man, i’m sorry—this breaks my heart. i went to odisha during one of the trips home to india to visit my mom’s family and it is one of the most remarkable and deeply wondrous places that i have ever seen. i wish that was how i could speak about it all the time. it’s a place that eternalizes human creativity and devotion towards the sublime. i wish anybody cared about india as much as it deserves to be cared for, starting with care from our own government.

Finally getting through to legal aid after 1000 years and being told a judge will probably just take my landlords side and kick us out in the next ten minutes regardless of how bad the living circumstances have been is one of the most harrowing outcomes I could’ve possibly thought of
Okay so. The eviction hearing is on the second and the landlord says that he sent an eviction notice the day before the rent got put in escrow that we never got, then the one he pasted on our door, and then the one he sent us the beginning of this month. We finally got assigned a lawyer through legal aid that says that if he says he sent that first eviction notice with or without proof the judge will probably take his side and we should just essentially beg him for another month or two under whatever pretenses he wants. This all sounds like bullshit to me ngl however it’s not like we can afford any other lawyer and also the chance that he actually could kick us out that soon is terrifying like I have no idea what we’d do honestly this entire thing is a nightmare

for context romani people are an ethic group originally from south asia (modern day rajasthan in north india) who migrated to europe over 1000 years ago (around the 11th-13th centuries CE) & have lived there ever since (there is also a worldwide diaspora etc). they have faced a lot of oppression including 500 years (1300s to 1856) of chattel slavery in my home country romania, and were victims of the holocaust (estimates say between 250 000 and 500 000 (meaning between a quarter and half of the pre-war romani population) died in europe overall, while in romania an estimate of 11 000 to 13 000 died out of an estimated 250 000 deported to camps). in modern day romania they face essentially every kind of oppression imaginable - to give just 1 example nearly everybody (& i mean everybody except a handful of activists) refers to them with a slur that has the same origin & is on the same level as the n word. ok now onto my family shit under the cut
i first started thinking abt this a few months ago when i (high) uncovered a lot of childhood memories of my mom (white romanian) telling me that my grandfather on my dad;s side is romani. in every memory that included my dad, he was denying this & arguing w her abt it (my parents are unironically either arguing or about to argue in every memory i have of the 2 of the them)
i asked my mom abt the memories & she said that they did indeed happen, but that she was "only basing this on what my grandfather looked like, not on any real evidence"
i dont have any pictures of my grandpa to include here, but thinking abt it now he did have darker skin than the average white person, & most ppl seeing him probably wld not assume that hes white but assume that hes a light skinned south asian - but again remember that i dont have any pictures to base this on
my boyfriends family is from punjab (right next to rajasthan), & what i can say for sure abt my grandfather;s skin color is that he definitely had darker skin than my bf & his mom (who both usually pass for white before ppl hear their names), & around the same skin tone as my boyfriends dad (who didnt always pass for white even tho he had blue eyes - unlike my grandpa who had dark eyes, so thats y i think he probably wld not pass for white by american standards)
my dad btw looks white (he has pale skin, brown eyes, dark hair (balding) & a full beard) but whenever we were in an airport my mom wld tell him to be careful bc he looks arab which he never disagreed w & honestly im not sure if i wld either, airport security is insane
anyway 1 big reason to suspect racefaking is that my grandmother on my dads side was jewish, which my dad did not reveal until right after she died (tho ofc if id thought abt it i probably cldve written a list of "hints" like this abt her too). my mom (christian & very religious) never knew & still doesnt know abt my grandmas background
after my grandfather died my dad didnt rlly talk abt him (he died while i was abroad & i only came home months later), but when we were in a bookshop together he bought the autobiography of a romani activist & he told me that all the sales from the book go towards education funds for poor roma children & that he buys it every time he sees it (as far as i can tell its out of print now so idt u can contribute to the fundraiser but if u want to buy the book anyway this is a link to get a signed second hand copy)
what makes the book thing weird is that my dad always sounded very racist when talking abt romani people, he thought that they need to leave romania and will never "fit into the culture" there. this he expressed whenever he saw a romani person wearing traditional clothes (usually while he was driving) & he wld yell in anger that all the [slur]s need to leave this country
my mom almost never disagreed w this but i did, & 1 time when i was arguing w him abt this as a teenager i called him a fascist. he was calm before but that made him rlly anrgy, he told me he cld never be a fascist & that i dont even know what our family had been through when the fascists were in power (at the time i hadnt figured out that my grandma was jewish so i did, in fact, not know
as u can tell my dad is not woke by any means but i dont remember him saying smth like that abt other non-white ethnic groups. however i only have 2 memories of him talking abt that: 1) him going on a long speech abt how it makes economic sense that more & more ppl from pakistan & other poorer countries will move into romania as more & more romanians move to richer countries in the west, & 2) this is anecdotal but he was talking abt a college friend who was an african immigrant who went back to his country after college & he was saying he wishes that guy wld come back to romania
