the reason why the connection exists between james whale's frankenstein and spirit of the beehive is very personal to me. because the movie that james whale did in hollywood with boris karloff produced by universal travels all over the world and arrives to a tiny little dusty city in spain. and is seen by the eyes of a six year old girl. and it transforms her, it makes the world magical. and that depth of connection resumes why i make movies. i am that girl, frankenstein came to my life at that age. when i was a kid it transformed me in the same way.
the way i cast children and actors in general is defined by this movie because the eyes of that girl, ana torrent, are capable of seeing seeing more mysteries than anyone ever in the history of mankind. and when i cast my actors, but especially the kids, the only thing i want is to see if they can see."
