the reality of it is early on is ofc the fact that isayama couldnt draw for shit but if u wanna explain it away that badly it is chronic stress (this is objectively the case when it comes to post ts and when isayama can actually draw and was comfortable with his design. reiner is supposed to be very depressed and lost like 12 kg)

this is actually so funny considering that one of the main thematic linchpins of the marley arc and post ts is that reiner was a child soldier and the victim monster of the fascist apartheid and colonial empire that uses oppressed children like war cattle because of the reality of titan warfare and the historical exploitation of subjects of ymir as weapons for war driven by resource extraction and geopolitical dominance and the sole reason he doesnt blow his own brains out is the responsibility that he feels for the next generation of children destined to share his fate and the “we must get the children out of this forest, at least” theme

when it comes to the thematic core of attack on titan, and how it frames its tragedy as well as the brutal cycles of its history, i wish people understood what it was attempting to say, at least certainly what i got out of it… across history, the reflexive answer to oppression has not been solidarity but consolidating the ingroup, like constructing a nationalist politics that promises never to suffer again, even if that means replicating the same violence toward another group(s). this pattern is what is embedded in global capitalism, which mediates all political action through “nation-forms.” solidarity thus becomes a deliberate political labor, one that actively resists nationalism when the system prefers fragmentation. this is the criticism that was levied against the yeagerists (as well as the cycle at large when it comes to marley & eldia.) it was intended as a cautionary tale, and the very last scene with the boy and the tree is not something that i read as pessimistic, misanthropic, and fatalistic. eren’s very defeat by the alliance and the entire final arc was a thesis here.
