Scott breathed out a heavy sigh of relief he hadnât realized heâd been holding and watched the gun disappear in the back of the car. He knew that Chris didnât see him as an enemy anymore but in his current state the hunter was probably willing to shoot anyone and anything to avenge Allison. All the more reason to be grateful that Chris was listening to him.
The hunterâs words cut deep. Scott tried to hide it, but for a moment it was clearly visible in his eyes. Chris was not the only one who had lost Allison. Scott had loved her too, despite everything that had happened between them, and it was all he could do not to lose his mind and go crazy Alpha on everyone who was responsible for her death.
"Weâll figure something out," he said, unable to lie to Chris about having a plan. Not in a moment like this. He didnât just need to convince him, he neede to make him trust him. âI want them dead for what they did just as much as you do. But I donât want to lose anyone else for that and that includes you. Please?â
Scott looked at the older man with worry in his eyes. "Talk to me, Chris," he said, hoping it would help this time. "Youâre not alone. I canât bring her back, but I am on your side and I can help you.â
"Talk to me."
"What do you want me to say?" It came out as a snarl. "She was my daughter. She was the only family I still had and she's gone." He had cousins, of course, but they were all far away and none of them spoke much. Everyone he had was more like colleagues than actual family.
He sucked in a breath, more shuddery than he would have liked. He dropped his voice slightly to a tightly controlled tone. Whether that was better or worse than the snarl was a matter of debate. "They have to die for what they did," he said. "I wanted to stop hunting, to give us--a normal life." If his breath hitched in the middle there he wouldn't admit it. "But now, I can't stop until they're dead. Or I am."
He wasn't sure why he added the last part. Maybe it was an attempt to take the lifeline, or at least tell Scott he needed one. Did he want one? Hard to say. His eyes were still on Scott's. His expression hadn't changed significantly, but his hands where they were hidden in his pockets were clenched so hard his nails were almost drawing blood.
He didn't know what he expected. But he needed something. Some reason not to get back in the car and take off.
