Takeaway:
I was honestly really looking forward to these interviews to get help from an outsider, aside from my own physical therapists. These interviews were really lackluster and they didn’t seem like they were interested in being interviewed at all. It’s just that they agreed and seemed all excited and then I sent the interviews to them a long time before I actually needed the answers and they didn’t respond until the day I needed them. I told them to be as thorough as they could which is why I gave them so much time to actually do them and they answered some with one word answers. I honestly felt disrespected because I made sure that I gave them enough time so they could give me decent answers and they gave me nothing. They also attributed to the fact that I don’t really want to pursue a job as a physical therapist or a job anywhere in the kinesiology field. All they wanted was to become famous trainers and work in the Olympics and that’s the only reason they entered the field and now they’re sad people with sad lives.
@gaberjenn
The experiment.
I think that this is possibly the most work I’ve done on a project thus far. It took me a total of four days working on it nonstop. This was Schiller’s assignment and knowing her, this project was going to be a lot of hard work. Unlike any teacher, we were forced to start a month prior to the actual due date, which I think is good because knowing our senior class, we wouldn’t start until a couple days before the project was due. I was out sick, dying with bronchitis when she explained the official project so I missed the first day of working. I made things hard on myself by doing a meta-analysis because I had to do way more research than other students who just did a regular experiment. It required a lot of prior research and finding articles and studies and for the longest time I hadn’t found any. Don’t tell Schiller, but she barely helped me. I remember asking for her help on a certain part of my analysis and she shrugged her shoulders, and that made me kind of mad.
My experiment. Here’s a description of my project in a nutshell, or essentially my “abstract.” The incentive for this analysis developed because of the high rate of athletes being injured during their participation in sports. After injury, all an athlete wants to do is to heal as quickly and effectively as possible. This inquiry will analyze different modes of rehabilitation for three different injuries: ankle sprain, ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair. The experimental question is, how has technology affected kinesiology? This questions bring up the problem of which method of rehabilitation for injury is the most effective and quickest, hospital-based approaches or at home remedies.. This experiment will be done in the form of a meta-analysis, analyzing different experiments done on the three different injuries comparing and contrasting hospital treatment and home rehabilitation. The results were expected, hospital rehabilitation and homes rehabilitation both had the high success rates, but each rate varied upon injury. Hospital treatment saw a higher success rate and lower reinjury rate. This doesn’t dismiss the importance and accessibility of home rehabilitation, it just shows the healing properties of hospital-based rehabilitation. Home rehabilitation had a common tie among all three injuries, some patients were not healing properly, this number was a high as 30%. Hospital treatment saw a higher success rate among the three injuries, a lower reinjury rate, and a quicker rehabilitation time.
I turned the project in and I felt a weight off of my shoulders because I had been working so hard on it. We waited a month for our grade and if I’m being quite honest; I was disappointed. I received a 101/120 which translates to a 84%. My friends got higher grades and they bullshitted the entire thing which sucks. I guess I learned from this project that I don’t have to give my all to get good grades, don’t work as hard when not necessary.
$$$
The government and economic piece of this project was a seven minute minimum presentation. All my years at IPoly have been filled with many presentations, but only group ones; I haven’t done a solo “performance” in the longest time and the thought of doing one made me so nervous. I’ve done presentations longer than seven minutes, but this one felt different, I felt so unprepared and sporadic. Ironically this school is considered a “presentation-based” school and I should’ve been ready for a simple presentation like this.
I remember so clearly, my presentation barely made time, I made 7:34 and this was with a two minute video. I let out a sigh of relief that it was over, but I still worried about the grade that I would get. Anaya is the teacher that assigned us this presentation, which meant that he wouldn’t be grading as hard as Schiller or Edwards so I was at least confident that I would get at least a B.
My presentation was filled with the basics of kinesiology and the sports world. I talked about the different types of sports medicine out there, the logistics of everything and future career paths I would’ve like to pursue in the future. Careers like physical therapy and orthopedic surgeon interested me the most, so much of my research was preoccupied by thoughts of what could be. I looked into the education portion of the field as well as the environment I would have to work in. It was filled with majors in kinesiology and biology, while I would have to work in clinics and hospitals. I also noticed after working on kinesiology for an entire year that most of the people in the field have dreams of going to the Olympics; not as athletes, but as physical trainers and therapists which I found so intriguing. I wanted to delve deeper into that portion of the topic, I also found out that it’s crazy how much money is spent on national pride and sports.
