       THIS TIME LAST YEAR was probably the happiest he had ever been, in paris with addie, a fancy dinner and a night walk to the effiel tower….it paled in comparison to now. now he was bitter, that blankness in his stare obvious as he stopped into the market to grab some gatorade and snacks for later on tonight and to aid the pounding he knew would be in his head as he came down from the night he was planning on having. he didn’t even realize as he reached for the candy that imogen was right there, too bust in his own head as dax snapped out of it when he heard her voice, “oh?” he asked, figuring this was a far more welcomed way to occupy his time than trapped in his own little pity party, “you gonna eat that all by yourself tonight? what a shame…a beautiful girl such as yourself shouldn’t be spending tonight all alone.” dax toyed, and he only did this to mess with her, even though in the back of his mind he knew he shouldn’t. it was addie’s sister, someone who knew him, who knew how he used to be, and yet here he was with that devious smirk on his face as he looked her over.

    just  when  she  thought  this  day  couldn’t  get  any  worse,  it  does.  dealing  with  addie’s  sleazy  ex  wasn’t  on  her  terrible  valentine’s  day  bingo  card,  but  if  she’s  hit  rock  bottom,  it  only  makes  sense  that  a  higher  power  is  pulling  the  strings  to  make  her  misery  all  the  much  more  miserable  (  whichever  of  the  gods  is  pulling  the  strings  right  now,  so  not  funny,  okay  ??  ).  “  actually,  these  are  for  a  girl’s  night  with  addie,  ”  she  lies  through  her  teeth,  just  waiting  for  the  mention  of  her  name  to  sting  him,  “  and  a  creep  like  you  should  really  be  scurrying  away  right  now,  don’t  you  think  ?  ”  she  never  thought  the  son  of  dionysus  was  good  enough  for  her  sister  and  his  behavior  since  the  breakup  has  only  furthered  that  belief.  “  i’ll  be  sure  to  tell  her  you  send  your  regards.  ”

He hadn’t expected her to agree and it shows on his face. In an attempt to hide it he turns back into the fridge, taking longer than required to get the food Noor had left for him before turning back to Imogen with as neutral an expression as he could muster. “Well it’s food that Noor made so you don’t have to worry about trying to stomach anything I’ve touched.” He says, this time his joke delivered with some actual lightness. He moves to start preparing things for reheating as he listens. 

“You must know that this is like my last resort - that if you were literally anyone else this wouldn’t be happening right?” Not the best foot to start on but it was the truth and Vincent was well aware that she would see through any of his bullshit in an instant. She knew him too well. He wanted things to go back to normal, to have her stop ignoring him but now that she was waiting to hear him talk Vincent’s throat was drying up. A man never lost for words he wasn’t sure what to do now. “I’m sorry..” His voice is back to being quiet but he corrects himself, saying sorry again. “I know that what I said was hurtful… That I dug my heels in on a point that was unnecessary and in the process I didn’t care if what I was saying actually had any repercussions… I didn’t put any thought into how I was making you feel with them.” Apologises, sincere ones at least, were not his strength and he could feel himself stumbling already so turned back to the food as he let the first attempt get a reaction.

       “  i  figured  as  much,  ”  she  replies,  eyeing  the  food  he  takes  out  with  relief  (  neither  of  them  were  quite  gifted  in  the  kitchen  . . . yet  another  similarity  between  the  pair  ),  “  but  if  this  is  your  dinner,  i’m  not  just  going  to  take  it  from  you.  i  think  i  have  half  of  my  lunch  left  from  yesterday  in  the  fridge.  i  can  always  just  have  that.  ”  ever  the  eldest  sister,  always  looking  out  for  the  rest  of  the  brood  ahead  of  herself.  “  i’ll  be  fine.  you  eat,  i’ll  just  listen.  ”

