So, love, I'm on a Sixth Doctor kick lately and I'm semi new to Classic who and new to audio dramas I only downloaded them yesterday and I need to ask a very very important question.Where did Six's love for cats come from?
Oh I’m so glad!! Six is my favourite Doctor (if this was not obvious haha) and I’m super glad you’re getting into Classic Who!! Welcome!
I have to admit that I’m not entirely caught up on Sixth Doctor Lore but I can tell you that it’s almost entirely due to the fact that he wears a cat brooch on his left lapel. (This is the only part of the costume that Colin Baker actually had any say in, so there’s that!) In every serial/story he’s in, it’s a different one, and sometimes he’ll touch it for good luck in a sort of nervous way. The cat on the brooch was even supposed to change expressions with the Doctor originally but that idea was dropped except for appearing in, like, one comic I believe? Anyway these cat brooches, understandably, caused the assumption that the Sixth Doctor liked cats, and this is supported in at least one audio (pretty sure it’s The Condemned) when the companion he’s with, Charley, observes that he has a way with cats and then he says something along the lines of them having a way with him. So! Through all this, it became a sort of canon that Six has a love of cats.
I have a love of cats as well and through a mix of the Sixth Doctor’s personality never being fully fleshed out in the show and the hyperbolic nature of the imagines on my blog, an obsession with cats was born. I hope this answered your question adequately!! :)