actually it probably is worth mentioning, my dad is a very outgoing person w a lot of friends from all kinds of backgrounds but he has no romani friends that i remember even tho there r a lot of romani ppl in our city. like i had romani friends & i was barely allowed to have any friends when i lived in romania (i emigrated at 16 btw i got a scholarship abroad & escaped my abusive family. im pretty awesome right 😎 very good looking too i have long curly hair like shakira
anyway recently i (sober, showering) recovered a childhood memory of my aunt (dad;s sister, married to a romani man) pointing to me at a family gathering & asking my dad "blond hair, blue eyes [same features as my mom], this child looks nothing like you and barely comes to visit us, are you okay with that?" both my grandpa & my grandma intervened to tell her to shut up & i think my mom was weirded tf out by that. my mom has also always hated my dads family especially his sister but shes a rlly shitty person she hated everyone me or my dad got along w
1 time my grandpa was talking abt his childhood, saying his family always experienced a lot of poverty, & added that, unlike him, my grandma didnt experience poverty like that, which she readily agreed w, even tho shed just finished talking abt how hard her life was (my grandparents rlly loved each other & never argued). however its pretty weird that she wld agree w that, my grandmothers life story is that she & her sisters left her familys [jewish] village in bucovina behind when they were children & moved in with people [christians] in a village in the south of the country (400 miles/600 km away). her family had sent them away w money to pay the people they stayed with, but they were never fully accepted in that village, & never heard from any of their relatives again [probably bc they all died in the holocaust]. it was very difficult for them to cope with this - 1 of her sisters killed herself. my grandmother had just finished telling me all of this [except for the stuff in brackets], but she still agreed w my grandfather that she never experienced poverty. sure, its possible that her family had left them a lot of money, but they both grew up in villages & then struggled w moving to the city etc, their lives dont seem that different & if anything my grandmas story wld seem worse. unless maybe my grandfather was saying "poverty" to mean "life as a non-white person in a racist society", which my grandma rlly did never experience
i also remember visiting my grandpa w my dad after my grandmother had died, & 1 of the things my grandpa said right before my dad hurried me out of there was that he wants to tell me more abt his family sometime
my dad also didnt let me talk to my grandfather much before he died (he had dementia & my dad said he didnt want me to see him bc i had transitioned and looked like a man now, but maybe the fact that he wanted to open up to me more cldve been another reason (??))
right after my grandma died & my dad had told me she was jewish, i asked him abt her family, realizing i knew nothing abt them. he said that he doesnt rlly know anything either & instead he went on a long speech abt the family history on my grandfathers side, going back years & years into the past. at the time i was too angry to pay attention to it, convinced that my dad was lying when he said he didnt know anything abt my grandmas family (now i rlly wish i had listened, & also think its very likely he was telling the truth - my grandma was very young when she left them & she never heard from them again after). but 1 thing i do remember from that rant is that 1 of my grandpa;s relatives went to bucharest as a street beggar & made enough money to open a store & "establish our family in the capital" - my dad sounded very proud of that. he also may have lived with that side of the family when he went to bucharest for college but im not 100% sure i remember that right listen i was very angry my grandma had just died
also 1 time (long before i knew we were jewish), my dad was telling me abt 1 of his friends, a rlly rich jewish guy. he was saying that a lot of jews were very rich, and added that when the legionnaires (romanian fascists) wanted to get attention before they got into power, they used to kill romani people by throwing them out of moving trains, and that nobody had any problem with that until they started doing it to rich jews. he was very angry when he said that
even w/o my dad having a romani background, his anger at rich jewish ppl was probably personal. when he was in college, he dated this woman from a rlly rich jewish family, and her family always hated him. the reason he always gave for that is that he didnt have any family in bucharest, even tho, as i realized recently, this doesnt make sense: he did have family in bucharest - his fathers family that he told me abt when my grandma died. but if his family (& potentially the family he was living w) were romani, that wld more easily explain why that womans parents hated him so much (most white romanians rlly hate romani ppl & only 20% of the population wld want to marry/accept someone in their family marrying a romani person
1 last thing, when my dad was in college in bucharest he got brutally beaten by miners and potentially cops during the mineriad (wikipedia link - this was a violent counter-protest during which the romanian government brought poor miners into the capital to beat up student protesters alongside the cops). my dad says that he was not a protester or even anywhere near the protest, but that he got beaten up anyway just for being a student. this is ofcourse possible but i was thinking it cld have also potentially been a hate crime - hate crimes & police brutality against romani ppl r very common & this wld also potentially line up w the timeline of my father starting to hide that he was jewish & maybe also that he was romani when he went back to our city after college (???)
