The face had been left untouched by the passing years, the only indication where the spare graying hair that touched his temples. Yet his expression was alert and jovial, despite the crime the man orchestrated. “That’s where we are no more further from each other’s knowledge. Medic has been working underground up until this point, and that’s because he has obtained a beneficiary, one Gray Mann.” He turned over a picture of a greatly aged man, cast off from the main group of others. “Youngest of the Mann Triplets, claws his way up in the robotics industries as he was shunned by his own family. Reports say he has recently been seen with Ludwig. Now Medic is roaming on plain sight, however is surveyed under Mann’s hired body guards but there are no clues in Mann’s bank accounts of any money moved.”
“I’m inclined to think maybe Mann has Ludwig under his thumb, for whatever reason. But if we squeeze him, we’re one step closer to the Medic and stopping this operation before things get worse.” He rolled the vial under his palm as he ran it along the desktop, taking his flask and knocking back a chug.
“Gray Mann?” Another name, well surname, that was familiar in his records. He knew mostly the two ‘older’ triplets, Redmund and Blutarch Mann in their own little war in their own industries to the point of hiring mercenaries in hopes of winning. Blutarch even tried to hire him once in his previous life but he declined when he hung up his name to be a private investigator only. He was however lucky to have some names working for him as his contacts.
“Now I wonder why Gray Mann needed Medic for since drugs and robots are a strange combination.”
He leaned back against his chair, propping his ankle on his knee, his fingers drumming against the table while nursing his bowl of food. “Squeeze him? It’ll take more than squeezing information out of him if we could get close to him. We don’t even know what he can do other than outdated track records.”
“Well unlike our timeless friend, Gray Mann has two back stabbing brothers that I’m sure would love to be rid of him. If we get the information we need to get to Gray, we can get what we need about Medic. We could convince him that his alliance with Ludwig would be too costly for any deal to be beneficial. Classic Domino Effect.”
Joshua stated with a final bite of his meal, wiping his chin free of the sauce. “Now, I think it’s about time we get in contact with your inside source so we can better see a path to set a plan. I want to make sure we aren’t blindsided by any agents that could tip Ludwig off into hiding again. We lose him now, it’s going to be hell on my cade, which will affect yours as well.”
“How soon can we meet up?”
While Joshua laid out the ideas, Sterling returned to his meal. His brain was scrambling for his own plans regarding of Joshua’s idea. Killing two birds with one stone plan option. Sounds tricky but it sounds like a good plan with enough resources and enough information to tip the scales.
Until it comes to that.
“I’ll have to make a call to see about it.” He glanced at the clock on the wall. It’s been half and hour since they’ve been talking while eating. A perfect excuse to make a phonecall to someone. “Speaking of which, I’ll call him now. Excuse me.” He set the bowl down, stood up, and grabbed his phone from the table, heading for the other room. Closing the door to ensure he won’t hear his conversation, Sterling speed dialed a colleague. “It’s Sterling. I need your help on a location.”
By the time Sterling had returned from his call, Joshua took it upon himself to make a spread of various information, pictures and hastily scratched notes to explain the connection between the pieces. The man was prone to boredom. There where only a few things he took from Sterling's pile, as they were more relevant to the case. "We do need to approach Gray Mann discretely, if wind of our involvement gets to this gent here-"
Joshua tapped a pen to a barely focused view of a full faced mask looking over his shoulders. "-He'll have Ludwig relocated. And thats if the man doesn't know first. The only thing we have is the element of surprise. I can not stress enough that if we lose this thread, we've signed our death warrants."
Joshua took a seat on the edge of the desk, looking back to Sterling. "What's the word?"
"So does the cause of 'Save a horse, Ride a cowboy' apply to all Texans or-?"
“I would rather be trampled to death.” Dell spat, glaring up at the spy with distain covering the fear in his eyes.
"Honest, just trying to pass the time in a prank war with my little buddy and I maaaay have gone a smidge too far." Joshua held his hands up defensively, shrugging as a voice called out from across the two bases.
"WHEN I GET AHOLD YOUR ASS, I WILL STICK MY BOOT SO FAR UP YOUR ASS YOU'LL BE SPITTING OUT MY LACES FOR WEEKS!"
"A fair reaction to blowing up a picture of her holding hands with another party, but I'm actually not keen to see if she will make good on that threat. You understand."
Dell snorted like pissed stallion and if it was any other class would have tuned his back to leave but since Joshua was a spy he stood his ground glaring daggers behind his goggles but otherwise not actively hostile yet, which was a good sign.
“Find yer fun elsewhere snake.” Although if he didn’t Dell would be happy to watch Jonny kick his ass.
