As India took its place on the world stage in the 20th century Raghu Rai was there.
The photographer, who died last month, at the age of 83, spent his life chronicling the highs and lows of the country’s post-colonial evolution.

The word "Rabari" translates to "outsiders" or "wanderers," perfectly capturing their historical migratory lifestyle. According to tribal mythology, the Hindu deity Shiva created the first Rabari man to look after a camel created by his wife, Parvati. Consequently, they view animal husbandry as a sacred duty, acting as guardians rather than mere owners of their herds.
Historically, they were exclusively camel herders. Due to ecological changes and shrinking grazing lands, they have adapted to herd sheep, goats, and cattle.
During the dry summer months, the men leave their permanent villages to embark on long-distance migrations, chasing seasonal rains and pastures for their animals. The women and children usually remain behind in the villages to manage the households. #rabari #jawai #rajasthan #india

He revolutionised the idea of fashion photoshoot by travelling to India.
Along with models Anne Gunning & Barbara Mullen he travelled from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, posing at iconic spots bringing out the cultural richness, architecture and colors of India.
