Not a question but I stumbled upon your account while searching for Princess Diaries related-content and omg you share my obsession for these so if you want to talk about the books feel free to send me a DM ✨ P.S : You have the username of one of my fav characters in the books (Tina is so peak even though she is on her own planet aka Tinaland half the time)
TINAAAA! she’s so strange and obsessively romantic, she’s so me. nice to see you here!
I've been a long time, die hard fan of princess diaries and I have nobody to really talk to about it so I'm not sure if you answer asks but if you do I would love to know your opinion on this <3
I've seen a lot of reviews claim that Michael groomed Mia due to the age gap but if they basically grew up together I don't really see that as possibility. Like yes there is an age gap and I do think Meg Cabot should have kept it smaller but the books also came out in like early 2000s so I don't hold a lot against it?
Also apparently people view him as presurring Mia too much from book six onwards about the sex thing and all but really I never saw it like that? I always saw it as communication? Like sure he could have handled it better but really to me it's plot line leading upto book 8 and why they needed that break up to grow up and all.
Ik people can have their opinions and I'm not refuting their perspective. The reason I'm asking is because I always wonder wether it is something that is true to an extent and my rose tinted glasses and how I view the books as my favorite is just making me not see the 'problematic' parts of it-iykwim😭
I'm so sorry for making this long and any grammar errors that might be there, English is my second language. If this question bothers you pls don't block me just ignore it and you don't have to answer it (Since the series is pretty light hearted so I understand if someone would not want to look so deep into things) but I really really like your page (I am too shy to interact but I keep up with each post🥹) so it would be depressing if I got blocked. Again I'm sorry if this question is unwelcome, pls ignore it if I upset you <333
ugh i went overboard again sorry. see full answer below:
okay first, grooming is a serious allegation and requires a bit more premeditation which simply doesn't (AND CANNOT LOGISTICALLY) apply to MxM. so i'm not even going to give the time of day to that argument.
second, i'm rereading the series right now and i just got to book 5, and mia starts it when she's entering her sophomore year, which means we actually miss a decent chunk of the entire rest of the year & summer (not counting the novellas) about michael and mia's first year together. when mia does have the talk or whatever with michael, i feel like he's pretty reasonable. he attentively (CANONICALLY) listens to her and says that her worries actually don’t surprise him at all and he's totally ready to at least talk about it.
maybe when i read this series in middle/high school i would say yeah michael is being pushy when he asks when mia will be ready. but is he really? when he asks her when she'll be ready, she panics and says, "do i have to answer now? can i get a rain check" and michael (CANONICALLY) smiles sweetly and says of course.
i think where people might get a little jumbled is when he continues with "but just so you know, i'm not going to wait forever."
which is, funnily enough, one of my favorite lines because:
sorry, but he's not wrong. he's 18 years old and brimming with hormones and at this point has already known what sex feels like so ?? is it so irrational that he wants to actually do it with someone he loves this time??
mia says that he clearly says it "jokingly" and i just don't think we should take mia's characterization of...anyone seriously.
michael later on backtracks on this in book 10 and admits he WILL wait so the development is clear.
i wanna touch on the age gap though. while it's a relief that michael and mia don't DO anything until she's 18, i agree with you that we need to take the era into consideration. this series was published in the early 2000s!! i simply don't think we can use today's standards as a jumping off point for michael and mia. i have never thought weird about it because i've read meg cabot's other books and its so evident that she doesn't care much about the age gaps and doesn't create them so apart for the sake of making a statement. suze and jesse's age gap in the mediator series is 4 years where suze is 16 and jesse 20 (though older if you count him being dead for over a hundred years lol). this to me is such a non issue because michael clearly is not abusive, nor manipulative, and, like you said, has grown up with mia!!!
i think michael not handling the conversation past the 5th book well is part of his characterization. michael is known for being a little too patient with mia, while being more impatient with others. and he's a BOY who doesn't see hi girlfriend all the time because he doesn't go to school with her anymore AND she has genovian duties. this dude is sexually (and emotionally due to his parents' attempt at divorcing) repressed! and his girlfriend is really stupid sometimes! i get it dude.
and despite all his "badgering" and asking when mia will be ready, lo and behold, he DOES wait. he waits and waits and waits, and it works out in the end because michael learns patience and mia gains maybe a handful of more braincells.
great question anon, when i am home i will answer. to add to that just briefly, princess diaries haters will be even more shocked to hear about the age gap between jesse and suze in the mediator series
guys i don’t think it was the cards that made michael realize mia loves him. i think it was the fact that she STARED AT HIS LIPS WHILE HE WAS TALKING ABOUT THE DENTIST AND NOTHING BROKE HER OUT OF HER STUPOR UNTIL KENNY WALKED BY