       “  i  know,  ”  she  answers,  her  tone  a  bit  more  gentle  than  it’s  been  in  recent  weeks,  her  guard  let  down  as  he  too  drops  his  defenses,  “  but  maybe  that’s  part  of  the  problem.  maybe  an  actual  apology  shouldn’t  be  your  last  resort.  i  know  you’re  proud,  hell  . . .  i  am  too.  but  i’m  working  on  not  being  so  . . .  ”  she  trails  off,  unsure  of  the  right  word  to  use,  instead  letting  the  thought  hang  in  the  air,  “  i  don’t  know.  but  you  get  what  i’m  saying,  right  ?  ”  and  finally,  she  hears  the  words  she’d  been  waiting  weeks  for,  the  words  that  make  her  feel  guilty  for  waiting  this  out  for  so  long,  for  she  knows  how  hard  this  is  for  him.  but  this  is  something  she  needed  to  hear  from  him  if  she  were  to  move  past  this.  “  you  get  why  it  hurt,  right  ?  ”  she  wonders  aloud,  “  because  you  might  as  well  have  been  talking  about  yourself  with  what   you  said  that  day  and  not  me.  we’re  too  similar,  sometimes,  you  and  i.  i  know  you  like  i  know  myself  and  i  could  tell  you  were  projecting.  so  while  i’m  grateful  for  your  apology  and  of  course  i  accept,  i  think  you  owe  yourself  an  apology  too,  because  it  wasn’t  just  me  you  were  cutting  down  with  those  words.  ”

THE SIGNATURE YELLOW SWEATER IS a dead giveaway to levi’s presence. perched behind the front counter on a stool, he’s sifting through various albums that managed to make it’s way up to him. the who plays on through the speakers placed strategically throughout the store, and it’s clear that he’s the one who picked the current album. he’s reading the back of some george michael album ( not necessarily his thing, but it sure as hell beats doing his actual job of reorganizing the 80′s synth section ), when the door bell chimes out. “ heya, welcome to fireside records, need help finding anything ?? ” levi is quick to give his usual spiel before even looking at the potential customer. he’s in too deep reading the ‘special thanks’ section of the album. 

        she’s  made  habit  of  dropping  into  fireside  as  of  late,  no  longer  having  someone  to  pick  her  up  special  album  picks  for  a  record  player  she  initially  acquired  just  to  impress  that  certain  someone  that  she  ended  up  growing  to  love.  her  collection  is  still  small,  but  it’s  growing,  and  while  she  might  not  have  the  most  astute  taste  in  music,  she  knows  what  she  likes  and  what  she’s  searching  for.  “  yes,  actually,  ”  she  answers,  figuring  it’d  be  easier  to  have  levi  point  her  in  the  right  direction  than  to  search  on  her  own,  “  i’m  looking  for  whitney  houston,  self  titled.  please  tell  me  you  guys  have  a  copy.  her  first  one  . . .  full  name.  not  just  whitney.  but,  hey,  i’ll  take  that  too  if  you  have  it.  ”

     with  the  amount  of  chocolate  and  the  two  bottles  of  wine  she  balances  in  her  arms,  it  looks  as  if  imogen  is  preparing  for  one  very  romantic  night  in,  but  it  couldn’t  be  further  from  the truth.  she’s  made  the  executive  decision  to  cancel  study  group  for  the  evening  and  take  her  work  home  with  her  instead,  planning  on  editing  second  years’  journal  articles  with  her  favorite  rom  coms  on  in  the  background  to  distract  from  the  horrific  loneliness  she’d  been  feeling  all  day.  she  figured  she’d  hit  the  shop  in  an  off  hour,  but  it  seems  someone  else  had  the  same  idea,  as  they  reach  for  the  same  bag  of  gummies  that  she’s  after.  “  you  can  have  them,  ”  she  states,  only  slightly  disappointed  (  her  haul  is  big  enough  already,  after  all  ),  “  really,  it’s  fine.  i’ve  got  enough  chocolate  to  last  me  a  lifetime  here.  ”

Vincent flinched slightly as he heard her words. Her tone was cold and her words were unfamiliarly cutting. He hadn’t expected his one act to have some wonderful reaction but if anything it seemed to have upset her more. “I mean a medal would be nice.” It’s a joke that falls flat, his delivery not even close to his usual, his voice a timid cower at best. “Well I did say that this was step one of three so you know not a week’s worth, I just had a couple of other things coming your way. I..” He trailed off. He could tell that continuing with the approach he was taking at the moment wasn’t going to work, if anything it looked like it might make things worse.