"Aw come on, I can be quiet, Johnny is really steamed now" Joshua pleaded, leaving out that he was partially bored but Dell didn't need to know that. "I can even keep my hands out to show you no tricks."
"Pleeeeease?"
“And what? Ya think I can protect ya from her?” Dell scoffed, like the spy had just asked him to jump in front of a train. Folding his arms he made it clear begging would not work here. Not only did he not trust the snake but he also didn’t want to get between the Soldier and her prey.
“Scram spook.” Dell said, trying not to give away the fact he was unable to leave until the spy did, the tunnel he had gone into to collect scraps was a dead end so unless the spy passed him he was stuck with the spook, and like hell he was gonna let the mam in arms length.
"Okay, while I respect your gruff abrasive rapprochement, you leave me no choice, cause Doe is one level of anger from being unhinged." Joshua produced what looked like ball bearings from his pocket and flung them to the stationary dispenser. The ball bearings stuck to the metal sheeting before melting into the material. Joshua then jumped into the air, tucking himself into a ball and phased right into the machinery.
Dell stared, blinked, then lifted his goggles and rubbed his eyes before going over the dispenser, and examined the spot where the spy had been phased.
“What in sam hell?” He muttered, utterly perplex and wondering if the medic had put anything psychedelic in their needle gun or if this was some more wizard magic madness.
After a moment he took out his destruction remote and exploded his dispenser.
As the machinery violently disassembled, Joshua was curled up into a ball, slowing looking up with an awkward smile. "Come on, you hate me for being a spy more than you love your lil robots?"
Just then, Johnny rounded the corner, zeroing in on Joshua that she ignored the RED as the soldier shoved past Dell. "CMERE, YOU COWARD!"
"JOHNNY PLEASE, IT WAS A JOKE, IT WAS A JOKE!!!!" The two ran in circles around the Texan before Joshua lead the chase away in a blind panic, leading them straight into a sentry, ending their chaotic dispute in the enemy base.
"So does the cause of 'Save a horse, Ride a cowboy' apply to all Texans or-?"
“I would rather be trampled to death.” Dell spat, glaring up at the spy with distain covering the fear in his eyes.

“I have my own sources.” Joshua shuffled through the file, pulling out a mug shot of a fiery red headed who blew a kiss to the camera. “Rudy Marbello. Heir to the third richest horse breeders for Kentucky Derby races. His father, Howard Striker, is an investor on Ludwig’s, funding about a quarter million into his Drug endeavors monthly. You wouldn’t put money into a product unless it was truly highend.” “Sadly, some dope thought he could market the stuff himself for cheaper for the lesser vagrants and it’s caused a surge of crimes all over, adding to the chaos and covering our star’s tracks. I suspect that was his plan.”
“As his codename applies, he has records of his service in the late World War,said to have performed miracles on the field, and yet-” Joshua pulls out a Death Certificate for a Josef Ludwig. “Had fallen in battle.”
“So new name, new career, new clientele all with a new method to ‘heal’ them” He reached into his breast pocket and held up a vial. It contained a strange fluid that seemed to emitted a soft glow. It moved in a vicious manner yet the surface tension seemed more watery. It was placed on the desk between them.
“This is microUber. The designer drug that is suppose to fix whatever ails you and grants brief invincibility and strength.”
With the file taken back to find his answers, Sterling returned to the bowl. His answer was received raised brows. The name sounded familiar but the picture made it clear enough. He has heard of Rudy. Well, through magazines and those online ‘news reports’. It was interesting how he became Joshua’s informer. The more you know than surface level appearance.
The mentioned amount has Sterling nearly choking on his food. “Quarter of a million? Bloody hell, I can understand how his drug got around the lower criminals.”
He took the records from Joshua to read what the Medic has done during the war and the death certificate. And soon the drug held between Joshua’s fingers.
“Bloody hell…This man is either a mad man himself or a fucking genius. Now here’s a question if you have an answer for this.” He held up a picture of Josef’s war photo and a recent picture of him. “Why the bloody hell does he look the same? No records of plastic surgery in here.”
The face had been left untouched by the passing years, the only indication where the spare graying hair that touched his temples. Yet his expression was alert and jovial, despite the crime the man orchestrated. "That's where we are no more further from each other's knowledge. “Do you get in person reports from your source or do they drop off information?” He asked, his tone more serious, dancing along the lines of conducting confirmation of Sterling’s methods and almost accussory. Like the Detective, trust isn’t free, and if pooling resources was going to help them, they need to be sure anything with held isn’t going to bite them on the ass and jeopardize the case.
“Hate to think you’re being spoon feed information, especially if the source may be compromised…or dead.” Joshua took up another load of noodles, slurping them up.
