my current thoughts on the bear s3 episodes 1-5.. it’s a long one & spoilers ahead!
first off i just wanna express how much i love our lil community in this tag and seeing people equally as invested in a great show 💕
that being said… i think i share of lot of the sentiments i’ve seen since last night that it feels like the ball was totally dropped. at large the writing was .. lackluster and there was way to much Fak and co. for me. at this point the celeb cameos feel like a gimmick that cheapen the show.
now to sydcarmy specifically.. from the beginning they’ve denied the romanticness of it all. heard. but s2 specifically planted so many seeds of that possible connection between the two and it feels like season 3 was a complete drawback - almost crisis response to the public perception of sydney and carmen’s characters. to me it feels like a cop out for some reason like idk i just feel as though all the creatives on this show are so attentive to detail that there’s no way they created a romantic subtext between sydney and carmen on accident!! but now to see in season 3 a completely stripped relationship between the two, it feels like their explicit goal was PLATONIC vibes which they very well could’ve done from the beginning if that was their true intent! there were a couple glimpses (the scallop dish being syds best meal, syd widening carmen’s margins) that still reminded me of that delicate relationship between the two but other than that it felt like a complete 180.
my biggest gripe obviously is all of the claire that was forced on us like. i’m obvi a proponent of the sydcarmy endgame agenda but truly and honestly i would root for carm and claire (anyone who makes him happy honestly) as long as it’s developed properly! the flashbacks to create some semblance of intimacy and chemistry between the two felt lazy bc yall (showrunners) could’ve crafted that last season and shown how important that relationship actually was to carmy through her absence in his life this season. like idk it all felt like damage control! i’m still not convinced because as good as yall write these intricacies between carm and syd i know they could really write something substantial and beautiful with claire and carmy and idk what the disconnect is but it’s just isn’t working.
it also felt like the Fak of it all was trying to prove hey we are really a comedy see it’s so funny! but it ended up being corny, awkward and some scenes were just way too drawn out. the bear is funny when it isn’t tryingggg to be.
it’s really disheartening to see so many lackluster reviews but they’re not wrong… it just doesn’t feel like the bear we all know and love. i did really love episode 1 though and look forward to revisiting it. other standout moments for me so far was marcus’s speech at the funeral and seeing more of sydney and tina’s working relationship develop.
so yeah… idk when i’ll finish the rest of the season. i’ve been reading some spoilers here just cause i couldn’t take the anxiety of it all but im eager for everyone to catch up and leave their thoughts in the tag!
