Verses
Main verse - The We Happy Few universe, an alternate 1964 where World War II went differently and the people of Arthur's English town turned to legally enforced drug abuse to cope.
V. Modern - The islands of Wellington Wells have been displaced in time since the 1960s. What seemed like a few years to them was decades in the outside world. Arthur escapes and finds the modern world waiting for him.
V. Space - Wellington Wells is a planet, rather than an island. It has always been rather isolated from Galactic culture, but in the past few decades they've stopped communicating with others off-planet entirely.
V. Dead by Daylight - Arthur was cornered and beaten by an angry mob one day, losing consciousness and waking up in the Mists as a Survivor.
[I am so willing to make up a specific verse for you and your muse if none of these work! Please just hit me up!]
About
Arthur was born in Wellington Wells, England on August 12, 1934. Like most people in Wellington Wells, his memories are spotty from heavy use of Joy. He grew up inseparable from his older brother, Percy. Percy was considered "dim" by the people around him and had trouble communicating with anyone except Arthur. Arthur sometimes resented the responsibility he held for his older brother, but he loved Percy dearly and always showed up for him. Their mother got sick when Arthur was young.
Much of Arthur's childhood was spent during World War II. Wartime was harsh enough already, but when the Germans invaded Wellington Wells with tanks (tanks Arthur finds out, as an adult, were papier-mache), the people agreed to give up their children as hostages. All children 12 and under were to be loaded up on a train and sent to Germany.
At 12, this included Arthur. Percy, at 14, was too old. He and Percy made a plan to smuggle Percy onto the train so they wouldn't be separated. Something happened that led to Arthur staying and Percy going on the train, which Arthur struggles to remember over the course of the game. Eventually he realizes that, as a child, Arthur lied and told them that Percy was him, so Percy would be sent in his place. Not wanting to put any more children on that train, the policeman chose to believe him.
Arthur was the only child to come back from the train. One other girl Arthur's age, Sally Boyle, didn't get taken--because her mother chose to poison her entire family instead, and Sally was the sole survivor. Arthur's family took her in and Arthur and Sally soon became inseparable. They found trouble together, mostly Arthur following Sally, blowing up mailboxes and picking locks. They dreamed of escape.
Arthur's mother, already sick, couldn't recover from the blow of losing Percy and died in 1948. Around the same time, Arthur's father coerced the teenage Sally into sex in his dead wife's bed. When Arthur discovered them and got angry, Sally ran off into the night. Arthur didn't see her again until he was an adult.
In 1951, a new drug called Joy was produced. By 1953, everyone in Wellington Wells began to take it to forget the events of the past, Arthur included. It became so common to take Joy that it was socially unacceptable not to. Those who chose not to take Joy were designated "Downers" and treated with suspicion and violence. Joy causes heavy memory loss and the people of Wellington Wells began to literally forget their past.
Arthur was at first a reporter for the local newspaper, the Hamlyn "O"Courant, but eventually went missing for two weeks (implied to be a Joy overdose) and lost his job. His former schoolteacher took him in as an editor at the Department of Archives, Printing and Recycling in City Hall. His job was to censor newspaper articles that may contain upsetting information about the past.
One October day in 1964, Arthur came across a newspaper article about himself and his brother winning a scrap-gathering contest during the War. He suddenly remembers Percy and decides to stop taking his Joy to find out what happened to him. He was soon discovered and chased out of the Village and into the Garden District: the run-down remnants of the old town where Downers are cast out to starve to death in misery.
Arthur is tasked with escaping the locked down island and surviving long enough to do it, slowly learning more about the many and growing problems in Wellington Wells that the people on Joy ignore, as well as remembering more of his own past in the process. After much struggle and hardship, he eventually manages to cross over the Bridge to the rest of the world, but not before seeing Wellington Wells and himself at their worst.
RULES
1. There will be dark and triggering topics on this blog, especially including violence and drug use. The We Happy Few universe is dark and my blog will be accordingly. I will try to tag, but put your own safety first.
2. This blog is 18+.
3. I do not use icons or fancy text. I have no issue with it if you do, just don't expect me to match.
4. This blog is very crossover and OC friendly! There's very little fandom for this game so I expect mainly crossovers. You don't need to be at all familiar with my canon to write with me. I have an about page to explain the basics and I'm happy to answer any questions you may have. I'd love to figure something out.
5. Feel free to message me to plot or anything else! A good way to get me to write with you is to send me something from my memes, which are always open.
6. I usually post from mobile and have trouble cutting responses properly; sometimes I have to cut everything I'm replying to because there's no other way to cut the post.
7. I reserve the right to drop a thread if I don't think it's working out, but that doesn't mean I don't want to write with you! We can always try again!
8. My activity tends to be. Weird. I don't make this a job so my speed in replies and amount of time I spend online will vary wildly. Sorry.
