“My Lady, I don’t think…” Eoin hesitates when Clara steps closer to him, emerald gaze flickering to the gentle caress of her hands on his. So small, those hands. He could remember when she was just a child, holding that little hand of hers to keep her safe. Somehow, this seemed more…intimate. Careful. Clara was his Queen now, and though that meant his life was pledged to her, he felt it did not quite entail such a moment as this one.
The advisor shifts slightly, lifting his eyes to meet hers as golden brown shimmered up at the man, impenetrable. Words of her father at Clara’s lips made his head bow, eyes shifting uncertainly to the floor. She could not know what her father’s death had brought him–and there he would be, standing at the end of it all to promise a new beginning, a new age. There was no pause for the job Eoin had. Lead, teach, advise. Every day until perhaps one sun would come when they would no longer ask him questions. When they would no longer seek his friendship only for such a frail endeavor to be snuffed out and pushed onto the next.
He realizes then why Clara’s fingers brushed his, why she stood before him. Scared. When he looks at Clara now, the emerald of his eyes pierces the visage of a Queen, seeing that little girl, those same sad eyes when Eoin was left to pull her from her mother’s bed.
The softest squeeze of his fingers against her palms, and Eoin speaks, careful and quiet. “Clara,” he feels this means more, and so long as it was just them, he could offer this intimacy. He helped raise her, and now she was scared. “I will never let that happen. I would advise you on nothing which would bring you dishonor.”
The feeling of his hands touching hers, squeezing lightly, gently over his fingers, made a little rush through Clara. It was one thing for her to initiate contact, but when the advisor responded, she felt a little thrill. A thrill that was not appropriate, certainly not for a Queen and advisor. His hands were so careful as if she might shatter. But, when he spoke her name, her first name, she may well have melted. He hadn’t called her by her name in so long; it was always polite titles, impersonal and cold. It was him saying her name that made her realize how numb she felt.
He knew her better than she knew herself, knowing how to comfort her, and make her feel alright again. Sometimes, on the throne, Clara could start to feel as if she was losing herself, losing her humanity. Like she was becoming a statute, only a monument to what a Queen should be: cold, smooth, and made of stone. It was Eoin that made her feel human again, reminding her that she was someone.
Her hands held his even tighter, and she fought the impulse to lean into him, to close her eyes and lay her head on his chest. Now that she was Queen, there were lines between them. Lines that they should never cross. They stood like that for a while, staring at each other In a strange way, it comforted Clara to stand in silence, not having to say anything, just taking joy in each other's company.
It was the knock on the door that made her suddenly dart away from him, moving straight to the window instead as she spoke: "Enter." to the secretary that entered the room soon after, speaking in a small voice about a council meeting. Clara fought back a sigh. It had only been a few weeks, and she already despised the council. Every meeting with them had been an uphill battle. She turned, looking at the secretary. "I will be on my way shortly." Her eyes met Eoin's as the man hurried out of the room. "If I wasn't in need of council, I'd abandon it." She said in a low growl.

“You are the leader of our society, your Highness,” Eoin comments quietly, only slightly frustrated with miss Clara’s devotion. She was a perfect ruler to her people–kind, brave. She would sacrifice everything for them, just as he was under vow to sacrifice everything for her. He would not choose better himself if he was able. Clara’s father before her had been just as dignified–ready to make the tough decisions with Eoin at his side. His King knew he was never alone in the conflicts he faced–Eoin would always know his troubles, fears and desires. Somehow the advisor would have to do the same for his daughter, whom he watched grow into the woman she was today. He vouched for her when it came tie to pass the crown as her father wished, a ferocity in him he was unaware existed when there came the question of her ability. “With respect, your Grace, without you, your people will have far more to worry about.”
Eoin drops his gaze, the emeralds shadowed at her words. “Yes,” he murmurs quietly. The man knows this is the way of politics–marriage ensures allies and stability for the future. However, he knew it was only an option to the ouncil now because their leader was a woman. Before, it may have been very normal for the King to have married off his only daughter, but he had never agreed to such terms, nor would he ever have, Eoin knew. Clara Oswald was not a pawn, especially now.
His eyes flicker up at her subtle protest, the faintest twitch at the corner of his mouth. “I believe your father would have made the same decision,” he affirms. “I will back you at any decision, my lady.”
A soft smile came across her face at his words of loyalty and admiration. She never truly understood what Eoin saw in her, how he seemed to have so much faith in her. Especially now, when all she felt like was a frightened little girl who had lost her father, definitely not a powerful Queen, able to move worlds with only words and will. Clara moved to Eoin, having the courage to actually touch his hands, holding them gently. “I never got the chance to thank you.” She murmured softly, looking at his hands first, then up at him. “For your service. Especially now. “
Her eyes met his, staring into his green-blue eyes, flecked with hazel. They were undefinable, just like the man standing in front of her. “I know that my father considered you a true friend, and I thank you for your strength, even though you must be grieving too.” In fact, if she was completely honest, Eoin knew her father infinitely better than his own daughter did. Goodness knows that he spent more time with his advisors than Clara. The only time Clara really saw her father was at the occasional state dinner, or, when he died, she spent most of her time at his side, listening to his advice.
Now, her father was gone, and Clara couldn’t push away the overwhelming feeling of betrayal. Her father was supposed to prepare her for this, to make her worthy enough to lead her people, to protect them, and yet she felt like she knew nothing. All she did know was that she had to stay on the throne, not give power to the council, that was full of corruption and greed, but how? With all the cards against her, how could she, at such a young age, manage to lead a nation better than eleven men, more experienced, and more eager to lead?
“I need you to tell me how to handle this, Eoin. I know you’ll support me in any decision, but what if my choices are wrong?”