“You know what, fuck it.” Vincent walked over to their fridge, opening it to see that Noor had in fact left food in it for his dinner. “Are you hungry? I’ve got some things here to heat up that we could half and then instead of my surprises we can talk? Well, you can listen to me talk I guess.  Please?” He’d spoke with a confidence but as his eyes met hers again he knew that the betrayed him - his fear that she’d reject his attempts once again. It had been too long now and he was passed a small worry and there was a real panic that he’d upset her beyond reconciliation. She’d never held out this long before.  “Please?..” He reiterated.

       there  is  a  sincerity  in  his  tone  that  she  hasn’t  sensed  in  weeks  —  it’s  something  worth  taking  pause  for,  something  that  melts  her  icy  exterior  the  slightest  bit.  she  doesn’t  like  being  mad  at  him  —  doesn’t  like  being  mad  at  any  of  her  siblings  —  but  his  comments  had  gone  too  far  and   pierced  at  her  most  vulnerable  pieces.  but  if  he’s  truly  ready  to  apologize,  who  is  she  to  continue  to  shut  him  out.  

     “  i  could  eat,  ”  she  answers  nonchalantly  —  she  doesn’t  want  to  act  like  this  is  a  big  deal,  her  accepting  him  waving  the  white  flag,  even  though  it  very  much  is.  she  is  too  similar  to  vincent  not  to  understand  how  difficult  this  must  be  for  him.  she’s  not  going  to  meet  him  halfway  yet,  but  she’s  willing  to  give  a  little  and  meet  him  there  eventually  if  he’s  going  to  actually  try.  “  you  know,  if  you  started  with  this,  these  last  few  weeks  would’ve  been  a  lot  easier  on  the  both  of  us,  right  ?  ”  she  could  say  more,  but  she’s  more  interested  in  hearing  what  he  has  to  say  to  her.  there’ll  be  plenty  of  time  for  her  to  respond  after.  “  i’m  listening  . . .  ”

            𝒈𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒏   𝒕𝒉𝒆   𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆   𝒐𝒇   𝒅𝒂𝒚   ,   it’s   a   miracle   izak   is   even   at   home   .   but   his   schedule   had   been   shifted   around   a   little   giving   him   the   afternoon   to   do   ,   well   ,   whatever   he   wanted   .   he   supposes   he   could   have   gotten   some   extra   training   in      ;      being   on   the   ice   is   instinctual   ,   although   it   couldn’t   hurt   to   practice   for   a   few   more   hours   ,   ESPECIALLY   since   he’s   been   away   for   a   couple   of   months   .   but   he   hasn’t   seen   imogen   in   a   while   ,   so   he   supposes   a   catch   up   is   pretty   much   guaranteed   .   why   not   have   it   when   he   actually   has   some   time      ?      ❛      i   have   work   in   a   couple   of   hours   ,   but   a   glass   or   two   won’t   do   much   ,   right      ?      my   manager   already   doesn’t   like   me   ,   i   don’t   think   i   could   make   it   much   WORSE   ,      ❜      he   admits   with   a   quiet   chuckle   ,   placing   two   glasses   on   the   coffee   table   .      ❛      cel      &      gabe   are   out   ,   so   the   bottle’s   all   ours   .   are   you   having   one      ?      ❜

