The world-wide phenomenon of professional cycling is followed by millions around the globe.  Anyone ever heard of Lance Armstrong?  What about the Tour De France?  In the area of competitive sports , this is a world that is highly competitive, time-intensive and very few make it to the pinnacle.  You might wonder why do it?  The simple answer is the passion for the sport and the determination and mind-set of a winner.

Starting with natural ability is a definite plus, but one must determine what amount of time and dedication they are willing to commit.  While the payoff can be great both financially and emotionally, the effort, time and sacrifice are even greater to achieve this level of competition. Most do not reach the pinnacle of greatness, but for the few who persevere the reward is worth it in the end!

The long and winding road

As I glide down the solitary road the vistas that flash by me are amazing, but I don’t notice.  I am here for a different reason and the racing thoughts in my head compete for my attention.  I start to wonder what will win this tug of war going on in my brain.  But as I focus on riding wherever the road takes me, I slowly start to relax and my mind clears for the first time all day.  Suddenly the day’s aggravations, worries and fears don’t seem so important, so big.  I wonder to myself why I even bothered to let it all get to me.  What seemed so important and confusing just a few hours ago comes into clear focus and I know things will be alright.

People ride bicycles for all different kinds of reasons.  Exercise.  Training.  Enjoying time with friends.  For some people, like me, it’s an exercise in clearing the mind to allow deep introspection and thought.  To me it’s another type of therapy, meditation, or a  possible alternative for medications that are prescribed all the time to treat depression and anxiety. Much like meditation cycling allows you to focus on breathing and movement, knocking down barriers helping you to focus on the problem at hand and move closer to some sort of resolution.

Try it out sometime at your own pace, with your own rules and just see what might improve for you.  You know what?  It sure can’t hurt and you might be surprised by what happens!

When I grow up.

Most of us have our own personal dreams and aspirations in our life whether we have accomplished them or not.  Some of us wanted to be famous or write a best selling novel or maybe even be the inventor of something that would change the world.  The point is dreams, we all have them.  Some go on to attain some accomplishment, but few are the special ones that are able to reach the pinnacle and achieve greatness.

One of the many areas that people excel is in sports. Professional cycling is one that is very competitive and takes much dedication, work and lifelong training.  This is true for the many types of competitive cycling such as road cycling, BMX and off road racing.

All of us would benefit from this kind of dedication. Take some time and think about what your passion is and consider going after your dreams.  It’s never too late.