This component was the first for our BaCON project and it was a precursor to what our senior project would be. After completion it made me feel quite nervous for the actual presentation, the 40 minute presentation, because I could barely complete a seven minute one. Presentations are exactly in a week and one day. Godspeed.
Where to Next?
Ache and pain started to creep up my legs, my knees felt as if they were going to explode from the amount of weight on them. My legs were in a constant cycle of up and down because I was using the leg extension machine at the physical therapist office. Sasha, the physical therapist assigned to my case, came over to me. She is a young Filipina, who looked as if she was fresh out of college. She came from the other side of the tan wall where she was talking to some of her coworkers. She crouched down in her maroon colored scrubs and began to adjust the weights on my machine. Surprisingly, I didn’t even ask her to adjust them for me she just did it. I think Sasha and I have built this patient to therapist connection where we have become more in sync; after all, this was my ninth session with her. It also could have been the fact that my face was an obvious giveaway, I don’t hide pain and discomfort that well. As she moved over to where I was, her coworkers also moved so that they could keep the conversation going. It seemed as though they were having an intense conversation, because the three of them all looked pretty upset. Sasha became flustered, and so did the other two. Their voices were becoming loud and shaky. When Sasha was done lowering the weight, she stayed next to my machine. She instructed me to do another set of twenty leg raises, which I agreed to. It’s not my fault, I didn’t intend on eavesdropping on their conversation, but they were surrounding me. Additionally, it’s so boring in the office especially on this day, there was only one other patient in the office aside from me. The office also doesn’t allow any phones into the room, so I couldn’t even listen to music. Suddenly I heard Sasha say very loudly,
“I hate doing all this.” This gave me absolutely no comfort, considering she was my assigned physical therapist. For a split second in time, I didn’t feel safe with her being my physical therapist. Her job is to make sure that my knee gets better and right now I don’t think she cares. A number of thoughts started running through my mind, but all I could focus on was what Sasha said. My doubts and reservations that I previously had about joining the Kinesiology field began creeping up on me again. It also didn’t make me feel any better when her coworkers were all agreeing with her. Their conversations continued and it wasn’t any different.
“This isn’t what I thought I would be doing with my life.”
“I wanted to work in the Olympics, not a place like this.”
“Just because I played sports growing up, it didn’t mean I had to be a cliche.”
In that moment I felt a sense of realization and relief, I didn’t have to go into Kinesiology and become what everyone else wanted me to be. Everybody in the physical therapy office knew that I was considering majoring in Kinesiology, to become either a physical therapist or an athletic trainer. Injuring my knee and meniscus might have been the best and worst thing that happened to me. Me eavesdropping on their conversation helped me to finally come to the conclusion that I had no longer wanted to pursue a job in the kinesiology field, nor did I have to.
Sports consumed my youth, I played everything from golf to basketball. My after school activities were never spent at home, from school I’d go straight to private lessons for golf or to basketball and volleyball practices. Being involved in all these activities took a toll on my body. I’ve had a lot of injuries, I’ve rolled, sprained and fractured both of my ankles. I’ve dislocated my right shoulder. I’ve pulled muscles from my hamstring to my groin. Most recently in my right knee, I’ve torn my meniscus and dislocated my kneecap. With all these injuries, the hospital and rehabilitation process have become something so familiar to me. I was being pushed to work in the kinesiology field literally by everyone, from my parents to people I didn’t even know. My future was set, I would find a job somewhere in the sports world and that was that. This probably would have been true for me if I didn’t injure my knee last year. The physical therapy sessions that came with that injury, showed me a different side to the job. I was comfortable being pushed to pursue a job in the kinesiology field because it was something I grew up around. But that day in physical therapy taught me that I don’t have to listen to anyone when it comes to my future, it’s my life not theirs.

This judge had exactly the right reaction to the shameful way nonviolent prisoners are treated in US jails
A woman was denied pants or tampons after being arrested for not completing a diversion course that was part of her sentencing from a shoplifting charge. But see how the judge reacts when she finds out that the prisoner’s humiliating treatment is apparently routine.
