you wanna know what's insane? my scrivener doc that contains [almost] ALL of my fic relating to the boys (well, maeve) including ALL ideas, WIPs, completed fic, etc. is titled "maeve spinoff shit". because. 95% of this happened after i went clinically hyperfixated after s3 ended and decided to take it upon myself to write the spinoff for her character that never happened. over 585,000 words altogether in here btw

while working on this maeve amnesia fic* i've been turning over in my brain for a while, which involves both annie and elena interacting extensively with maeve after total memory loss, it's hard not to get to thinking, like, who is the "best" person for her in that scenario

and honestly? there is a clear answer

the answer is madelyn.

madelyn is 100% the best person to help maeve "recover" from amnesia. ("healthiest"? "most loving"? maybe not. but she would solve those pesky identity crises and get girl up to speed and saying all the right lines again in record time. cuz yknow what? SHE DID IT ONCE, SHE COULD DO IT AGAIN.)

*in addition to the 1-2 i've already written, depending on what you count as "amnesia". (though, tbf, I guess both of those two are more like memory loss or memory manipulation than classic "amnesia". anyway it is a topic that i find very interesting to explore, as you can see)

a truly shocking number of people on the singles ladder willingly decide to switch in their hippowdon on my meganium. I do not know why. I have considered this many times because it has happened many times. I don't know what is going through their heads when they choose to bring in their slow ground type that never carries (or even learns?) any moves that can do meaningful damage to my faster grass-type which pretty obviously is also gonna be a mega because why would anyone have meganium if it's not gonna mega evolve.

i've been doing very mediocrely on the singles ladder but on the monthly challenge i just went 11-4 on the 15 allotted battles. lol. like. idk if i just got lucky with weak matchups... definitely i think playing at a time of night when it's just started and not lots of people are on and maybe some of the people on were just experimenting with battles bc it just started and they don't actually know what they're doing in singles? (i did see one that looked like a default team, maybe that person did what i did last month and accidentally signed up and locked in their monthly challenge team when they first opened champions)

yknow how some people are like "oh OSRS seems maybe fun but I just could never play it because the graphics are so ugly" i shake my head at it like wow what a shame you're missing out but yknow what? i'm a hypocrite because that's exactly how i feel about minecraft

one thing that bugs me so much about LLM-generated (or heavily assisted, whatever) text (in addition to the many other things like the ethical implications, environmental impact, disrespect to the reader...) is that it actually is fucking HARDER for me as a reader to discern any useful information from it.

I genuinely think the majority of AI (generated/assisted) writing I encounter is WORSE for communication purposes than if the person wrote something themselves.

like. there's the obvious factor of you don't know if there are any factual errors the AI added. but it also often changes what it EMPHASIZES compared to what a human would do. i've seen AI note taking things take things that in context of the human discussion it's "summarizing" were obviously minor or irrelevant and place them as if they're main points in the summary.

plus, the way it adds the fucking bold and headings and shit feels so goddamn arbitrary and makes it way harder to isolate what actually matters. if every topic has its own header and sub-headers like "Key takeaways" "action items" "maximum synergy" or whatever thefuck buzzwords the AI uses - and it is very fucking obvious the chatbot did that with minimal input from the human, IF ANY - THAT JUST MAKES IT HARDER TO TELL WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERS!

it's not only distracting filler that serves little purpose, it OBSCURES the actual communication

I would so much rather a human write me an email that says something like "can you follow up with John about XYZ" even if it's "poorly written" (aka brief, informal, maybe not following 'proper grammar') than an email that uses 200 words and some unnecessary bold and bullet points to make me wade through to figure out that what they actually want me to do is follow up with john about XYZ.

WE NEED TO PUSH BACK AGAINST THIS BECAUSE NOT ONLY IS IT WRONG IN SO MANY OTHER WAYS, IT IS ACTUALLY LESS EFFICIENT TIME-WISE BECAUSE ANY TIME SAVED FOR THE WRITER IS LOST BY THE READER WHO ACTUALLY WANTS TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IS MEANT TO BE COMMUNICATED!!!!