He almost wanted to laugh but there was noodles in his mouth so he resorted to chuckle as his answer while he chewed his food and soon swallowed them. The bowl set aside to pick up Joshua’s file to read them.
“I assure you my sources are reliable and yes I get them in person.” Via force or lots of espionage.
Over a glass of whiskey, green eyes skimmed over the information to find anything similar to what he has gotten to what he hasn’t gotten. Most of it was something he didn’t have and something he didn’t expected to look into during his investigation. “Interesting…This ‘Medic’ is somehow assisting our fellow friends with this drug he’s making. Top secret, hah, how much were you able to learn about this drug?”
"I have my own sources." Joshua shuffled through the file, pulling out a mug shot of a fiery red headed who blew a kiss to the camera. "Rudy Marbello. Joshua had already opened the door before he let Sterling grant him permission, a trait the man will have to get use to in this case. He held a file up, as if showcasing a high end product. “As much as I am humbled that you have asked me to aid you on this case, I am bound by my word to make sure I am guaranteed your competence. Casual business expectancy, you understand. As in you show me yours and I show you mine. It really pains me to say that this isn’t me coming on to you.” Joshua takes a seat, seeming to have made himself quite at home, knowing that Sterling wouldn’t have made this call if it wasn’t high priority. He tapped the file on his knee, giving the floor to the investigator for the promising trade.
Midnight has came, the door newly unlocked for Joshua to arrive, but didn’t expect him to breeze in without knocking. A fight or flight response jumped in the man’s skin, he was ready to knock the other man out cold.
“I hope you brought the burgers. I’m hungry.” The last meal he ate was a sandwich and that was nearly 12 hours ago and majority of the time was coffee. He did promised booze so this time it was whiskey this time.
The file Sterling has on his own investigation was pushed towards Joshua. “This is all I have now show me yours.”
“Better, Chow Mein! Cooked by my Uncle.” Joshua hoisted a bento cloth bag to display his peace offering before setting it on the desk. Placing his file down, he took up Sterling’s, scanning the information for he sucked his teeth and dropped the file. “Do you have someone as an inside source?”
He opened the cloth to the bag, uncovering one of the two bowls, peeling the protective covering off. Taking up a fork, he stirred up the noodles, releasing the strong aromatic scent in the air before taking a bite.
“Sad. I’ve been craving for one.” While Sterling sounded disappointed by the hopeful deal, he accepted Chinese food, and hey, it was cooked by a relative of his. Nothing beats home cooked food. The strong aroma of Chow Mein hit his nostrils, triggering his stomach to growl in response.
“Yes, but they’re kept a secret for safety reasons, even if I have to trust you.” It was clearly a lie since he’s his own inside source via another identity.
He left Joshua’s file be in favor for the second bowl. He was famished. The food was heaven on his tongue and he held back a moan in delight. “God, this is delicious. Tell your Uncle this is the best chow mein I’ve ever had.”
"Do you get in person reports from your source or do they drop off information?" “Forget about twists Sterling, this case has traps and pitfalls, nevermind the corrupted cops that would do anything to keep you from digging deeper into the rabbit hole.” His tone sounded more urgent, though his smile was persistent. “Listen, I have no doubt about your capabilities, but this is much bigger and has ties to people that will guarantee that you would never be found.” “I have stakes in this claim myself but too much is at risk to get directly involved, so I can only offer assistance from public eye. Being seen together could put you in the ground faster. All I really need is your permission.” The man wipes at his face, clearing throat wlthat made him drop his smile. “ I will not jeopardize myself if I am unwanted, but I encourage you to think about whether or not proceeding alone is wise. Alot of people are going to get hurt if you blotch this case. Even those not involved.”
“Now then, it is late and I do have to check in with my contact.” He pulled a card and placed it on the desk, sliding it to Sterling. It was blank. “Should you require my assistance. Goodnight.”
The grin stayed on the investigator’s face even if the good side of his mouth was starting to drop by Joshua’s insistence to be extra careful. If only this man knew what he has done in the past and whatever that is on this file barely scratch the surface of his skills and past cases. Especially how many people he had beaten up badly.
Finally, Sterling half frowned. As much as he dislike Joshua’s offering, he was right however. He’s why who he is now and why he’s here in this city. He allowed himself to stew in his silence to think even as the other man up and left his office leaving behind a blank card from first glance.
Once he made sure, Joseph finally left and not hiding anywhere outside his door, he decided to make a call with a particular ‘friend’. “The Shadow here.” He said, examining the card knowing there’s details hidden o it. “We’re going to have a bit of a setback. I got new information.”
Three days has passed when Joseph finally got a call from Sterling. “Joshua? It’s Sterling. Whatever you have that I don’t, please bring it to my place tonight. Midnight. And bring burgers too. I’ll have coffee ready.”
