Mentioned how crazy the ending was in my spoiler free review, but let me just say, damn it was cool as hell seeing all that blood rush into the submarine. I can't believe The Convict LOST AN ARM. That was absolutely crazy. The ending may seem abrupt, but tbh thats pretty true to the games. You get jumpscared by a giant fish, the story suddenly ends.

Though the story could be confusing at some points, it was very compelling, as it was in the original. Its lovecraftian in nature--bits are going to go unexplained, which is supposed to add to the terror.

I liked the sequence with the bright light. Could it have been some sort of deity, or simply the light at the end of a giant anglerfishes antenna? Its never explained and thats what makes it freaky.

I do wish the stuff with the convict/Simon's backstory was handled a little differently, but im open to it and once I did understand it I found it interesting and it plays well into Simon's desperation for freedom.

I really love those slow motion shots of Simon seeing the blood burst through the window. Thats what really made me realize Mark has a knack for this. In fact all of the surreal, hallucinatory aspects are where his strengths as a film maker tend to shine. You never know what's causing them either. Lack of oxygen? Being isolated? Being drunk, even? Its that sort of confusion that lays the groundwork for some pretty intense scenes. That i really liked.

It does go on for too long, maybe, couldve been shaved down. I could see this potentially confusing people who havent engaged with the game, or cosmic horror of any kind. I have, but not many do. But tbh, that doesnt stop it from being an overall good movie and a fun viewing experience.

8/10.