(but of course the ppl pushing this don't care about that. because they don't actually care about clear communication. they just care about the illusion of 'efficiency'. they think people sending AI-generated emails for other people to ignore because they're pointless AI-generated fluff represents a gain in productivity because wow look how many more emails we sent while spending less time reading and writing them!!! forgetting that SENDING EMAILS IS NOT AN ACTUAL END GOAL, IT IS A MEANS TO AN END OF COMMUNICATING SOMETHING BETWEEN TWO HUMANS, AND IF IT FAILS AT THAT, IT DOESNT MATTER IF IT ONLY TOOK YOU 2 SECONDS TO GENERATE IT AND SOMEONE ELSE 2 SECONDS TO IGNORE IT AND DELETE, THAT IS 4 SECONDS WASTED WITH NOTHING ACCOMPLISHED!!!!)

been playing some pretty mindless singles tonight trying not to care about winrate but just work towards some win badges with various mons and i've noticed something that's like very starkly clear

if i lose a couple battles and drop to lower ranks then i know with absolute certainty that if i see a meowscarada on the team preview, the person is gonna lead with it and it will be a free KO if i lead with talonflame because the person will also not know about gale wings

if I win a couple games and get out of the lowest dregs, that never happens anymore

it's so funny how stark of a knowledge line there is just based on if i've won the last couple or lost lol

spent forty-five minutes today helping an 87yo woman who does not own a computer or a cell phone try to set up an email account so that she could then set up a second account in order to access benefits. went with protonmail, because they don't require 2fa, but it turns out that while you can still make a protonmail account without authentication you can no longer use it to create OTHER accounts without it, and the benefits page she needed to get to required both an email and a cell phone to create an account anyway. asked if she wanted to try going in person to see if someone there could help her, and she said that she had, and they'd directed her to the website. she tried signing up with her landline, but of course that didn't work because you can't do SMS authentication that way. finally ended up writing up detailed instructions for how to log in and authenticate her account so she can drive to her severely disabled daughter's house forty minutes away because that's the only person she knows and trusts who has both a cell phone and a computer.

anyway i fucking hate mandatory 2fa and i think the people responsible for it should have to spend a year navigating their lives with no cell phone and no internet access beyond the public library pcs. fuck.

one of the best ways i’ve found to combat that inherent depressive pessimism without veering into toxic positivity territory is simply the phrase “i’m open to the possibility”

this particularly works with anything negative i’ve forecasted. “i woke up feeling like shit today, so my day is gonna suck” isn’t a particularly helpful thought, but “it’s a great day to be alive!!!!!” feels hollow and insincere when i have a pounding headache & am running on three hours of sleep

instead i’ll tell myself, “i really don’t feel good right now, but i’m open to the possibility that coffee and breakfast might perk me up a bit.” or “i’m in a lot of pain today, but i’m open to the possibility that my workday might still have fun parts despite that”

sometimes, when your impulse is to slam the door on anything good, but you’re not exactly up to going out & hunting it down yourself, leaving the door open just a crack makes all the difference

incredibly baffling match I just had at ~1600s elo (so fairly low, but not the absolute lowest dregs where i've sometimes been)

on their team preview, i see they have a farig but overall a fairly fast team with things like garchomp, charizard, gliscor... so I assume not trick room, i bring my own trick room setter

turn 1 my gardevoir uses trick room, their farig ALSO uses it, undoing it. I am not sure if they wanted it up or were reading me and denying it to me. but my gardevoir's focus sash is still active so I shrug and click it again

turn 2, WE BOTH TRICK ROOM AGAIN. meanwhile i took out their other mon.

turn 3 they send out gliscor which is a big threat as i have 2/4 mons weak to ground so I realize i need to double target it (and hey, if they set trick room again, that's fine with me) and hope to get it out of the way and i manage to do so and they do set up the trick room.

i wait with bated breath for why they wanted TR up so badly - the slowest mon on their team was Sylveon, so I'm probably in for some helping hand hyper voice spam, right? (and that could legitimately be an issue for me)
