Maker Beyond the Gate

There is a growing number of people who want to create something meaningful. They want to write a book, start a small business, make art, invent something, teach, build a community, grow food, create a product, make music—do work that feels connected to who they actually are. But the modern economy increasingly asks a brutal question: How much money do you have to spend before we will allow anyone to see you? 

You pay for the website. You pay for the software. You pay for the materials, the inventory, the shipping, the photography, the advertising, the subscriptions, the tools that help you create, and the tools that help you market. And then, after paying for all of that, you still have no guarantee that anyone will find you. You are not necessarily paying to succeed. You are paying for the privilege of entering the arena. 

And even if you make something wonderful, you are competing against people and corporations with vastly greater resources. They can buy the billboard. They can buy the celebrity. They can buy the advertisement. They can buy the influencer. They can buy the attention. And eventually, the public begins to confuse visibility with value. We see something everywhere, so we assume it must be good. We see millions of followers, so we assume the person must have something important to say. We see a product promoted everywhere, so we assume it must be better than the product made by the person we have never heard of. But being seen is not the same as being valuable.
