SUMMARY:Ā Juliette hasnāt touched anyone in exactly 264 days.
The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Julietteās touch is fatal. As long as she doesnāt hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds donāt fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.
The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war ā and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe sheās exactly what they need right now.
Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.
OVERVIEW:Ā I really liked this book. Iāve been in a bit of a reading slump, and this book really helped bring me out of it. I basically started this because of all the warnette edits Iāve been seeing floating around and my friendsā high opinions of the book, so I was expecting a good read and I wasnāt disappointed. The language is sometimes a little too flowery for my liking, but the concept is really intriguing and I really liked Juliette, the main character.
WHAT I LIKED:Ā Juliette, as a character was really intriguing to me. She canāt touch anyone, has been shunned and treated horribly her entire life, has been locked away from the world because sheās a danger, and yet still manages not to be completely cynical, still manages to keep her regard for human life, despite the fact that most of them would rather her be gone than be around and a threat to them. In addition, I love Kenji. Heās hands down my favourite character in this book. Snarky & sarcastic, and not to mention handsome, I love the way he teases Adam and also didnāt hate Juliette once sheād touched him. Kenji felt like a breath of fresh air in this book, he stood out so much because heās a break from all the intensity.
WHAT I DIDNāT LIKE:Ā I liked Adam to begin with, but after he turned out to be one of the soldiers my opinion of him just went down. Not because he was one of Warnerās soldiers, mind you, but because from that point on it seemed more and more like he was too good to be true. The boy who Juliette knew as a child, who she was in love with, just so happenedĀ to be the only person who could touch her? I was half expecting him to betray her at every turn, because he genuinely felt too good to be true. In addition, while I liked the use of flowery language, sometimes it got a bit too much. There wereĀ a lotĀ of metaphors, and I understand that itās supposed to be Julietteās point of view, but it still felt a bit too much.
CONCLUSION:Ā I gave this book a 4/5 star rating because, while there were some things I didnāt like, they didnāt hinder my enjoyment of the book too much. I would definitely recommend this book, and I cannot wait to read the rest of the series!
