being a black sails fangirl by doing my senior honors thesis for my English lit degree on Treasure Island

just realized how important pirates are to my education and just life lol. so okay here's the chain of how it happened: decided to watch ofmd because i heard it was good and gay --- heard i should watch black sails if i like ofmd (which is sorta crazy because all they have in common is being about gay pirates and THATS IT) --- become obsessed with black sails and loving how the show is just so rich for analysis (about imperialism, about monsters, about anarchy, about storytelling, etc) --- thinks to write an essay in my 2nd year of college about black sails and its the most enjoyable and best essay ive ever written up to that point and my professor says its graduate level work and i finally feel like im doing good with my english degree and its all because black sails is such a good show for analysis --- gains confidence in myself as a writer so i get the idea to apply to do an honors thesis about treasure island --- so i read treasure island since i havent read it yet lol -- apply to do an honors thesis with the black sails essay --- gets in and writes a thesis on treasure island ! and treasure island is actually a super interesting book. robert louis stevenson what was going on in your funky mind ! but anyway yay pirates !!

I dreamed of you but not in the romantic way but in a metatexual since it’s also been used as a reoccurring motif for her intertextual predecessor (and ultimately the one who’s legacy she will transcend) to hint at maybe not narrative but thematic importance and I dreamed of you having a kind of surrealistic feeling about it owing to the fantastical elements of the series, the narrative has literally dreamed of her! But also in the interpersonal aspect and how much this means for both characters yes he has dreamed of her in the literal sense but he has also dreamed of her, the true knight! subconsciously wishing for someone to discredit his overt cynicism for years and for such a shambling and ugly person yet the one true beauty he has ever met being that person so of course she is the one he can straightforward tell I dreamed of you with zero hesitation!! And her!! Being constantly reminded how sorely she sticks out in this society because she cannot conform and being othered and mistreated and yet this man who has been nearly nothing but cruel to her telling her I dreamed of you, because even if the world doesn’t accept her the rules and rigidities blur when dreams are concerned, ie she could almost be a beauty she could almost be a knight, and in the dream her sword is the one that burns against the darkness, she is the only logical successor to this motif and she will not fall short where her ancestors did. But all of this is not to undercut the straightforward romance in this statement. Why did you come back? Jaime only shrugged. I dreamed of you.

I love the fact that this confession and all of its commentary can exist in this fandom without drawing loads and loads of hate.

I value building a coherent world and characters I care about more than writing style. I’d rather read a good story with characters I care about than I do about having a unique writing style or beautifully expressive language. (I also agree that AFFC and particularly ADWD faltered, but I do agree that was probably for lack of good editing and because of the decision to make that split by POV instead of chronologically.) I can forgive an occasional “the sight of their arousal was arousing” because I care more about the characters and having a story and characters that are deep enough to inspire endless debate and interesting meta than I do about the technique.

I give Martin a lot of credit for the foreshadowing, and the intricate construction of plots, and the levels of depth of his characters. But I don’t worship any writer: again, my theme of the day is apparently “Everyone and everything is imperfect, and everything should be open to criticism.” Even my favorite writers are not gods. They are capable of making mistakes, even in books I love.

His books aren’t meant to be read. I think that’s the trick to reading GRRM. You can’t read him like anyone else. It’s a matter of transference and a willingness to sacrifice archetypes for the story….

You find a character that hits you in a certain spot, and for a while, you become enough of a player in his world to care about the rest. This is tribal in a way, and you don’t care about dialogue or imagery or the prose itself because you’re very much a part of a particular world.

And that world requires a blood sacrifice. If you don’t get into it, then you miss something. You’re either in Westeros or you’re not. If you’re not, you notice things like the writing. You miss…something that way. You’ve not bled yet.

I think it’s his writing that inspires that, no matter how bland or tedious some might find it. He’s able to hit some part of our souls that makes us want to rage on someone with a tire iron for daring to say anything against our people. His talent isn’t writing. His talent is getting people to care.
