Random starter for @iiinterstellarmusepark​ (for Tamatoa) Well, this could only lead to bad things. Sophie’s Omniwatch had busted itself (again) and she had no idea where it was taking her. This was...well, certainly not the best situation to be in, for sure. As the octoling was tumbling through the air, she thought about how this was going to go. She would probably land herself in a whole buttload of danger. Again.  She really needed to fix that watch one of these days. Just as Sophie was thinking she was going to crash and burn, her descent was suddenly halted by...a big pile of gold? What? The octoling sat up, holding her head and looking around. Yep...she was sitting on top of a huge pile of gold, all right. While she was thankful for the safe landing, Sophie was still very much on guard. All this gold had to belong to someone, and she imagined they wouldn't be too happy to see her on their property. She looked down at her Omniwatch, ready to take off right now, but...wait...where was the watch?! Sophie looked around for a while until she looked up, and...

“Oooooh hell.” Sophie cursed under her breath as she looked up. Why was she so annoyed? Well, the luminescent watch was somehow hanging from a rock near the ceiling. It would take all day to get it down from there! The octoling was so caught up her annoyance, she didn’t notice the ground below her trembling and rumbling.

"Sophia. Did you know that you're not the only native of Inkopolos Square who can travel between Dimensions?"

“Yeah, I know that. It’s just...I’ve had encounters with less-than-friendly characters from Inkopolis, so I try to keep my distance if I see one outside of my own dimension.”

"Tropy, I have something really important I need to tell you. We've been really great friends for a while now, and slowly, as our friendship grew, so did my feelings for you. And everything about you just made it worse. You're handsome, funny, intelligent, great to be around, tell the best puns, and are great emotional support. When I'm around you this vast multiverse feels infinitely less lonely. What I'm trying to say is..." Sophie too a deep breath. Now or never. "....I love you, N. Tropy."

Tropy had completely tensed up as soon as she started speaking, but he was looking at her, clearly paying attention to what she was saying. However, he had his hands on his staff, and as she spoke, his grip on it kept tightening. He looked like a deer in the headlights, not knowing how to react properly to this. At her confession, he looked away slightly. Oh, he wanted to just disappear, to go off to some other time and place where he didn’t have to deal with this- he had no idea how to deal with this.

But at the same time…it was very sincere. And she was his friend. He couldn’t just leave her at a time like this. Yes, it was definitely awkward for him, but it was probably as awkward for her. But what was he supposed to even say?

“…Thank you…?”

That…probably wasn’t it. It’d probably be better if he was just honest with her.

“I- I’m sorry, I really am, I…really don’t know what to do…I don’t know what to even say right now…”

His voice showed how nervous and just…awkward he was feeling, with its slight wavers and tone.

Sophie shut her eyes tightly and looked away as she waited for a response, her heart pounding, ready for the worst. He’s going to say he doesn’t feel the same, she was sure of it. But then…

“’Thank you…?’ I….” That wasn’t the answer she was expecting at all. But after a second, she realized what kind of situtation he was in. N. Tropy was someone who had zero experience with this kind of thing. Unlike her, who actually had dated a few people in the past.

“Ah….I see. Well, if you don’t feel the same, you can tell me. I won’t hate you, or even be mad at all. We can keep just being friends and pretend this never happened, if you want. But, if you’re not sure of how you feel, you don’t have to answer right away. You can take all the ‘time’ you need to get your feelings sorted, eheh…” Sophie attempted to make a time pun to lighten the mood a little, but it probably didn’t do much. 

“I’ll be content with any answer you give, even if you decide to not give one at all. I love you, and I want you to be happy and comfortable, even if that means I can’t be with you romantically.”

The doctor closed one of his eyes and leaned back a little, as if he thought he was going to get yelled at for his answer of ‘thank you,’ but he managed to look at her again with both eyes opened when she continued speaking, standing up straight again. He…probably should have known that she wasn’t going to yell at him over such a stupid answer, but at the same time, he wasn’t sure how she would take that answer, especially since it was such an awful answer to a love confession.

But he was relieved to hear what she was saying, giving her a nod. “Good, I’m glad that you’re being rational about this…that you won’t just…stop being my friend if I don’t feel the same. But…I don’t…know the answer. I don’t know how I feel about this- how I feel about you. I don’t want to say I don’t feel the same way, but at the same time, I’m not sure if I can say that I do feel the same way. I do think I’m going to need some time to think about that one. I’ve never really…felt love, as far as I can remember. I don’t know how I feel…”

The Octarian nodded in understanding as he spoke, giving him a reassuring smile when he was done. "That's completely understandable, this must all be very confusing for you..." If she was honest, Sophie was almost relieved that he wasn't saying no, even if it wasn't a yes. At the very least it let her have some time to think about her own complicated feelings as well.

Sophie then typed a few things on her OmniWatch, which made a portal open behind her. "I'll give you some time alone to think about it, alright? Maybe you can talk to someone with a little more experience who's....slightly less biased than me on the matter, eheh. And when you reach an answer, I'll be happy with whatever conclusion you reach!" Sophie gave him one last smile before stepping through the portal.

"Little announcement:

OmniWatch is broken, kinda stuck where I am right now. I'll still be able to answer questions and all that, buuuut it'll just be my voice through my lab speaker until I can get my watch fixed."