Joshua had already opened the door before he let Sterling grant him permission, a trait the man will have to get use to in this case. He held a file up, as if showcasing a high end product. Your life, as often fretted with, is in danger.” Joshua took a seat and took the glass, raising it in salute before knocking it back. “I will not insult you by suggesting you need help, but this is not a case you can not afford to do alone.” “The man you are after has influenced among not just the criminal syndicate of this city, but the law enforcement and mayoral office.” A hand dug into the inner lining of his jacket, holding a file with Sterling’s photo and details of the man’s place of work and address along with a general schedule of his whereabouts. “You have been marked as Dead Man Walking.”
“Not that you are known to know when to quit. I quite admire that about you.” The man smirks.
“Yes well, you caught me at a bad time and my brain is not functioning yet to guess the harder work.” Without his gloves on, Joshua can see the blue robotic right hand swirling the glass before he took a sip of it. He could feel the liquid burn the back of his throat but it does give a kick after the three hour nap. He still needed coffee however.
Sterling examined the details Joshua has noted down, impressed by the in-depth notes about his day to day life. As Sterling however. He leaned against his chair, crossing his legs while he listened to the other man.
Dead Man Walking. That almost had him snorting but a grin did stretch on his face. That sounded like a good nickname. “My motto is to ensure that my cases give them satisfaction in the results. No matter the cause and what twist I’ll stumble upon.”
"Forget about twists Sterling, this case has traps and pitfalls, nevermind the corrupted cops that would do anything to keep you from digging deeper into the rabbit hole." His tone sounded more urgent, though his smile was persistent. "Listen, I have no doubt about your capabilities, but this is much bigger and has ties to people that will guarantee that you would never be found."
"I have stakes in this claim myself but too much is at risk to get directly involved, so I can only offer assistance from public eye. Being seen together could put you in the ground faster. All I really need is your permission." The man wipes at his face, clearing throat wlthat made him drop his smile. " I will not jeopardize myself if I am unwanted, but I encourage you to think about whether or not proceeding alone is wise. Alot of people are going to get hurt if you blotch this case. Even those not involved."
"Now then, it is late and I do have to check in with my contact." He pulled a card and placed it on the desk, sliding it to Sterling. It was blank. "Should you require my assistance. Goodnight."

The sound of his doorknob jiggling snapped Sterling awake from his slumber. It was meant to be a ten minute nap and somehow, he ended sleeping for three hours. This case was taking its toll on his sleep but it was just like any of his previous cases he took.
Only his past cases doesn’t involve someone attempting to break into his office. Especially when he’s napping in the next room. The investigator pressed his back against the wall, minimizing his breathing as he listened to the door being pick locked.
Once he heard the sound of his door opening, he pointed his handgun towards the figure from the darkness, his thumb on the hammer waiting to be pulled down. The hallway lights pooling in allowed Sterling to see that it was a man. A stranger.
“Hands where I can see them and tell me what was your plan to break into my office at this time of night?”
The silhouette merely chuckled, pulling one hand up in surrender while the other brought a lighter up, a face outlining the shape of the man’s jaw where an end of a cigarette prodded the flame, igniting it. The flame was extinguished with a flourished snap of his wrist, face obstructed again by the darkness with only a red cherry end to contrast.
“With all that’s at stake, are you sure you can afford to sleep? Plenty of people would see to you dead for poking your nose into your business.” The light switch clicked, a heavily garbed short man stood there, with a hat covering the upper half of his face. “Luckily for you, I want to make sure you’re not killed to be able to see this through.”
“Joshua Hosser, unless my grandmother calls, I’m Yan!” He jokes, hands still in the air. “May I sit and bother you for a drink? Bars were closed by the time I got here.”
Sterling’s nose wrinkled in response. When it comes to being a private investigator who dug deeper, there’s always people who wants him to stop or be buried six feet under. The last pair of goons sent to dispose of him, they were black, blue, and red along with broken teeth.
With the room suddenly brought into the light, Sterling was forced to bring his free arm up to his eyes, shielding them. The other man would think it was because the lightning suddenly blinded him. It was not. Sterling was not wearing his contact lens to hide his actual eye colors.
“Take a seat.” He said, forced to close his eyes as he gestured the two chairs sitting opposite from his own chair. “I’ll be back right back.” Entering inside the room he was in, he wore a pair of sunglasses to illusion that he was hiding his eye bags and protect his eyes. His gun put away and Sterling returned with two glasses and a bottle. “I only have Scotch at the moment.” He sat across Joshua and poured each of them a glass. “Now answer my questions. How did you find me and how much do you know what I’m doing?”
