One of the things that gets me about Priest and Blackwing in general is that he was let to do what he did. He was there for the bulk (if not all?) of the program. Sure there was obviously a final straw situation but it had to get very bad before that.

Riggins did not give a fuck and his head was so far up his own ass about getting the projects being the ultimate good and building up his wunderkind Dirk that he let everything else go.

Bart is the only one not terrified of him for obvious reasons but he was also smart enough to know how to handle her. Vogel starts screaming and Dirk shuts down, automatically writing his friends off as dead. Not 'they're going to capture you, too' a la Friedkin run Blackwing but dead.

Him shooting people and breaking fingers and knocking out Farrah without even breaking a sweat must be incredibly tame compared to whatever trauma those reactions stemmed from and Blackwing just said yeah, cost of doing business.

I’m still not over the fact that Bart is being told to kill Ken.

Because people can make shitty decisions and still be good people. Todd bankrupted his parents after lying to everyone for years and Bart never felt like killing him. Ditto for Dirk “it’s not stealing if it’s something I really want” Gently. Apparently she’s never even tried to kill Priest, someone who canonically beheaded a child. If she killed everyone who’d ever done something dumb or misguided or cruel, she’d be killing literally everyone she comes into contact with.

Which means that the stream of creation has looked at Ken (ambitious Ken who just wants to understand things) and has decided that the universe is safer without him in it.

That’s fucking chilling.

Also sorry to pull aside the narrative curtain here, but sometimes it’s good to remember that we’re watching a piece of fiction and “the stream of creation” refers to the decisions of a group of screenwriters, not the actual will of the universe. Ken’s character did such a dramatic flip in the show and yet some people are much quicker to accept him as a villain than they were with Friedkin, who was portrayed from the start as self-absorbed and careless of the life and safety of others. A lot of truly shitty people in this show have been given redemption arcs, and I’m still boggling at their apparent decision to make sure we knew Ken was beyond redemption. Even if they plan to reverse it next season, it’s a pretty weird move.

No, I’m with you completely here. I’m still appalled that Friedkin was given a redemption arc of sorts while Ken was completely thrown under the bus for the sake of drama (I adore morally grey, ethically ambiguous characters but his backflip made no sense).

What’s confusing me about this decision in-universe is that Bart has had access to so many other Blackwing people that she’s never felt the urge to kill. Riggins, Friedkin and Priest are all still alive and kicking. Blackwing was never a threat until Ken took over. It really makes me question whether Ken is being singled out by the stream of creation as a threat to the Blackwing subjects (the universe’s chosen tools) or a threat to the universe more broadly.

And I feel like this is doubly true if the fabric of reality is breaking down and the universe is gathering all of its resources (including Amanda and Friedkin, apparently). But I love my ambitious and manipulative Slytherin babe to pieces and I literally screamed at the screen when he called Dirk “Svlad” because that was not necessary in the slightest.

Bringing this back because the more I think about it, the more I feel like Ken telling Mr. Priest “Project Icarus is the priority” was the turning point for the Stream of Creation? Until then, Blackwing was trying to understand the universe’s glitches but they had no real power or direction under Riggins or Friedkin. Bart might’ve disliked both of them, but she never stabbed either of them with a pen or brained them with a security camera because the Stream of Creation knew that it could survive whatever they threw down.

The Stream of Creation doesn’t care about Dirk Gently, or even Svlad Cjelli. But Ken finally articulates his approach to Project Icarus (one of the most powerful tools out there) and the Stream of Creation is suddenly hell-bent on fucking yeeting Bart into position to take him down.

Throwing in my useless two pennies:

I think Bart was supposed to kill Ken when they met in the desert.

It’s established in the IDW canon that Bart wasn’t told to kill Dirk by the universe, but by the Men of the Machine. Bart only stops trying to kill Ken when she learns that he isn’t Dirk Gently.

But Bart was still lead by the universe to the desert to kill Red. Who’s to say she wasn’t supposed to kill Ken as well?

It’s commonly accepted that Ken is the one that was supposed to fix the time machine, but who’s to say that’s true? Who’s to say it wasn’t supposed to be someone else, and when Bart didn’t kill Ken, the universe just rolled with it for a bit?

Bart kills everyone she meets. I just think that after the events of S2, the universe had to make it explicit to her that Ken had to die.

Disregarding the fact that DGHDA is a show with writers, in-universe I don’t think that the ‘stream of creation’ or the universe is omniscient or omnipotent, or else it wouldn’t have any use for the tools of the universe. So it just replanned to account for a temporary Ken, which got out of hand.

Supporting this is the almost complete irrelevance of Bart in S1 to the case. Bart contributes three things- killing Red, killing two other MoM in the Spring mansion, and delivering Ken. The universe simply accommodated Bart into the long plan.

tl;dr: The reason Ken flips in S2 was because he was supposed to die in S1.

the ending of season one of dirk gently like. Todd came back to him to apologize and make sure dirk was okay. Then he gave dirk his band shirt and they end up in a little diner with their best friend laughing and happy side by side. And end up basically planning the rest of their lives together and they expected me not to go insane.

yknow what i absolutely love about dghda? how socially unaware all the former blackwing subjects are. like these guys have no clue what to do in normal society and that absolutely makes sense

dirk is the most well adjusted out of all of the ones we know of and even he climbs into this random guy's apartment through the window, immediately calls him his assistant and then declares that he lives there now. he's clueless. he wants friends but he doesn't know how to talk to people, even after 16 years lived in freedom

and then there's bart and the rowdy 3

bart doesn't know how radios and tvs work, nor what hotels are. all she's known her whole life is blackwing labs and the fact that she's supposed to kill people. so that's what she does. she doesn't know how to talk to people, she just goes with the flow

and of course the rowdy 3, the absolute icons. unlike dirk, who wants to be a part of society, and bart, who really doesn't care, they actively reject social norms. they saw punk culture and ran with it. they're rude, violent and, well, rowdy. and they like that. but they're also stupid in the way that you would be if you grew up in a lab with (probably) next to no real education. none of them have any functioning braincells or social grace and that works for them

i didn't talk about mona or francis/moloch bc we don't really have a real frame of reference for either of them. mona is an inanimate object 99% of the time and francis has been in a coma for several decades