Might as well tell him! If he gets really awkward, it probably won't be for too long- I'm very sure he'd want to be your friend either way, even if he does act awkward for a while

“Yeah, you’re right! If our friendship is as strong as I think it is, he’ll get over it eventually. And if he feels the same way, then awesome, we’ll figure out where to go from there together! But either way I can’t keep these feelings to myself.”

Sophie set off towards N. Tropy before her temporary confidence wore off.

“Wish me luck!”

Why bury those feelings when you could continue feeling them? Actually, why not tell him? I doubt he'd want to stop being your friend just because you told him you liked him as more than a friend- the worst that'll happen is he'll get really awkward about things for a bit

“But….what if it gets so awkward he doesn’t want to speak to me anymore? I’m sure he just wants to continue being friends….why sully things for him by putting him in a an awkward situation like that?” 

“…Ugh this is all so confusing. I’ve never been one to beat around the bush before, so why am I so nervous when it comes to Tropy!? Maybe I should just rip the bandaid off and tell him. Just get it over with…” The octoling weighed her options. If she told him, then they might date! Or things might get really awkward. But if she didn’t tell him, the feelings might only get worse! But he might be happier not knowing. 

“What to do, what to do….?”

“I have no idea what that anon is talking about. There’s no way I could have feelings for Tropy. He’s just my best friend...”

“....I mean, sure, I’ll admit, he’s my intelligent, hilarious....and handsome....and amazing best friend....who makes my heart pound every time he smiles at me....” The realization of what she was saying hit the octoling like a ton of bricks. “Oh no....what if I....do have feelings for him?”

Sophie shook her head in an attempt to clear it. “W-well....even if that’s the case, i-it’s pretty clear that he doesn’t want anything like that...I probably should just....bury these feelings. They won’t do me any good if he doesn’t feel the same....” Honestly, she was almost as nervous as he was about all of this.

"Hey, Tropy, what that HECk was that back there?! You just threw like ten items at me and got a whole lap ahead of me!" Sophie looked about ready to slap her best friend.

“Ehehehee, you snooze you lose, slowpoke! You think I’ll take it easy on you just because we’re friends? Racing is serious business, you know! I can’t help that I’m so amazing! Oh, but I suppose I should apologize, shouldn’t I? I’m sorry…that you decided to take on somebody you could never hope to win against!” He laughed again. Tropy, no.

Sophie let go, her crying having completely stopped now, though her eyes were still a little red.

“I understand, you can just get a little competitive. You’re completely forgiven. If you insult me like that again in the future, now I’ll know that that’s not really what you think. But try to tone it down if ya can...just a little. You might anger someone who doesn’t understand and they might try to clean your clock, hehehe...” The octoling giggled at her own clock pun.

“And hey, I’ve already beaten five of your time trials. Don’t get too cocky, or next thing ya know I might be beating Oxide’s times, haha!” Looks like Sophie was back to her sassy, punny self.

As Tropy spoke, Sophie’s crying started slowing down, until it was eventually reduced to just sniffling. She wiped her eyes, looking up at her friend. She listened to him speak, every word helping her feel better.

“Y-you....really mean that?” She sniffled one last time, and attempted a smile. “If you r-really are sorry, then....I forgive you.” Sophie wrapped her arms around Tropy’s neck, pulling him in for a hug. “I-I’m sorry I got so emotional. Normally I wouldn’t be affected by insults, but hearing all that trash talk come from you....you’re one of the few people I actually care about in the multiverse, and I really don’t want to dissapoint you. So hearing you say I was a loser really hurt...”

“….What happened to the whole ‘ You’re skilled, you’ll beat me eventually’ talk? I thought racing was about having fun with friends, not how many laps ahead of them you can get.” 

Sophie was acting angry, but mostly she was just upset. Maaayybe a little on the verge of crying from how rudely Tropy responded and how much she had lost before.

“No, no, no no no, my dear, you thought wrong! Racing is about…winning…eheehee, yes, winning…how fast you can go, how far away you can get away from the losers…it’s all about winning! If you can’t win, you’re just another loser, and that’s not what I am! I can’t lose, I just can’t! You should know that by now! It’s not your fault you can’t beat me, and it’s not my fault I can never be beaten!”

Tropy had absolutely lost himself in the excitement of the races, he didn’t even fully realize what he was saying to his best friend. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been saying any of it.

“But....b-but I thought.....I was i-improving....” Uh oh, looks like Tropy was shattering Sophie’s hopes of ever beating his time trials. She let out a little sad sniffle, then another.

“I t-thought I could l-learn about r-racing from you.....b-but I g-guess you wouldn’t want to race with a l-loser like me!” And now the sniffles were becoming full-on tears. Good job Tropy.

Sophie listened closely to the Elementals as they spoke, her hand on her chin. If they were as powerful as they claimed to be, then the octoling would have to be very careful with her words if she wanted to get on their good side. And she did want to get on their good side.

“So from what I’ve gathered, given you’re called the Elementals, and how you look....you guys control the elements, aka Earth, Water, Wind, and Fire. Very impressive! I’ve seen similar control over the elements in other dimensions, but every time it always intrigues me. And if you guys are ‘The strongest beings on the planet’ as you claim to be, then I’m in awe of your power.” 

Sophie did a little bow as a sign of respect. Normally she would be very sassy, like she was to Cortex, and she considered that for a moment. But....right now she needed them all to like her.

“But anyway, there’s actually a reason I’ve come to see you. Well, specifically Uka Uka, but having you guys here too is actually better for what I have to say.”
