this is tulsa, 1967. and theres just fuck all to be learned about gender and transness, so to be clear: darry does not consider himself to be trans. no one knows that's a thing for basically another two years. no one really knows what going on, that includes Darry.
darry's transition was less of a transition and more of a... collection of traits that led up to high school
he started wearing boys clothes, mostly because he wanted to help his dad on roofing sites, the little osha violation, and because frills and pink are not exactly greaser
his parents called him dar anyways, so going by dar or darry was easy.
in the summer he was 13, he cut all his hair clean off. his parents were a little mortified, but took it in stride, albeit with some mild confusion. they assumed he'd just grow it back, didn't say anything when it stayed short
when people assumed he was a boy, he didn't correct them. his brothers noticed, and followed suit. they considered it a kind of inside joke, i guess, and it spread to the gang.
suddenly, two-bit's siblings knew darry as the third curtis brother
the summer he was 14, going to high school, Dallas appeared. Being from the streets of new york, he's the only person who actually has a concept of transness
He asks if Darry is short for Darrel, like his father. Darry says yes.
Later that day, he offers to take the high school registration paperwork out of his mother's hands. Darrel Shaynne Curtis Jr. is what he writes as his name.
Suddenly, all his teachers and classmates call him Darry, ask him if he's new in town. If he's trying out for any sports. He wasn't planning on it, of course, but he knows he's got a decent arm from throwing a football around with Daddy. Football is a no-go, but he makes the cut for centerfielder, and he's shortstop by sophomore spring. His parents go to every game.
They're calling him head boy. Prom king.
There's a scout at one of his games, encourages him to apply for a scholarship at University of Oklahoma. The name thing poses an issue--this isn't some podunk high school in the Tulsa suburbs that won't look twice.
They don't have the money anyway, but UO lets him defer a couple semesters. His dad's so proud. First Curtis to go to college. First Curtis man to graduate high school.

this au goes about the same as canon but he did baseball and technically committed fraud on a bunch of paperwork while going stealth in high school. he's a lot angrier because he feels like he's got something to prove and he's more resentful of taking care of his brothers and being forced back into a feminine caretaker role.
design fun facts! the flannel is his dad's and the rings on his right hand are his parents wedding bands. the ring on the necklace is paul's, and they had a Thing before he transitioned. and maybe after.
no one in tulsa has any idea what being trans is including darry. his brothers are just like "yeah thats darry hes our brother who used to be our sister but we dont talk about that"
This is absolutely GORGEOUS AND BEAUTIFUL!! You got their dynamic down flawlessly in just one drawing, I could go on and on about everything about it ohb my gosh kicking my feet !!!! Screaming anf jumping up and down!!!! The lighting is so stunning and establishes the atmosphere perfectly! I love the way Paul completely surrounds Darry, even holding up the cross necklace as he caresses his face!! And SMEARS HIS BLOOD!! AGHHH!!! Also Darryās expression is just absolutely breathtaking, the nervous anticipation as he looks down at the Madras shirt, as if heās signing his soul away by just holding onto it. Ugh, so good. I can totally imagine this moment being the first time Darry puts on the Madras shirt, finally caving after Paulās incessant taunting.