Eoin regards his Queen carefully, his stance formal and guarded with hands crossed behind his back and feet spread. After the death of her father–his King, his friend–Eoin knew she was under duress. Hard times were falling all at once, as they always would, and the country were now turning their eyes to their youngest leader in centuries. It was his job to guide her.
Since being placed as advisor under Clara’s father, Eoin became known as one to make seemingly ludicrous decisions. Always talk it through, always meet unarmed, always offer forgiveness. Learn this trade or that custom or invite this dictator or another. Many deemed it cowardice. Eoin knew it as peace. War would never be correct, and with their newest liege, it was only even more unlikely to be condoned. Eoin swore an oath under Clara’s father, and he swore the same under her. There was yet one other that lingered at the back of the advisor’s mind, causing his fingers to twitch idly at the fabric of his jacket–a promise he made only months ago to his King as his final breaths lingered into single digits: to keep his daughter safe, whatever the cost.
“Of course, my Queen,” he replies, bowing his head slightly in response, though his eyes never left hers–deep brown flecked with gold to fit the crown which weighed so heavily on her head. “I would not be doing my job otherwise. I merely wished to express that you are precious to this country. Your safety is paramount.”
Even if Clara had grown up in this castle, she never was used to the title ‘Queen.’ She had grown up to be a strong young woman, intent on her people, just like her father had believed she would. He probably would have wished she would have married by now, but honestly, thoughts of happy proceedings and marriage just seemed out of context, considering the danger her kingdom was facing.
“My safety shouldn’t be paramount, it is the people of my country that I have concern for.” Not just if they were safe, but if they were going to fully accept Clara as the monarch for their country. Yes, she was born into it, but Clara was still a woman, and misogyny was a normality in this world. She still remembered the look on the council’s face when she insisted she would keep the throne, instead of allowing the council to take control. All but Eoin had stared at her doubtfully, believing a woman incapable of such responsibility. From that moment, Clara knew that Eoin would be her trusted advisor, the one man she could confide in and trust fully.
“Mr. Smyth. The council, as you well know, has insisted that I marry in order to end this threat. However, I don’t know if I find that to be an adequate solution, I think it is a last resort.” She paused, looking at him, being sure to study his response to her next words. “I wish to meet our adversary for peace meetings, and if we do not prevail in that respect, I will consider marriage.”

Clara glared, crossed her arms, and stood determined, staring at the Doctor.
❝Want is relative, Doctor. You’ll accept my help because you need it, and that’s why I’m here. I’m not leaving anytime soon.❞
He was difficult, but Clara was insistent on making sure they got through this together, just like they always had. They would figure something out, usually last minute, and save the day.
❝Just.. tell me what you need.❞

In truth, Clara didn’t know how to answer the question. After all, traveling with him was, in a way, taking her own life into her own hands, and ever since Trenzalore, he had been scattered. Scattered was a kind way to put it. He hardly remembered her, or much of anything involving his true identity, and it was coming back to him in chunks.
Clara herself remembered when she was in a similar state. When the Doctor carried her out of Trenzalore, after she had jumped into his timeline, it took a while to find her own true identity, who she really was. She just had to be patient. At least, that was what she kept telling herself.
❝I’m fine. Don’t worry about me.❞
“Next time, I’ll kill you.”
She stared at him wordlessly, thinking about how the man in front of her was not the man she knew, not the Doctor she jumped into a timeline for, not the Doctor she ran with. Who was this cold creature in front of her, with eyes staring at her, old eyes, that she used to know, but now, possessive anger replaced the once friendly appreciation she had grown to love.
Her throat was frozen, like if she had tried to speak, she would have no voice to make sound. Clara was a strong woman, she had been through quite a lot, and was able to speak her mind even to the most terrifying of enemies, but this, this was something entirely new. Yet, a spark of bravery appeared, and let her stand a little straighter, before mirroring the Doctor’s glare, speaking determinedly.
❝No, you won’t. Or you would have killed me a long time ago.❞

She sighs lightly, looking out the window at the garden, swallowing. How could such peace exist, when only a little way away, her people were in serious danger? Her doubt rose inside her once more, thinking to herself how she was not ready for this crown. It had only been a few month since she took over the throne, and already her country was under the threat of war.
The man standing in front of her, her most peculiar advisor, who she had known for many years now. Eoin Smyth, who had proved himself over and over again with strange, but accurate advice, helping her father lead the kingdom into a golden age. Yet, the promise of war and the death of his king seemed to have affected him, in a way she didn’t recognize. He seemed to be more passionate, more worried about her safety, which Clara was used to, but not to this degree. Yet, she appreciated his display of feelings. It was refreshing.

This is why she traveled with the Doctor, the overwhelming certainty that it would always be different, that there was never an ending to their adventures. All Clara could expect when she entered the blue box, was the adrenaline rush and the running. The insane amount of running. Clara looked at him expectantly as they stood at the console, arching an eyebrow.
