i used to treat books as sacred and dared to fold the pages or write notes on them – until i grabbed this book from my soc professor’s free bin at his office. reading his notes and the red and blue lines jumping from sentences to sentences, paragraphs to paragraphs, i felt as if i was offered a glimpse of a part of him. this was more than a book, but a part of him, and maybe this is exactly what mauss was talking about when gifts are exchanged between people, that connections shapes the idea of sacredness.