         “  i  really  shouldn’t.  ”  her  response  is  near  automatic,  so  used  to  turning  down  this  sort  of  indulgence  as  of  late.  her  schedule  has  only  gotten  more  and  more  busy  as  the  semester  soldiers  on,  which  doesn’t  leave  much  room  for  fun  —  but  that’s  not  the  whole  story.  since  ending  things  with  ambrose  only  months  prior,  her  willingness  to  let  loose  had  gone  right  out  the  window.  it  was  easier  to  focus  on  all  the  tasks  she  had  to  complete,  the  mountains  she  had  to  scale,  rather  than  to  take  a  moment  to  breathe  for  fear  that  her  entire  mask  of  doing  fine  might  shatter  as  soon  as  she  exhales.  “  but  i  don’t  mind  if  you  do.  i’ve  got  to  be  up  early  tomorrow.  i’ve  got  articles  to  edit  for  law  review.  an  editor  in  chief  never  rests.  ”

          like  a  child  on  christmas,  adeline  never  really  outgrew  the  excitement  that  came  from  big  occasions,  especially  not  her  own  birthday.  though,  in  hindsight,  it  wasn’t  anything  of  note,  no  major  age  milestones  or  overwhelming  importance  to  turning  twenty  -  six,  but  the  prospect  of  celebrating  it  with  her  friends  was  reason  enough  to  be  excited.  though  it  also  meant  that  she  was  up  earlier  than  she’d  normally  like,  she’d  quite  enjoyed  spending  the  morning  out  with  will,  a  perfect  start  to  what  was  bound  to  be  a  perfect  day.  any  day  that  involved  cake  generally  was.

          but  even  birthday  girl’s  needed  to  get  ready  for  their  day  ─  one  filled  with  classes  she  had  no  intention  of  attending  and  life  that  could  be  placed  on  pause  ─  addie’s  return  home  cited  as  a  need  to  look  presentable,  though  opening  the  door  to  her  bedroom  caused  her  jump  at  her  sister’s  exclamation.    ❝  are  you  serious  ?  ❞     her  eyes  are  quickly  alight  with  excitement  as  she  moves  to  quickly  throw  her  arms  around  imogen.     ❝  of  course  it’s  not  too  much,  i  love  it  !  there’s  so  many  heart  balloons,  they’re  so  cute  !  ❞

          a  smile  of  relief  takes  form  on  her  lips  when  addie  confirms  that  she  enjoys  the  manner  in  which  she’s  decorated  her  room.  she  was  near  certain  she  would,  but  ever  the  perfectionist,  even  the  0.1%  chance  that  she  might  not  enjoy  it  was  too  much  unknown  for  her  to  handle.  “  i  thought  you  would,  ”  she  beams  proudly,  stepping  aside  to  showcase  the  flowers  crowding  her  dresser  as  well,  “  happy  birthday,  sis.  i  hope  it’s  the  best  year  yet.  ”

     “  are  you  excited  for  tonight  ?  ”  she  nudges,  a  knowing  smile  on  her  lips,  “  will  didn’t  give  away  too  much  did  she  ?  i  mean,  i  know  it’s  not  a  surprise  party,  but  it’s  still  fun  to  have  some  element  of  the  unknown.  ”  of  course,  she  means  that  for  anyone  but  herself.  when  it  comes  to  her  own  occassions,  imogen  prefers  to  know  every  last  detail.

“ i don’t accept that. it can and will, ” she responds, knowing that exam time is when she gets her best imogen-should-drop-out material. she leans in, the hints of a devious smile forming. “ normally i’d recommend a painful method, but for you i could swipe one of sage’s potions. coffee isn’t shit compared to one of those. ” despite her other grievances with him, jazmine had to silently admit that her brother was a more-than-decent spellmaster and potion-maker. she cracks her knuckles, clearly still amused about her stunt. “ you’d be surprised. some guys are into it. i’m a fucking philanthropist – didn’t even charge him for the trouble. ” despite the unconvincing charade, they both knew imogen was right about jazmine always looking for trouble, and it wasn’t something jazmine was ashamed of.

