“Junko, could you explain something to me?” The incubator sat next to the pink-haired girl. His red eyes turned on her as his tail slowly swished. “You seem to find me cute, but I do not understand this concept of ‘cuteness.’ What is ‘cute’?” Kyubey hoped to possibly harness this 'cute’ trait in future contracts.

“Aww, I’d be more than happy to enlighten you on this subject, Kyubey!”

“Well, for a start, I suppose we should get the basics of it down.  Cuteness is one way of describing a physical attraction towards objects with youthful characteristics.  Say, for instance, a human being looked at a juvenile feline, the feline would be considered ‘cute’ by the human looking at it.”

“Unfortunately, that is the best I can describe it as from what little I know.  You would have to do some more research on your own if you want full details.”

"Ah, I think I understand you." So that was why humans always seemed to comment on his appearance; it was because incubators had designed their forms to look youthful. “I did not know that humans considered cute to be youthful.” While the incubators had “cute” forms, this was not on purpose; rather, they had designed their forms to be visually appealing and nonthreatening. These qualities must also be associated with cute.

As Kyubey thought more about Junko's answer, he raised more questions. "What specific traits would be considered 'cute'?"

The incubator approached the Puella Magi cautiously, his tail swishing low across the ground. He intended to check on her, and gather any grief seeds she had, but he knew this particular Puella Magi was quite powerful. “Marie.”

She barely acknowledged the Incubator, only holding a pair of Grief Seeds between her fingers.

Truthfully, she was used to being lied to and used like this. She had been expecting something like this since the day she made her contract.

One Grief Seed appeared to have come from another girl who had recently contracted, whom Marie had formed an alliance with. She was here alone now, carrying that cluster of despair. 

But she was laughing. It was a cold, sharp, humorless, breathless chuff, barely a cough, but it was clearly a laugh.

“Hell of a sense of humor this world has,” she observed, with bitterness true to her name. “Honestly, I saw this coming. Why else would you come to me when you did?“ There was almost a dramatic flourish in the way she threw her hands up. “I had no future, no hope, no reason to live. In other words, ripe for whatever harvest you’ve got going on.” She laughed again, like there were ashes in her mouth, her steps taking her into an unchained twirl. “I knew that, and I took the deal anyway, because it was either that, or throwing myself off that bridge.“

At last, she reached for the Incubator, grabbing at the scruff of his neck and lifting him so she was able to stare into his dead red eyes. “Considering I’m pretty much a dead woman walking, you could at least humor me and tell me what you actually get out of this.”

The incubator had sat silently as she spoke, unmoving and unresponsive. So, she has found out. Now, her progression in despair would be accelerated; energy would be coming soon. Her reaction wasn't surprising to Kyubey, and he much preferred it to reactions of anger and violence directed at him. While she did seem to be angry, it was not a volatile anger; in that way, it was much more logical.

Upon being lifted into the air, Kyubey stared back into the girl’s eyes. He did not struggle to get free, but instead spoke, still eerily calm.

"Our reason for all of this is quite logical. The universe is slowly decaying due to a steady increase in entropy. We incubators have known of this phenomenon for a while now, and we resolved to find a solution to it. Through study of hundreds of species across the universe, our research has found that humans are the ideal candidates to collect energy from. Your unique and individual sets of emotions coexisting with each other are things that we previously could not fathom. We began contracting humans after this discovery; your shifts in emotion produce massive amounts of energy that can be harnessed to prevent the universe’s heat death.

All of our contracts, then, are for the sake of the universe. Your transformations into witches serve as our metaphorical ‘defense’ against entropy.”

“Hello.” The incubator made himself visible to the girl, walking alongside her. This girl seemed like a potential contractor, so he wanted to become familiar to her. His tail swished back and fourth as he spoke. “What is your name?”

The voice made her jump and stop right in her tracks. Looking around Sakura saw only three people, all of which were to busy doing their own thing that there was no way they could have spoken to her. Her gaze fell to a small, cute creature beside her. That couldn’t have been the source of the voice could it?

“H-hello?” she said, hoping those around were still to busy to see her. “Was that you just now?” She’d talked to and saw weirder things in the past but talking to this white creature was still weird

"Yes, that was me speaking." The incubator was seemingly relaxed as he spoke, his ears swishing from side to side. This girl did seem agreeable enough, and he took note of her glancing around. “Do not worry-no one else can hear us, and they can’t see me.” Kyubey had made himself visible only to Sakura, so that he did not have to deal with outside interference.

Since his second question had not been answered, he looked up at the girl and asked again. "My name is Kyubey. What is your name?"

Kyubey ignored her statements about satisfaction-that was a human emotion, which were by nature illogical. Instead, his focus was on something else the witch had said. “Killing witches is a Puella Magi’s duty, Mariko, and you are no longer a Puella Magi.” Did this witch not hunt humans in a labyrinth?

“I am still a Puella Magi at heart, incubator.  And that’s something you’ll never be able to take away from me!” She grinned at the creature.  “I’ll become a different type of witch than what you want me to be!”

[incubitus]

“How interesting.” The incubator’s eyes bore into the witch. “As a result of your wish, you are neither a full witch nor a full Puella Magi. We incubators have not seen such a being.” As if from nowhere, dozens of incubators appeared around Mariko, all speaking with one voice, one mind.

“In light of this development, we will be observing your progress much more regularly.”

"Long time no see, Kyubey."

“Indeed, Junko. I trust all is well?”

“I suppose you could say that.  Things have been getting rather boring around here though, and I can’t stand the boredom.”

“Honestly, at this point I’d literally try shoving a knife up my crotch just to relieve this insane boredom.”

"That reaction is rather extreme considering your circumstances. To do so seems quite illogical. Why would you consider such an action?”

Despair is like a virus, it emerges in an individual and begins consuming their minds until they're overwhelmed with grief, which can often lead to either suicide or loss of sanity. And it's just as infectious as common bacterial diseases.

“Indeed. Depending on circumstances, despair can be accelerated, dulled, or sometimes stopped. We incubators often let the cycle play out on its own, but realization of the truth about Puella Magi often accelerates the process. However, despair is not necessarily infectious-once again, it depends on the circumstances.

And for Puella Magi, despair leads to energy release, in the form of transforming into witches.”

"Long time no see, Kyubey."

“Indeed, Junko. I trust all is well?”

So something dawned on me while I was working on some character vignettes for Marie. I don't think Kyubey would think the idea of self-termination makes sense at all. It's not something that usually happens with creatures that don't experience despair, and it's in total defiance of what should be a survival drive.

“Yes, that is correct. Self-termination is incredibly illogical. Like the human emotion ‘love’, we incubators simply cannot understand it.”

So out of curiosity, is there anything someone -couldn't- wish for? Like, if someone wished for omnipotence what exactly would happen? ...other than what I can only assume would be the girl turning into a witch upon the first use of their powers.

“Well, the ability to wish for something comes from one’s potential. The more cosmic potential you have, the bigger a wish you can make. For example, a revolutionary who is vital to history might be able to wish for omnipotence, while a normal civilian would not. And yes, someone who wished for omnipotence would turn into a witch soon after, due to the power of their cosmic potential and despair combined with the realizations they gain due to omnipotence.”
