"How many scars did you justify because you loved the person who was holding the knife?"
Stay away from people who think you're arguing every time you try to express yourself.
May 18, 1913 Letters to Felice by Franz Kafka First published : 1973

I have been a road for as long as I can remember.
Not a place to stay, never a destination—
just something stretched thin between where they were
and where they were going.
They stepped onto me without looking down,
carried their unfinished selves across my length,
left the weight of their footsteps pressed into me
like quiet confessions I was never meant to keep.
I learned the language of passing—
the brief warmth of presence,
the slow cooling of absence,
the way silence settles after someone leaves for good.
No one asked what it cost
to be so endlessly open.
No one wondered if the road aches
from being walked on,
if it dreams of closing in on itself
just once,
to become something whole.
I have watched them arrive empty
and leave filled with something they found along me—
a thought, a feeling, another person—
never realizing I was the place
they emptied themselves into.
And still, I stayed.
Wide, willing, unguarded.
Mistaking usefulness for love,
mistaking direction for meaning.
But even roads, I think,
must crack somewhere.
Must split under the strain
of carrying too many unfinished journeys.
Perhaps one day
I will refuse to lead anywhere at all.
Let the weeds grow through me,
let the edges blur,
let myself become something
no one can simply pass through.
Something that cannot be used
to reach another.
Something that exists
without pointing away from itself.
