I've also been driving a lot because I have my permit now so I'm getting practice in and I regularly go through an extremely wealthy area (houses are well into the millions) and it's actually crazy how often I see people driving around on actual full roads in golf carts or half scale cars (super not legal or safe! those are for private properties and not actual roads!)

Like I'm sorry but I'm driving an SUV at 45 mph on winding roads and you're driving either a fucking tin car without seat belts or a mini car literally made for children with no real safety features. I am SCARED. Get AWAY from me.

These people are in an extremely busy tourist area literally packed with a nonstop flood of cars and a lot of drivers who either don't know how to drive or don't know state laws, driving around in "vehicles" that are absolutely not intended for the road and often aren't even visible from larger vehicles like trucks and SUVs. The hubris is ASTOUNDING.

I think people online treat driving too casually tbh, like there was a poll about people's bad habits while driving and they weren't bad habits or problematic or whatever, they were all things that literally kill people every single day. My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.

A lot of people support Land Back not because they actually care about indigenous sovereignty but because they're using Native people to soothe their settler guilt and indulge in violent fantasies where they can play the victim with Native people as the aggressors, all with the reassurance that that kind of violence will NEVER actually happen to them. Like so many narratives I see about supposed future sovereignty are just a continuation of centuries old stories about savage Indians mercilessly butchering, kidnapping, and raping settlers except somehow framed as progressive.

It's all just some sort of sick fantasy. People can point to the "future" they're supporting and claim that they're totally fine being murdered in their own homes by the savage Indians noble Natives reclaiming their land and be fully secure in the knowledge that that will never happen and so those claims and that "support" will never actually have any consequences.

Generally speaking, if you haven't been in a war zone, been at risk of being murdered by soldiers when in your home or walking down the street, been forced to huddle in a bomb shelter as missiles fly overhead or buildings collapse around you from bombings, or any of the other horrific and dangerous and deeply traumatizing experiences that come with war happening in your home country, then I don't think you should be cheering on any war ever.

I think the reason why Americans are so comfortable treating war in other countries as a game or a sports match to spectate is because we're so utterly disconnected from the realities of it and we don't even realize most of the time because our country is so obsessed with war. It's just that all the wars we're obsessed with are happening in other peoples' homes.

Also this is gonna be mean but sometimes people on this site refuse to give their own opinions on anything because they don't feel like they're educated enough about the topic, which is totally fair and I think more people need to learn that their voice is not always needed. . . but then those same people turn around and repeat whatever their mutuals say, even when those mutuals aren't really educated on it either!

People online often mistake passion for education and facts, but just because someone says something loudly and repeatedly does not mean they actually know what they're talking about. I will remind people that one of the biggest signs of a scam is urgency. A scammer does not want you to look away or click out of the tab or hang up the phone. They make you feel like there's a very close time limit, like you have to act NOW if you want to protect your bank account/not get arrested/help your (grand)child/save an animal/save a person/etc, and they will use manipulation tactics like guilt tripping and making you feel rushed to keep you from taking a step back and having a moment to think.

If someone who is asking for money is rushing you, making you feel pressured to give them money immediately and making you feel guilty or like you're in some sort of danger if you have any questions or doubts or hesitation, they are scamming you. They are doing everything they can to get your money before you have time to think or do any research, and then they vanish as soon as they get what they want.

Reminder (because I recently encountered this) that huge discounts that will expire soon are another type of urgency some scams will use. This one's especially tricky because it looks similar to common sales tactics used by some real businesses. But if a website says anything like "once you click away, you'll never see this deal again," or if they're offering a discount or sale that's way higher than normal, or they claim they're closing out their business soon and must get rid of everything, it's a good idea to pause, open a new tab, and do some research before you buy anything. Some good places to start are to do an online search for "[business name] scam," or to look up the business on Trustpilot.
