Alfred Pennyworth
A former secret agent for the British Government, Alfred Pennyworth has a colorful and highly decorated past in military intelligence and covert operations. Retiring from the service, Alfred relocated to the United States where he took up a position as a butler at the prestigious Wayne Manor. Here he tended to Thomas and Martha Wayne and their newborn son, Bruce.
When Dr. and Mrs. Wayne were murdered, Alfred became young Bruce’s legal guardian and supported the child along the path that would ultimately result in his becoming Batman. Clever, resourceful and entirely unflappable, Alfred proved an invaluable ally to The Dark Knight, aiding Bruce in his journey toward becoming a great hero and force for justice.
As he had for Bruce, Alfred also cared for Dick Grayson when Bruce brought him on as his ward and eventual superhero sidekick, Robin. And this followed suit with each of the subsequent additions to Batman’s crimefighting family. Before long, Alfred found himself an essential grandfatherly pillar of support and guidance for numerous heroes.
Although he possesses no super powers of his own, Alfred has proven invaluable to safeguarding not only of Gotham City but the entire world. Numerous adventures have seen him double as Batman, become a super powered hero, become unwitting super villain, perish in action, be resurrected, and all manner of wild comic book mayhem. Throughout it all, Alfred has remained steadfast and strident; a pivotal pillar supporting the Caped Crusader and his many allies. He’s just the the best.
A host of different actors have portrayed Alfred in a number of movies and television shows; such actors include William Austin, Eric Wilton, Michael Gough, Michael Caine, Jeremy Irons, Douglas Hodge, Alan Napier, Ian Abercrombie, Jack Bannon, David McCallum, Sean Pertwee and Andy Serkis. Alfred has additionally featured in many animated projects.
