Romeo Alberto Perdomo, Iowa inmate 6093564, born 2005, incarceration intake 02/24/2023 at age 17, sentenced to life with possibility of parole
Murder
A teenager pleaded guilty in 2023 in the drive-by shooting death of another teen outside a Des Moines, Iowa, high school and was sentenced to a life prison term with the possibility of parole.
Romeo Perdomo, 17, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the March 7, 2022, death of Jose Lopez-Perez, 15, outside East High School. That plea followed a deal in which prosecutors dismissed other charges and recommended a life sentence with a possibility of parole. Adults convicted of first-degree murder in Iowa are required to spend the rest of their lives in prison but judges can give juveniles a chance at parole.
Judge Lawrence McLellan gave Perdomo the life sentence with no requirement on the time he must serve in prison, telling him, “I hope you use this opportunity to fully understand the consequences you have created, the pain you have created, the grief you have created.”
Perdomo was among 10 teens charged in the death of Lopez-Perez and the wounding of two girls. According to court filings, at least eight of those charged plan to plead guilty and one has been sentenced.
Police investigators blamed the shooting on a dispute between rival gang members, and video evidence showed teens getting into three vehicles and driving by the school, where they sprayed at least 42 bullets from six guns.

Cody Augustine, Utah inmate, born 1988, incarceration intake at age 23, sentenced 3 years to life, since discharged
Attempted Murder
By all accounts, Cody Augustine is polite and respectful. But it wasn’t enough to keep him out of prison.
“It’s hard for me to conceive of anything like this,” 3rd District Judge Judith Atherton said before sentencing the man to three years to life in prison for a 2008 attack involving a knife and a battle-ax.
She also ordered Augustine, 23, to pay full restitution. He was given credit for his time spent in jail, which Augustine’s attorney said amounts to 997 days.
Augustine was charged with attempted murder, a first-degree felony, after he and a friend, Scott Stapley, 24, attacked a man who Augustine believed had given his girlfriend a sexually transmitted disease.
At his trial, Augustine talked about how “distraught” he was when he began to think he had contracted an STD. He and Stapley, armed with a knife and a medieval battle-ax, then went to beat the man.
The judge called the victim in the case, then-17-year-old Justin Ennis, a “complete victim” as he was “lured out of his home” by Augustine’s girlfriend. She said that while she agreed with Augustine’s attorney that the man was “respectful and courteous,” she said she could not ignore the facts of the case.
Augustine apologized in court to the victim and to everyone else involved and told the judge he would do everything she asked.
“I know what you decide will be just and fair,” he said.
Ennis was not at the sentencing hearing.
Augustine’s attorney, Randy Richards, argued for more jail time to be followed by probation. He told the judge that Augustine was the most polite, respectful client that he has ever had in 28 years of practicing law.
“He’s always accepted responsibility and always had remorse,” Richards said after the hearing.
At his trial, Augustine said it was never his intent to kill Ennis, thinking that they would simply exchange words and maybe throw a few punches. He said he had no idea that Stapley exited the vehicle just behind him when they got to Ennis’ home, much less that his friend was yielding a battle-ax.
He testified that he and Ennis engaged in a brief physical fight before Ennis broke free.
He said he then saw Ennis and Stapley in a struggle and acknowledged that he chased Ennis down, but said he only had a knife on him because of some work he did unpacking boxes at his job. He said he didn’t know why he stabbed Ennis multiple times.
Stapley was sentenced to three years to life in prison after a jury found him guilty of attempted murder. He was called as a witness in Augustine’s trial but refused to testify. Atherton ordered that he and Augustine both contribute to pay restitution.

Levi Goss, Texas inmate 02387944, born 1993, incarceration intake at age 28, parole eligible 09/14/2037, scheduled for full release 03/15/2057
Kidnapping, Sexual Assault
It’s a sexual assault investigators with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office say they never let go cold, and now, five years later, a soldier stationed at Ft. Bragg in North Carolina has been charged.
Levi Austin Goss, was charged and convicted with aggravated kidnapping and aggravated sexual assault of a child from a 2013 incident. Authorities say Goss kidnapped a 16-year-old who was walking along the side of a road, hit her in the head with the blunt side of a hatchet, dragged her into a wooded area, raped her then beat her again, leaving her to die.
The victim survived by pretending she was dead, then after the suspect left, she walked to a nearby movie theater for help, according to investigators. Although she was naked, witnesses said she was covered in so much blood, they thought she was initially wearing a red dress.
As Private First Class in the U.S. Army, Goss enlisted in 2016 and served as a parachute rigger with the 82nd Airborne Division. He spent most of his life under the radar of authorities, until the summer of 2017 when he was pulled over for a DUI in North Carolina and also connected to another sexual assault.
Harris County investigators say Goss became a suspect in a 2017 sexual assault in North Carolina, which triggered his DNA being uploaded into a national database. In December 2017, his DNA matched DNA collected in the 2013 Harris Country rape.
The Department of Defense to issue Goss with a Dishonorable Discharge.
(Editor Note: In the final photo, that IS a Bible in his hand.)

Tanner Dashner, Florida inmate W81459, born 1997, incarceration intake in 2022 at age 24, sentenced to 72.5 years, with release date 03/19/2077
Vehicular DUI Manslaughter – 5 counts
Involved in a motor vehicle accident on 12/13/2018 that resulted in a death of 5 individuals driving at 97 MPH in a 30 MPH zone with a blood alcohol content of 0.274 percent resulting in a fiery crash, more than triple the legal limit of 0.08 percent. Indicted, arrested and taken into local custody on 12/18/2018, he spent more than 3 and half years in the local jail (identified as St Lucie County inmate 252459) as legal proceedings progressed. Sentenced to 14.5 years incarceration for each of the 5 victims.
Formally pleaded to a nolo contendere or no contest provision.
At sentencing, Senior Circuit Judge Robert Makemson said he typically doesn’t give an explanation for sentences, but noted this was an “exceptional case.”
“This case is about decisions or choices that were made that night, and the consequences of those decisions,” Makemson said. “One of the consequences is that we lost five lives. And then one person’s life was forever changed.”
