Oh yeah Donald Trump is totally an ally to the LGBT+ community. He said there’s nothing he could do about same-sex marriage because it’s already done (because everyone knows LGBT rights stop at marriage) and his opinion on it is irrelevant at this point. And one time he even held up the rainbow flag for like a minute! A true champion.
I mean I know he’s done the following:
He’s expressed support for the First Amendment Defense Act that would allow businesses, landlords and healthcare providers to deny services to LGBT individuals It’s on his own website FFS.
Trump and Pence have already said that the protections for trans students and the set of guidance for administrators and school staff on how to support trans students will be rolled back on.
He’s promised that he’s going to cancel every executive action issued by Obama - meaning Executive Order 13672, which states that federal contractors cannot be fired on the basis of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
Despite the 60 minutes interview where Trump said that same-sex marriage is done and he can’t do anything about it, he’s previously stated that he would strongly consider appointing judges to overturn the ruling.
Trump’s shortlist of Supreme Court nominees include extremely anti-LGBT judges.
After the Pulse Nightclub shooting Trump promised to protect us against foreign ideology that oppressed the LGBT community - conveniently ignoring the homegrown anti-LGBT violence, rhetoric, and policy that already exists in the U.S, people like his own running mate.
He appointed Tony Perkins to his advisory council who has stated that anti-LGBT advocacy, namely conversion therapy, has not gone far enough. Perkins said that he was grateful that Trump’s campaign was the only GOP campaign in recent history that he hasn’t had to fight with over these issues.
And his own VP pick is Mike Pence, who has done the following:
Stated on his own website while running for congress that “Congress should oppose any effort to put gay and lesbian relationships on equal status with heterosexual marriage. Congress should oppose any effort to recognize homosexuals as a discrete and insular minority entitled to the protection of anti-discrimination laws.”
Signed into law Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which “allows businesses and individuals to discriminate against anyone who offends their religious sensibilities.”
Voted against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act because it would “wage war on the free exercise of religion in the workplace,” by covering sexual orientation.
His policies led to the only HIV testing center to be shut down in Scott County, Indiana. This rural Planned Parenthood was the only clinic to provide HIV testing and education.
Pence proposed cutting off funds for HIV prevention to divert the money to “ex-gay” therapy programs. This would ensure that “federal dollars were no longer being given to organizations that celebrate and encourage the types of behaviors that facilitate the spreading of the HIV virus.” Instead, “resources should be directed toward those institutions which provide assistance to those seeking to change their sexual behavior.”
Said that gay couples are “societal collapse was always brought about following an advent of the deterioration of marriage and family.” In the same speech he said keeping gays from marrying was not discrimination, but an enforcement of “God’s idea.”
And his white house team is already looking to be a delightful group of bigots but yeah I totally get how you might think Trump is “a champion for LGBT rights.” I mean he literally said those words, so it must be true?
