He’s morphing into Hugo with his little grey wisps of hair 🥹
getting child sexual abused at middle age because you’re young at heart
“Let’s take a trip now, to Novelty Island!”
and in re their eye for an eye obsession. i get the brutality of it, its very reasonable as 'most harrowing punishment is recreating what was done to me'. and its more interesting to watch what i think is the most intentional in their work which is a. neurotic spirals of vindication rather than release and b. banal existentialism where in the end u die romantic irony style with no balance or purity reached (both as a form of horror). but seeing that constantly makes it so good when there is some moral completionism. versus. idk i have been. thinking a lot about specifically (steve pemberton voice looking over the shoulder of someone googling your name of course) People (nonspecific) who have experienced SA have this constant extended violent reaction and a lot of their work really strangely maybe not strangely reminds me of that gut instinct of i want you to hurt exactly as much as i did. that seemingly kind of only occurs in That space of violation. and to have and to hold is a good example of this beyond all the other interesting things happening in that ep but, oh naturally obviously his worst punishment could be him being in exactly the same situation as he put that woman through. thats the shock twist moment right, that now he's chained up in the basement just like she was.
however. its not the same is it. he's not being sexually assaulted is he. thats not even implied. it would be misdirected and aimless and strange wouldnt it. there is no way in this situation where the perpetrator can be adequately Evenly violated. because there is gender and power operating here. I mean even the actual act implied has the most intense visual hierarchy and that just can't be recreated inversely. so theres this massive gaping lack within the completion of the loop. but still they have to keep doing this Loop they just have to its so interesting. no one is allowed to be freed from the narrative they have to just keep swapping power and punishing each other forever.
pat pat :)
not to rb my own post AGAIN but people put such good tags on it & i consider it further
feel like. this is the reaction of a dog who has been well trained. like if you’d tried this just a few weeks ago, he would’ve growled, but now he just flinches slightly and smiles like a good boy :}
this is stage/fright actually this is all of in9
its why wise owl is suuch an interesting ep for me, not to complain about their malformed rituals everywhere else. but its the one where the victim isnt actually in the end narratively punished. not to say thats the clear line in every story, its complex, but such an Undercurrent thru the whole series that i love /hate on its spectrum from simple banality of evil -> misogyny tainted attempt at critique etc. (in re the latter :
for example, to have and to hold. hm interesting. and riddle of the sphinx of course. again i dont necessarily dislike it bc its sooooooo fascinating to me how their brains work).
BUT irt the original point. a good simple example is sardines in setting out this consistency that the victim will always also suffer/be punished.
however i am thinking about lip service bc it was suuch an interesting episode for me on first watch. when he reveals himself to be a stalker and his awkward sort of charm is completely reframed to the viewer. and then! i mean very ballasted by steves performance. but when it starts to sort of unravel that shes been doing something similar to him, and u can see him grapple with the discomfort of it, it reveals to him the feeling that hes been putting his ex thru, he feels violated, he becomes the victim. and its very awesome+insular then to take the romantic angle. weirdly sort of endearing, there is this massive and effective! arc happening in a few minutes: he is Good, he is Bad, he is punished/violated for his Badness in perfect eye for an eye, he is redeemed and allowed love.
(and then ofc they have to have the final twist -_- lol whether its just out of knee jerk Twist Extremism or if its out of their punishment obsession idrc, because those two concepts always go hand in hand. crazy this pull to always also have the victim be ultimate punished, either as release (false) or instead of release, this narrative amoralism)
(in a way its an attack/rejection of that arc. which is the little spot i find interesting and often fumbled and yet interesting)
this is stage/fright actually this is all of in9
when two people have been together for so long and so much resentment has built up and they keep killing each other and killing each other and killing each other and killing each other and even if there's still love between them they can't help it they just can't stop killing each other and killing each other and killing each other and killing each other
feeding a crying puppet peppermints that he is spitting out almost immediately after
It’s fascinating how many straight men are like legitimately in love with their male best friend it’s kind of the opposite of being legitimately repressed bisexual and constantly having homoerotic near sexual encounters it’s more like I think they really really really really wish they wanted to fuck each other but they don’t so they have to suffice with putting each other over everyone else in their entire life
i just remembered and thought about reece shearsmith steve pemberton haha lloll
