Euonia - Beautiful Thinking
Eunoia from Lisa Park on Vimeo.
ArtistĀ Lisa Parkās performance titled Euonia ā a Greek word that can be translated as ābeautiful thinkingā. Ā The title is apt as Parkās thoughtās are central the beauty of her performance. Ā She makes use of an EEG headset which monitors various brainwaves and eye movement. Ā The resulting information is translated into sound directed to one of five speakers. Ā A shallow pan of water sits on each speaker, vibrating and shimmering with each of Parkās various thoughts. Ā Park associated each of the five speakers with a different emotion and would recall various memories of people important to her in order to manipulate the speakers. Ā She had hoped to develop the ability, through practice, to end her performance in silence but could not ā an outcome perhaps more interesting than she had intended. Ā It may be the brain is much more difficult to quiet than it seems. Ā Be sure to check out the video to see Lisa Parkās brain in action.Ā

Light painting or light illustration has been a trending technique of late. Ā Darren Pearsonās skeletal pieces, though, are much more complex than most of the work we often seem to come across. Ā While the camera shutter is open Pearson moves a light much like a brush which leaves its trail on the resulting photograph. Ā The image appears to take up physical space and leave a haunting glow on its surroundings. Ā Each piece also interacts with the surrounding scene, the California landscape which figuresĀ largelyĀ in much of Pearsonās work.

John ChaeāsĀ digital illustrations are suffused with bright colors, provocative images, and pop culture references. These digital worlds are odd and labyrinthine and reflect a pastiche of influences. While strangely captivating, his use of patterns and repetition is quite hypnotic. His work feels like a hybrid of Charles Burnsā and early mimetic internet styles. From his website:
ģė ķģøģ! My name isĀ John (ķ¬ķ) ChaeĀ and I was born in the year of the dragon (1988), but Iām technically a rabbit. MyĀ birthday jamĀ is TiffanyāsĀ Couldāve BeenĀ and my blood type is B, but Iām not sure whether I am B+ or B-⦠I was born in Boulder, Colorado but I grew up in Seoul, Korea. I graduated with a BFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art. I currently reside in Jacksonville, FL.
