March 20th, 2011
Today is the solar sabbat of Ostara/Eostre (after the Saxon Goddess of fertility and rebirty)/the Vernal Equinox/Lady Day/Alban Eilir (Druidic/Welsh)/Mean Earraigh (Irish Gaelic)/ or the Ascent of the Goddess (in many cultures). In many parts of the world, such as ancient Persia and Rome, the Spring Equinox was considered the beginning of the new year.
I will post more Ostara related things after doing my basic blog post for the day.
Today is the 3rd Libra, the sun enters Aries at 7:21pm. The moon is waning in the third quarter. The color of the day is Amber, and the incense is Hyacinth. Today is also a good day for fishing.

March 18th, 2011
A good day for fishing today. Moon is in the second Virgo. Color of the day is rose and the incense is Mint. A good day for home and garden spells.
Today, the Celtic Tree Month of Alder begins.
Today in History:
Birthday of Edgar Cayce, psychi researcher, 1877.
A Garden Blessing
In many regions, the soil can now be worked in the garden. It's not too early to plant cool-weather vegetables- lettuce, onions, and spinach are good choices. While you're in the garden, this would be a good time to perform this simple blessing. Begin by crumbling some soil in your fingers and inhale its earthy scent. With deep reverence, begin hoeing and loosening the soil. Let your hoe serve as your want. Direct your energy down the handle of the hoe and into Mother Earth. Silently thank her for allowing you to plant and eventually harvest her bounty. Take a moment to connect with the natural world surrounding you at this time of year- the sound of birdsong, the budding trees, and early-blooming spring flowers. The Earth is alive, and you are part of this magic.

2nd Leo, moon void of course at 3:58pm and enters Virgo at 4:53pm (waxing in the Second Quarter). The color of the day is crimson, and the incense is Nutmeg.
Moon in Virgo: Favors accomplishment of details and commands from higher up. Focus on health, hygiene, and daily schedules.
Today in History:
Today is St. Patrick's Day.
Eleanor Shaw and Mary Phillips executed in England for bewitching a woman and her two children, 1705.
March 16th, 2011
2nd Leo. (Waxing Moon in the Second Quarter) Color of the day is yellow, and incense is Marjoram. Today is also St. Urho's Day (Finnish).
The Go to Hell Spell:
Today the Finnish celebrate Saint Urho, who when faced with a plague of locusts devouring Finland's wine-grape crop, simply told them. "Grasshopper, grasshopper, go to hell" and they left. Now, you probably don't have much of a grasshopper problem in March, in most of North America, but perhaps there is something else that is eating away at you. Be like Saint Urho and banish it to hell. Name your problem, writing it down on a piece of paper. Over a ceramic bowl, or the toilet, carefully light the paper on fire. As it burns say:
"Problem, problem, go to hell."
It is most effective if you substitute the exact words of your problem, as in:
"Self-doubt, self-doubt, go to hell."
As the paper burns, envision your problem in the flames of the metaphorical hell. See Hades gleefully take it in. Be free of devouring locusts.
March 15th, 2011
Today is a good day for planting (the last until the 22nd) and fishing. 2nd Gemini, moon void of course at 6:05 am and enters Leo at 3:33pm. The color of the day is gray, and the incense is Geranium.
Moon in Leo: Draws emphasis to the self, to central ideas and institutions, away from connections with others and emotional needs. People tend to be melodramatic.
Today is the (or would be) Japanese Phallus Festival.
Today in History:
Pete Pathfinder Davis becomes the first Wiccan priest elected as president of the Interfaith Council of Washington State, 1995.
On this date in 226 BCE, an earthquake brought the Colossus of Rhodes- one of the Seven Wonders- to its knees. But a more famous event likely accounts for the notoriety of the "Ides of March". Julius Caesar's rule, somewhere along the way, became tyrannical. In February of 44 BCE, Caesar has himself named Dictator Perpetuus- Dictator for Life. Brutus assassinated him on March 15. Caesar's murder was foretold by soothsayers and even by his wife, Calpurnia, who had a nightmare in which Caesar was being butchered like an animal. Caesar chose to ignore these portents and the rest, of course, is history.
Today is a good day for spells dealing with home and garden.
Prayer to Enhance Growth in Life:
In Celtic tradition, March was the traditional time for planting and sowing seeds. In Scotland the seed was sprinkled with clear, cold water for three days prior to planting, the person doing the ritual walking in a deosil direction. Then the seed was ritually consecrated and used in an ancient ritual to enhance the power of the sacred panting:
"I will go out to sow the seeds
In the name of those who
gave it growth
I will stand before the wind
And throw a handful in
the air.
Seed day, auspicious day
The dew will come down to
welcome
Every seed that lay asleep
Since the coming of the cold.
Every seed will take root in
the earth
As the rulers of the elements
desire
The grain will come forth
with the dew
It will inhale life from the
gentle wind."

March 13th, 2011
Today's a good day for planting. The moon is in the 2nd Gemini and enters Pisces at 10:29am. The moon is void of course at 9:10am. (Void of course means that it makes no more major aspects as it leaves the sign.)
The color of the day is gold, and the incense is Heliotrope.
The Moon in Cancer:Stimulates emotional rapport between people. Pinpoints need, supports growth, and nurturance. Tend to domestic concerns.
Sunday (Sun): Healing, spirituality, success, strength, and protection.
Also, don't forget today marks the beginning of Daylight Savings Time (at 2am).
Make sure you get out of bed on the right side this morning as it aligns your energy with the rising sun. Plant your feet on the ground with intention. Breathe through you nose. First, the right nostril for the Sun. Then the left nostril, for the Moon. Take three deep breathes, balancing the energy inside you. Offer it as a container for the cycling of the elements through your physical and subtle bodies. Imagine the rays of the Sun and Moon held in perfect unity at your third-eye center. Carry this awareness throughout the day and use it in times of stress and uneasiness.
Please, everyone please take the time to reblog this. It doesn’t take more then 5 seconds. What is happening in Japan right now and all over the world is very devastating. I’m praying for all of the victims and their families and those involved. #prayforjapan

Brooms and Marriage Rituals
To "marry over the broomstick" is an old term meaning that a couple was joined in a common-law union by jumping over a broomstick together.
Jumping forward and backward over a broomstick is a custom at many Gypsy (Roma) weddings.
Another age-old wedding custom is having the newlyweds enter their home by stepping over a broomstick.
Materials for Brooms
The earliest brooms were known as Besoms and were made by simply trying the broom plant around a stick.
Ash was later used for the handle, birch twigs for the brush (also called a spray), and willow for the binding. Sometimes hazel was used for the handle, oak twigs for the spray, and birch for the binding.
It's interesting to note that the materials used to make early brooms have magical significance. Ash is known for strength and as a symbol of the World Tree, birch is sacred to the Goddess and willow is associated with Moon magic and Hecate, goddess of magic. Hazel signifies wisdom and is used for wands, while oak symbolizes strength, fertility, and the God aspect.
