that is so important to me is in the final episode when Jerome tells Marcus that he’s positive and that it’s his own fault, leading to Marcus reassuring him that he’s innocent. Marcus tells him to say it, to believe it.

During the HIV/AIDS epidemic a lot of people put the blame on the people contracting the virus, saying that they deserved it — which in turn a lot of people internalised.

Marcus stating “you’re innocent” is both meaningful in the context of the scene, while taking on a broader role as a sort of message to people who has or will contract HIV. You’re innocent, it’s not your fault.