       “  i  can  argue  all  day,  ”  she  jokes  (  although,  given  her  major,  maybe  it  isn’t  much  of  a  joke,  “  i  know  the  law  !!  ”  she  leans  in  closer,  listening  to  jaz’s  suggestion,  all  too  quickly  brushing  it  off  with  the  wave  of  a  hand.  “  i  appreciate  it,  but  i  don’t  want  to  depend  on  that  to  get  me  through  the  day,  you  know  ?  i  know  what  i  need  and  it’s  a  triple  shot  of  espresso.  ”  at  her  next  words,  she  can’t  help  but  to  let  out  a  scoff.  “  true,  there  are  a  lot  of  masochists  out  there,  but  something  tells  me  that  wasn’t  the  situation  here.  it’s  okay  though,  i’m  not  here  to  lecture  you.  just  —  be  smart  about  things,  yeah  ?  i  know  you  already  are,  but  sometimes  you  have  to  pick  your  battles,  you  know  ?  ”

          they  once  had  so  much  to  say  to  one  another   —   now,   ambrose  couldn’t  even  muster  up  a  single  word.   hundreds  of  conversations  forever  cataloged  in  the  archives  of  his  mind,   burned  into  the  backs  of  his  eyelids,   keeping  him  wide  awake  when  all  he  needed  was  a  good  night’s  sleep.   they’d  talked  about  their  futures,   meeting  families  and  spending  breaks  together.   summers  in  beverly  hills.   new  orleans  at  christmas.   had  it  all  been  one  big  lie ?   just  a  way  to  kill  time  until  she  met  the  person  she  was  actually  supposed  to  be  with ?   or  maybe  he  was  the  liar  here.   maybe  she  had  one  foot  out  the  door  all  along,   and  he’d  just  turned  a  blind  eye  because  he  didn’t  want  to  see  it.   maybe  what  he  thought  was  forever  in  his  story  was  never  meant  to  be  more  than  a  footnote  in  imogen’s.

          so  many  questions  he’d  never  get  answers  to,   permanently  hovering  on  the  tip  of  his  tongue.   only  once  he  physically  could  not  stare  at  his  plate  any  longer,   when  his  vision  blurred  the  strands  of  spaghetti  into  one  saucy  clump,   does  he  dare  to  find  her  gaze.   it  was  the  first  time  he’d  truly  allowed  himself  to  see  her  since  the  break - up.   she  looked   .  .  .   sad.   beautiful,   but  sad.   ❝   i  don’t  hate  you,   imogen.   ❞   it’d  be  easier  if  he  did,   but  how  could  you  hate  someone  you’d  spent  so  long  loving ?   ❝   and  i  do  mean  it.   not  talking  to  you  every  day   —   i  keep  waiting  for  it  to  get  easier,   but  it  never  does.   ❞

    the  way  in  which  he  looks  at  her  makes  her  heart  shatter.  knowing  that  she  is  the  cause  of  that  pain  makes  it  all  the  worse.  each  day  she  fears  she  made  a  grave  mistake  by  ending  things  with  ambrose  —  but  it  was  for  his  own  good.  she  is  a  sinking  ship  and  there  is  no  need  to  drag  someone  with  as  much  light  and  goodness  in  them  as  he  has  to  a  watery  grave.  he  deserves  far  better  than  she  could  ever  provide.  he  deserves  real  love,  not  something  clouded  by  the  pink  glow  of  aphrodite  —  not  something  that  she  could  unknowingly  influence  at  any  time.  it’s  never  intentional,  not  with  him,  but  maybe she  just  loved  him  so  much  that  she  made  him  love  her  back  of  her  own  accord.  she’s  not  sure  how  to  control  that  power,  it’s  always  frightened  her.  and  this  situation  is  exactly  why.  

        and  yet,  she  cannot  help  but  to  be  selfish,  to  keep  him  here  with  her  and  take  up  his  valuable  time.  she  cannot  bring  herself  to  move  from  this  table,  to  walk  away  and  let  him  go  about  his  day  without  her  presence  bringing  him  down.  “  i  know  what  you  mean  —  ”  she  admits  a  little  too  freely,   “  but  it’s  okay,  i  mean,  if  you  ever  start  to.  i’m  prepared  for  it.  feel  free  to  tell  your  friends  how  terrible  i  am.  rip  up  pictures  of  me.  burn  my  things  —  whatever  makes  you  feel  better.  ”  the  attempt  in  her  delivery  is  humor,  but  it  comes  across  as  more  pathetic  than  anything  else.  “  i’m  sorry  —  i  should’ve  just  gotten  up  when  you  sat  down.  i  made  this,  like,  really  weird.  ”
